The burn tool does not work well for this purpose. For example, if you have a picture of someone with blond hair, the tool fails if you wish to make the hair red. In order to accomplish this, I would make a selection of the hair, place the "hair" on a separate layer, open a hue/saturation adjustment layer above the "hair" layer & link these 2 layers (press CTRL+ G). There is a free 30-day trial, and if you like it, you may purchase the license at the expiration of the trial. Howard, Have a look on the type tool's option bar, which is just above the photobin. Are you sure that you are using the horizontal or vertical type tool, not the horizontal or vertical type mask tool? If the ordinary type tool is indeed engaged, reset the tool to default.
