P: Captions (608 and 708) set to Roll-Up 2 all default back to Pop On.

Participant ,

I'm tracking down an issue where captions in 608 and 708 tracks and set to Roll-Up 2 (whether each or selecting all and making the change) continue to default to the first item in the list: Pop-On. Captions made within Premiere won't stay as Roll-Up 2, but captions brought in from MacCaption via MCC file maintain Roll-Up 2... which means the part of the show with those captions have Roll-Up 2 but the rest are defaulting to Pop-On, even on output.

Hi @DaveChap,
Thanks for reporting this issue, and @Stan Jones, thanks for your amazing repro steps even while on what I hope is a vacation.  I am able to reproduce this issue and I have filed a bug report.

I hope we can help you soon.

I downloaded 2024.6.4 and it seems to keep the Roll-Up 2 selection and sticks. Bug with 2025?

@DaveChap,

Thanks for the additional response. When I tested this last, it appeared to work correctly, but that has not been for a couple of versions. I'm on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean! I may not be able to test this until I'm home next week!

To be certain, your goal is all captions roll-up 2. But they start as roll-up 2 and change to pop-on?

On preview in PR and on export? Export as embedded or sidecar, and using what for playback?

Hi Stan! The dropdown inside Premiere doesn't seem to be sticky for captions made within Premiere at all, or exported MCC files round tripped back in. But MCC files exported from MacCaption do maintain Roll-Up-2. We want the whole program Roll-Up-2. We're using Premiere to caption the ads and other pieces outside of the main MacCaption chunk, which is causing the disconnect.

We can't embed 608/708 into QuickTime, so we're sidecar-ing the captions, or embedding MXF. We are previewing with Telestream Switch and part of the show is indeed RollUp and the parts that Premiere selected are PopOn.

We are embedding captions into all files with another Telestream product, and delivering embedded (to Aberdeen).

@DaveChap,

Upvoted. Moderator: I'd move this to be a bug report.

I tested in PR 25.0.0 (have not updated to 25.1) and 24.6.3 (have not updated to 24.6.4). I am too far behind on the Beta on this device (Surface Pro) to be worth testing.

Note that PR 2021 and newer (the new captioning workflow) do NOT preview roll-up/paint-on as they had in PR 2020.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/scc-captions-appearing-early-in-premiere-pro...

Doing the test below in PR 2024.x should show that PR prior to 2025 will create and export roll-up/paint-on.

Steps to demonstrate.

Create a sequence from a clip, transcribe the clip.

Create captions from transcription: 608, then 708.

To test this (and later other issues): change the 608 font to Red, Text-type to roll-up, and create a local/project style so it applies to all of the 608 track. And do the same for the 708 track: using Blue and roll-up.

Associated Symptom 1: Note that even though the 708 track should start as pop-on, it says roll-up when a 708 caption is selected. My guess is that the type is NEVER applied to the caption; just the indicator changes. Other than the Text-type, the style appears correctly applied and indicated in the style drop-down.

Associated Symptom 2: Click on the video clip to select it. It now shows in the Properties panel. Now click back on any caption. The Text-type should show roll-up; it shows pop-on.

For the next step - reimport, be sure Edit -> Preferences -> Media has "Include captions on import" checked.

Export the sequence as mxf op1a, selecting captions to embed. (It does not matter which caption tracks are enabled. It will embed both the 608 and 708.) Under General, select the option to import the exported file to PR. I only tested exporting via PR, not AME.

When reimported, drag the file to the new icon, and it will create a sequence with the 608 and 708 tracks. Right-click and "unlink." This allows you to select just one caption. Pop-on is the Text-type.

Expected: Any Text-type will be applied, will show as selected as appropriate, and will be correctly embedded and export in scc/mcc exports.

Hi @DaveChap - Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue.

Can you list your system specs, and which version of premiere pro you are using?

Thanks for the reprducibles steps Stan.

Sorry for the frustration.

Hi @jamieclarke it's not a single system, but I'm on an M4 Max MBP with 15.3, other machines are Mac Pros on Ventura (13.7.3 or .4). I've tried Premiere Pro 25.1 and 25.0 (everyone seems to be on one of those 2 versions) and the problem is there, but not in 24. Also, I tried the latest beta and the problem is still there too.

Just a note here, in 2025 (25.5.0) on Mac, it still can't write the display style. It's always default, or what was set in a previous 2024 project file.

@DaveChap,

I'll test, but not sure what you  mean by "write the display style."

I guess I should have said "commit" the display style in the drop down. It reverts back to default and isn't "sticky."
