Enhance Speech crashes on some Macs with Intel chips / AMD GPUs

The below is a fix that is working for some users.

Update: 
To fix the issue described below, upgrade your Mac’s OS to the latest version: Sequoia (15.0).
Go to Settings -> General -> Software Update
More information about Sequoia available here.

This issue effected some users with Mac Intel computers using AMD Radeon GPUs. The bug involved a crash when using Enhance Speech, particularly with longer audio clips. We do not see evidence that this was effecting other configurations.

We are continuing to work on a fix for remaining users still experiencing this issue. Thank you for your patience.

When i try to use the Enhance Speech button in the Essential Sound panel, my iMac crashes every time.

1. First i select the voice over audio clip

2. then i go to Essential Sound

3. i choose Dialogue and

4. Enhance.

Pr is analysing and then nothing happens and everyting is stuck. I cannot go to another programm or screen. I have to reboot my iMac. 

I use iMac, 27 inch 2020: with 3,6 GHz 10-Core Intel Core i9 and 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

sorry to hear that you still run into issues when using Enhance Speech.

Can you please confirm that you still encounter a Kernel Panic?

This is a fully system crash (not just a Premiere application crash) causing your computer to restart.

If this is still the case, the best way to get it actionable on our side is if you could provide us with the resulting Kernel Panic logs.

Here is a rundown on how to access the logs:

Saving the panic log

A minute or so after a spontaneous restart (or, in some older Macs, after starting up when they had spontaneously shut down) a Panic Alert is displayed, inviting the user to agree to sending the panic log to Apple. Don’t simply send the report to Apple, though, as it’s the only readily accessible record of what happened. Panic logs used to be saved in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports, from where you could open them in Console, but more recently may be found somewhere closer to /var/db/PanicReporter. They’re thus best copied as soon as they appear and before sending them to Apple.

If the alert isn’t already showing the panic log, click on its Report… button, then open a text editor like TextEdit. Copy the whole contents of the panic log into an empty text window and save it somewhere safe before clicking on the button to send the report to Apple. Once you’ve done that, the alert is dismissed and can’t be brought back.

Once you have saved the report to disk, it would be great it could be shared with us.

I have a Dell PC with an Nvidia RTX A3000 and a Puget Systems desktop with a Threadripper processor and a high end Nvidia card. Enhance Speech STILL causes crashes on both of these machines. Like, as of today it is still crashing them. AGAIN, THIS IS NOT MAC RELATED! This is another situation in which Adobe is chasing nothing burgers down false rabbit holes. The problems with Enhance Speech, and many other Premiere related issues, are larger than one simple system configuration.

We've continued to work on this issue w/ Intel Macs using AMD GPUs over the past few months, coordinating with our partners, and using the information in this forum to help diagnose what's going on. Thank you for continuing to provide the updates and the detailed information.

Please download the next version of PrPro when it comes out, 25.1, in early December (Dec 4 for most users -- we have staggared rollouts of new versions). We've included a new fix in that version that has addressed the crash issue on machines with this configuration in our internal tests.

I would have had to done this right after the crash, right? It's a bit too late now, and I'm not going to purposely make my computer crash. I saw someone else's comment that their hard drive failed after one of their crashes from this. No thanks! I suggest Adobe figure out how to replicate it on their end.

MunchyBugs, it is unrealistic to expect Adobe to test every possible hardware and software configuration out there especially with pc's where the variety of configurations is infinite...  Back in the day, Avid mediacomposer was a turnkey system in which every piece of the hardware and software including the cables were provided...  and guess what, updates often caused problems on some systems...    Also, since your system is windows based, might be a good idea to start a new thread as the subject of this one is for "macs with intel chips."

this invent nexw langage and change French into something which not existe and change some english speaker into kind of german 

wierd concept and technology : great on paper but not usable on real life as always with Adobe

Essential Sound is not ready for prime time on INTEL Macs. Works fine on MacBook Pro M3.

Avoid using any Estential Sound settings that repeatedely cause full system crash on Mac INTEL Systems like this one:

Yes thank you, with Sequoia installed the issue is solved for me. The enhancement takes a very long time though.

Despite previous updates, the issue with the "Enhance Speech" function in Premiere crashing on my Intel-based Mac is still not resolved. It took me 4 hours to manually clear the audio types from various clips that were causing the crashes.

Please provide a permanent solution to this problem. As a temporary workaround, I tried uploading the audio to podcast.adobe.com, and it works for now. However, I have sequences with dozens of clips, and having to upload each one individually instead of processing them within the app is very inefficient.

I have an M2 processor, Sequoia V 15.01, Premiere Pro 25 and am still having this issue.  Can we at least turn off the automatic speech-to-text? My only work around is to keep clicking, "cancel all" Why does it have to be automatic?  Why can't we just ask it to be transcribed when we want/need it?

@Alaric0101 this forum thread is about an issue with the Enhance Speech feature on Mac systems with Intel processors. Your system is a Mac with an Apple silicon processor.

You can turn off automatic transcription of your media by going to Settings > Transcription and unchecking "Automatically transcribe clips". You can also find this setting on the right-hand side of Import Mode.

Thank you I figured out how to turn it off, but it still and issue.

Sorry, I posted in the wrong thread. That's not helpful advice though and doesn't change the fact it's a still a problem and clearly, such a big problem it requires multiple threads. Is Adobe still working on this issue? Can you direct me to the correct thread so I can get help? That would be constructive.

I absolutely cannot use Enhance Speech on my Intel-based iMac 27" (3.6 GHz 10-Core Intel Core i9, AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB, 64GB RAM) on Sonoma 14.7.1 and Premiere 25.0.0. I don't even get a kernel panic, I get the spinning rainbow of death and then the computer may eventually shut itself off and restart, coming back to the OS with the message that it was shutdown because of a problem, with a prompt to re-open programs or not.

Most of the time I just shut the iMac down by holding the power button if I get the rainbow because I don't have 10 minutes to sit there waiting for it to finally shut itself down.

Was it working properly before you updated to Premiere 25?  If so, revert to the previous version that was working for you.    One of the great things about Premiere (and all the other creative cloud apps as far as I know) is that you can have multiple versions installed on your system.   In the creative cloud app, in the Premiere Pro  section, just click on the 3 dots and choose other versions.  There is an option to NOT delete other versions...

It has always crashed the system, especially if I use it on more than one clip, or the one clip I use it on is long.
