InDesign AI Assistant just launched in public beta and we are excited for you to try it. What is AI Assistant in InDesign?It's your conversational partner built directly within InDesign. It can help you build skills and create production-ready InDesign documents faster. Instead of digging through tutorials, simply ask the AI Assistant "How do I create a table of contents?" and learn as you go. Or save time by having it set up your layout and apply bulk text/image/style edits with a single prompt.Why it mattersDesigners spend a huge amount of time on repetitive tasks and navigating menus, and when you get stuck, context-switching to YouTube or Help pages breaks your flow. AI Assistant changes that: Speed up your workflow: Automate multi-step workflows with natural language prompts. Guidance on demand: Get instant, in-context answers without leaving the app. Stay in your creative flow: Fewer interruptions, more designing. How to Save an InDesign File for Older Versions (IDML) Did you know? InDesign files aren't backward compatible by default - a .indd file saved in InDesign 2024 simply won't open in InDesign CC 2019. But there's a simple workaround: export as IDML. What is IDML?IDML (InDesign Markup Language) is an open, XML-based file format that acts as a universal bridge between InDesign versions. Any version of InDesign from CS4 onwards can open an IDML file - making it the go-to format when collaborating with colleagues or clients on older software.But backward compatibility is only half the story. IDML is also one of the most reliable ways to recover a corrupted InDesign file. Because IDML is XML-based rather than binary, exporting a damaged .indd to IDML and then reopening it often strips out the corruption that's causing crashes, freezes, or "cannot be opened" errors - even when other recovery methods fail. Many InDesign users keep this trick in their back pocket specifically for emergencies, no
Hi, why is my workspace when opening a indesing file always going back to 'Essenstial' setting?This is an issue I have for a year now.Very annoying.thnaks BAS <Titile renamed by MOD>
I have a catalogue that already includes quite a lot of sections (based on specific product groups) as such, I don’t want to force numbering by starting a new section, as this will affect my automatic numbering setup and mix up the sections for each product group already added. However, I want to add adverts in between certain pages on my catalogue without this affecting the page numbers of the rest of my pages. for exampe, page 1, page 2, Advert, Page 3. We are constantly adding pages and need the automatic numbering function, and referencing the page number off a separate list is also not an option. I see so many people with this exact same issue. Surely Adobe can add a “Exclude page from numbering” check box?
I have currently selected multiple images, and I want to use a script to generate captions. After generating static captions, automatically select the captions as the operating objects.In the future, I will make other adjustments to the captions.
I created a numbered list Paragraph titled: Numbered List 1, the mode Start At 1. To be able to have this list continue numbering from 1 I duplicated the list, edited the Style Name: to Numbered List 1 Cont. and under Mode: I set it to: Continue from Previous. For some reason the next numbered list continues at 4, not 2. What could be causing this to happen? I have never had this issue with numbering before. Any help would be appreciated. Todd
When I set narrow bullet indents, the second line always goes wonky and pushed far out. When I set it to higher values, they align nicely.Font is Georgia 6pts, with 7.2pt leading. When I choose any larger font size than 6, it also works. I have:No paragraph styles activated No cell styles activated No tab styles activatedI’d appreciate any advice on how to fix this. Thanks for your time.__________________________________ *I realized first line indent is not what I want either, so as you can see below, even with small tab position, the 2nd line gets pushed out:
I have selected an image that is embedded in a text box.I want to obtain the Y value of the anchor point and the X value of the left column line of the anchor point.
