This is happening on all of my premiere pro projects. Started when I updated to Premiere 2024. When I look at a video in either source or the timeline, it glitches (see photo). I haven't found anyway to view my footage. The only way to see the real video is by playing the video. This makes it impossible to color correct or colorgrade footage. Please help fix this, it basically is preventing me from editing.

I found a similar issue right after I posted.

I changed my rendering setting to "solo software mercury playback engine" and this fixed the issue.

Hi,

Adobe Premiere Pro community. I see, from all your post on the Adobe Community forum, that you have been experiencing a problem with clips failing to properly preview in the Source Monitor. Clips either go black and white with pixelation blocks or have varying pixelation issues on the preview window. We want to fix this and understand the frustrations you have all been going through. To do so, we first need to be able to reproduce the failure here at Adobe.  Unfortunately, our attempts at re

Hi @anna_anna_,
I moved your post. You're hitting a bug with that specific Mac and this version of Premiere Pro. Sorry for the frustration. Is it possible to roll back your version of Premiere Pro?

Thanks,
Kevin

To anyone with this problem!

I have a workaround which is working so far...

In short, I switched my thunderbolt 3 SSD (a lot of people in this thread are using SSDs) for a slower G-Tech hard drive - and everything is now working fine. I'm using proxies in the edit to cope with the slower drive speed.

I can't say for sure why, but if I had to guess I'd say the glitches are caused by the speed of the drive pushing my 2019 hardware beyond what it expected to handle, and the OS and other software aren't dealing with things properly.

I know this issue has been driving a lot of people nuts so I hope this helps!

Context - I have the same laptop (2019 MacBook MacOS Sonoma) and was using a SanDisk Pro 2tb SSD thunderbolt 3. I tried resetting and some other fixes suggested here, and as for others the 'solo software mercury playback engine' fix was too slow for my needs.

Same problem.

Updated from Sonoma 14.1 to 14.6.1 yesterday.

Launched Premiere Pro today to find it's completely broken.

Never update your OS / drivers / software unless it's borken 🙂

Hi Kevin! Thanks for your message. It was really a bug only when exporting proxies, but it seems to be solved after I made the latest updates of Premiere and OS. Not shure waht happened, maybe also a problem with my battery.

This just happened and I don't know why or how to fix. I have uninstalled and it still had the same issue.

It happens in the preview window, program window, and clip icons in bin. Also when I scroll the video on program is black unless I play the video or manipulate it effect controls.

There are some problems with Macs, especially Macbooks, with the more recent OS installed ... where this happens.

There seem to be some parts that are heat related, some perhaps in the way power use is coded or ... something ... and it is a huge and puzzling problem for many users. But not nearly all users ... which only makes it more puzzling to sort out.

I spent some time on the phone with someone from Adobe and we came up with a workaround, to go into Project Settings and set the renderer to software only.  This makes the app slow, but I've been able to edit and export content without any corruption.  They suggested that I go to Apple and have the graphics drivers reinstalled.  I have not yet done that, though there have been a couple more OS updates since this happened and the problem persists.

Did Adobe fix this yet? I have the same computer as the first two posters and have the same glitch unless the viewer window isn't at 100% zoom.

guys I have texted many times about this problems. I had that from like 7-8 months. I read everything on internet, here from the community, I try everything to fix but nothing. Also the adobe team here is useless, they alway said: "The team is investigating this issue now" look like a bot, many times text like that. My solution was to buy a new macbook (M3). I have to say It's work much faster then before, look total different. I guess Apple do like that, after a while they make their computers slow and unusable for certain things.

This in some cases has been linked to overheating and/or dust buildup on the GPU section of the computer. All on Macs. But not all cases ... seem to be overheating. But it does seem to be a Mac specific thing only on certain Macs. Dang frustrating.

Hello, curious if anyone's seen this display problem before. I think it's related to my graphics card because it goes away if I switch over to software only rendering. The only way I've found to make stop is to fully restart my computer. For whatever reason it goes away once I start playing the video but is like this if I'm paused, usually on an image or mp4 video clip, the .mov clips seem to be okay.

I'm on a 2019 Intel MacBook Pro so graphics card is the AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB. Appreciate any help or suggesions!

This is apparently an issue with the GPU on those Macbooks, it's rather common. It has in some cases been helped by internal cleaning of the laptop so air gets through, but ... perhaps is actually caused by the inability of the GPU to run at the high capabilities needed without overheating ... or something like that.

[SOLVED]

[EDITED] [BUG PERSISTS]

In the text below I had included a possible solution that had temporarily resolved my problem, but in a new project I am having the same problem, however, the settings mentioned previously are not working in my current project, since, when selecting the render option "Mercury Playback Software Only", ended up affecting the opacity of one of the elements in my video and the gltichs remain.

Adobe needs to take action regarding these bugs, as there is no room for so many updates that generate new problems. Therefore, this bug has no definitive solution yet!

_________________________________________

NOTE: The text below is from the moment I thought I had solved it, however, only a certain project I was working on was solved.

I solved it in the following way:

Go to FILE > PROJECT SETTINGS > GENERAL > VIDEO RENDERING AND PLAYBACK > RENDERER and replace the option "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (Metal) - Recommended" with "Mercury Playback Software Only" and click OK.

If it doesn't work, also try this way: Go to PREMIERE > PREFERENCES > MEDIA > At the end, disable the option "Enable hardware accelerated decoding (requires restart)

I had to call Adobe's SAC and they provided support to reach this solution.

Hope it helps you!

Thanks for posting this, @gabrielborghi. Although the bug has still not been officially fixed, this workaround is the best we can do until then. Sorry about that!

Unfortunately, our attempts at reproducing it have been unsuccessful.

This failure is happening in Premiere Pro 24.4 on a Macbook Pro 2019 16'' i7 16GB with Sonoma 14.4.1 and the failure goes away when you switch the Project Settings Render option to Software Only. This is apparently an issue with the GPU on those Macbooks, it's rather common. In some cases, it has been fixed temporarily by internal cleaning of the laptop so air gets through, but … it may be caused by the inability of the GPU to run at the high capabilities needed without overheating. In other cases, users have said changing the option "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (Metal) - Recommended" with "Mercury Playback Software Only" and click OK. Also disabling the option "Enable hardware accelerated decoding (requires restart) Has fixed the issue.

Since this is likely an issue with macOS and GPUs we reached out to Apple. We understand your concerns and frustrations with this being a long-term issue that seems to have no resolution or answer in sight. Know that the support team here at Adobe is working on this and hopes to conclude this issue for all users.
