Lightroom: How do I transfer my catalog and photos to external hard drive w/o losing ratings or develop settings for individual photos?

Hello,

I just transferred my Lightroom catalog and images from an old external drive to a new external drive. The correct catalog is found when opening Lightroom but not the images. Is there an easy way to have the images show in Lightroom? I know I am missing a step but not sure where to start.

Thanks, Marc

Apparently the new external hard drive doesn't have the same name or drive letter as the previous one. In the library module, right-click on the topmost folder in the left hand column and choose the option to find missing folder or update folder location. In the dialog that displays just browse to the new external hard drive and choose that same folder. That should synchronize everything underneath that folder. If you have a lot of other folders that are not within that same folder structure it will be necessary to repeat the process for each of those folders.

Follow these instructions: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/lightroom-photos-missing-fix/

You probably forgot to move the 'catalogname previews.lrdata' as well, and so you don't see any thumbnails.

Hi Marc,

As you've mentioned that you're using a Lightroom catalog and would like to migrate it to external drive along with the edits and develop settings for each image. I assume that you're working with Lightroom Classic CC. Is that correct?

I'd suggest that you export your Lightroom catalog from the File>> Export as a catalog. Refer Export a catalog | for more info.

Let us know if that helps.

Thanks,

Akash

Moving to Lightroom CC — The cloud-based photo service

This is clearly a Lightroom Classic question, not a Lightroom CC question (Lightroom CC doesn't have a catalog and the Lightroom CC library cannot be stored on an external drive), so I'm not sure why this was moved to this forum.