Hi everyone.I have selected all the content of the article and want to control the embedded images, so I need to obtain the text box where the images are located.Surprisingly, The parent of the character is “Story”, not “TextFrame”.And parentTextFrames [0] may not necessarily be the text box where the image is located, It refers to the first text box that appears to be the story.How can I get the current textFrame for 'story. allGraphics [i]'?Thank you.var d = app.documents[0];var item = d.selection[0]var story = item.parent;if (story.allGraphics.length > 0) { for (var i = 0; i < story.allGraphics.length; i++) { var curFrame = story.allGraphics[i].parent.parent.parentTextFrames[0]; alert(curFrame.constructor.name); }}
I've used InDesign for at least 15 years and until a few years ago it was great. But over the past few years it has gotten worse and worse in regard to crashing and just doing odd things. This has been my experience, first when I got a top of the line 2020 iMac with an M1 chip, and now with a brand new Mac Studio with an M2 Max chip, 64GB memory and Apple Studio monitor. The main issue is that it crashes on an almost daily basis. Fortunately I haven't lost a file yet, but it's still annoying. I've been on the phone with Adobe tech support a number of times, but despite removing the preferences, updating the OS and app version, etc, etc, any improvement lasts maybe a week. It also does weird things like defaults to a different workspace arrangement everytime I leave InDesign to momentarily work in another program. I've reset my preferred workspace (no docs open) numerous times. Occasionally things like text color or edits don't view properly. I have to toggle
I’ve been experimenting with the Beta version, and just found that I can’t copy a Column Break symbol from the release version and paste into the Beta version. I don’t know if other break symbols (or other symbols/markers) are affected.Also, I had to enable what’s shown below to allow styles to remain present from the release version into the Beta: Any thoughts?thanks

I'm experiencing what appears to be a bug in InDesign for Windows (InDesign 21.4.1).After updating to InDesign 21.x, I can no longer drag selected text to another position.Here's what I've confirmed: Object frames can be dragged normally. Only text drag-and-drop is affected. This happens in multiple documents, including newly created ones. Resetting Preferences did not fix the issue. The most interesting part is that, on Master Pages, drag-and-drop works on the right-hand page, but does not work on the left-hand page. Another Japanese user reported exactly the same issue on the Adobe Community forum several months ago, and the discussion remains unresolved. Is this a known bug? Can anyone reproduce this issue on Windows?The issue started after updating to InDesign 21.x. After downgrading to InDesign 19.x, text drag-and-drop works normally again.I also contacted Adobe Support by phone, but the issue could not be resolved. *Here's the Japanese thread describing the same issue.
I've been exploring Adobe InDesign recently and was wondering what's the one feature or shortcut you use all the time? Is there an InDesign tip that completely changed the way you design layouts? Share your favourite tricks for beginners and professionals alike!
HiEach time I import an image into Indesign, the image loads okay, but I get the blue swirling ‘loading’ icon that never stops. I can save my document, and the menus still work but I can’t work on the actual page, and the only way I can clear it it to Force quit Indesign using Task Manager. This started about 2 weeks ago, and was fine before and I haven’t made any changes to my PC. I thought maybe it started after an update of Indesign, so I tried reverting to an older version, but still had the same problem.I have tried re-installing Indesign. (version21.3) I use Windows 11.I really hope you can help please?Thanks Chris
The latest version on InDesign was not working on our Windows 11 systems: it either wouldn’t launch or when using it, text will disappear in text boxes (even though it is still there) and the Undo action only performs one or two undos. Uninstalled and went back to InDesign version 20.5.1 which appeared to work fine until today: now I am having the same undo problem. Tested in a brand new document.It should be noted that coworkers with Macs are not having this issue.I saw a previous post that said this could be fixed by unchecking the GPU option in preferences, but that is NOT checked in mine (it is greyed out because it says it does not detect a compatible device).It is almost impossible to work knowing you only have one undo, please advise how to fix this!
Hi I am fairly new to InDesign and am trying to create a Table of Contents. I have created a Paragraph Style with Large text, in bold, callled 'Table of Contents Heading'. If I create some text using this paragraph style it shows exactly as I want. However, when I try to create a Table of Contents, and instruct InDesign to use this for the Title Style, it just shows a basic White Text. I have attached a couple of marked up screenshots showing the Table of Contents with the wrong Title Style and odd objects, and also a screen shot of the TOC Settings. The Green shows the Parapgraph Style in a normal Text Box, all Good.The Red shows the TOC Title which should look the same as the text circled in Green.The Orange shows items I have no idea where they have come from. Nothing I try makes any difference. If I double click into the Table of Contents and select the text, it states that it is in the Style I want, but the Font size and all other attributes are
Hi all - As noted, 100% black in ID turns into 91% in a PDF.This appears to be similar to this post - however, I haven’t found something that works, and am not sure what’s going on.Have there been any updates to the process here? Any troubleshooting tips?Maybe export to a different profile?[edit] Gray Gamma 2.2 seems to be ok - not sure why 100% black would be changing in other export profiles though… ?FWIW - we’re printing in black only. There’s an RGB image with an almost-black that’s converting properly. (I didn’t receive a profile...)thanks!
Hello,I’m working on setting up a document where I have 8” x 9” pages forming a 16” x 9” spread. I’m trying to set up a 5 column grid on my master spread that jumps the gutter, but I can only find ways to set the number of columns per PAGE, and not to set the margins for the spread. In essence, I need a 16” x 9” page with a 5 column grid, but I need to set it up using two 8” x 9” pages so it can be printed as a spread. I functionally need 2.5 columns per page to create the grid structure I am looking for, but InDesign doesn’t support fractional columns, either.Can anyone tell me if there is a clean way to achieve this?Thanks!
