No Audio Playback in Premiere Pro 2023 - Audio Meter shows that it works - not muted

Hello!

I encounter a really annoying problem which appeared out of nowhere.

Specs:

Processor --> Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz 2.80 GHz

Installed RAM --> 16.0 GB (15.9 GB usable)

System type --> 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Windows 10 Home

Specific problem:

- I have Premiere Pro 2023 and Premiere Pro 2024 both installed. For some reason, the audio playback stopped working on Premiere Pro 2023, but it works on Premiere Pro 2024. They have the exact same settings in Audio Hardware. I checked Audio Track Mixer and Audio Clip Mixer, everything is alright. Layers are not muted and actually all the settings are the same as in previous days. But for some reason only Premiere Pro 2023 sound doesn't work.

Anything outside of Premiere Pro 2023 works, including Premiere Pro 2024, but I need to finish the project in 2023, not 2024 due to my client who insists working on 2023 version.

I tried everything, reset, uninstall/reinstall, restart windows, make new project and put different types of audio files, with and without headphones, moved the audio layer on other layers, enable/disable, mute/unmute, nothing works. When I export the timeline, audio plays, it's just in the timeline that it doesn't work, and only in Premiere Pro 2023.

I tried multiple wav audio files also from this project i'm working on, but also from some stock music websites. I also tried to create a new project and import the whole project with problems, didn't work. I tried to work on Premiere Pro 2024 and export an XML file to use in Premiere Pro 2023, but the whole project has problems in keeping my cuts correct with a nested file.

In the screenshot I provided I wanted to show that the program shows that the file has sounds, has audiowaves, it's just that I won't hear anything within the program, if I export the timeline, the sound is there.

Is there any solution for this problem?

Thank you for your patience!

Hello @Stefan5E21,

I appreciate the information you have provided so far. Hi, I'm Kevin from Support. I am one of the moderators here.

Can you provide more details about your case? The team may want to know more about the media you are using, specifically details about the audio. See: How do I write a bug report?

The free app Media Info can get the nitty-gritty details about the file. If you have time, show them a screenshot of the details in the "Tree" view.

I hope the team will reply as

You might be routing the audio elsewhere via the Playback preferences, and overriding the audio hardware preferences.   This can happen after installing some 3rd party software.  Did you recently install the NewTek NDI software on this computer?

Try:

  1. Open “Preferences>Playback…”
  2. Under the setting “Primary Audio Device”
  3. Make sure the setting is set to “Adobe Desktop Audio”

If it is set to some other device, all audio will be routed away from the audio hardware and to the device selected in the “Primary Audio Device” preference.

Please let me know if this helps or not.

Hello! Thank you for your reply! I didn't install NewTek NDI.

It's strange for me because over the last 8-9 years I solved multiple technical issues, but this one beats me. I have no third-party programs installed neither in Premiere Pro 2023, nor 2024. Over the night it simply stopped working, but the same project opened in 2024 works perfectly fine. I mirrored the settings in both programs, the only difference is that in Premiere Pro 2023 I have no audio feedback [nor headphones, nor speakers of my laptop], even though in the audio meter and Audio track mixer the program recognizes the audio file.

It's not a problem only with this project, even if I start a new project with completely different audio files, I still have this problem.
