I can't imagine what your graphics card has to do with this. Check your PDF export settings > Compression and use Automatic (JPEG) or JPEG compression. None or ZIP will create a large, uncompressed PDF.

People often assume anything that's printed must be built at 300 dpi/ppi. Fact is, 300 ppi is an arbitrary value that's easy to remember. Beyond that, it's fairly useless. What's important here is to know where and how your job will be printed. As Bob said, 100 dpi or less is often more than sufficient for large jobs like banners, billboards, etc. My advice is to first speak to someone who will be handling the printing. Let them tell you the correct resolution and color space to work with. Don't assume all print jobs must be delivered as CMYK. Doing so will save you a lot of time, aggravation, and storage space.

Robin, your question isn't clear to me either. I'm wondering if maybe your problem is because of the way your Interface option preferences are set? See attached screenshot. If your prefs are set to Never, change them to either Immediate or Delayed (which is the default). Let me know if this helps.

Chick, the very first thing I'd do is uninstall InDesign, delete all prefs (as you did before) and then reinstall the application. Very easy to do, takes little time, and just might solve your problem. Let me know and good luck.

I suggest making a copy of your InDesign Preferences file to save, while you trying resetting your Preferences. On the Mac, here's the path: ~Users/homefolder/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign If, after deleting your preferences InDesign is still running slow, simply replace the new Prefs file with the old. No need to restart your computer in between.

Most books typically start on a right hand (or recto) page. Rectos should be numbered as odd pages. If you want your book to start with a two-page spread, you'll have to either, as you said, leave p1 blank or add some other content. Normally that first page when you open a book is either the Title or Half-Title page. This means your first spread would occupy pages 2-3. BTW, Blurb has excellent customer support. If you're still confused, why don't you just contact them?

I just tried the same thing. My gradient came in exactly as it appears in AI. I did notice two flat areas on the circle when pasted into ID (one at 3 o'clock, another at 6 o'clock), but this can be easily fixed by enlarging the fill content (the gradient) just a touch. Why the gradient colors didn't paste faithfully is indeed odd.

What I do in this case is to choose my printer first. The printer will then supply you with a template for the die-cut that can be placed into InDesign. As Bill Silbert already said, Photoshop is not designed for creating this kind of project (although you could use it if you had no alternative).

When you place a PDF make sure you choose Import Options. On the Mac you can do this by holding Shift before clicking the OK button. Doing so will allow you to place the PDF based on the artbox, bounding box, trim, with transparency, without transparency, etc. My guess is it's one of these settings which is behind your problem.

I tend to agree with Rob Day. The problem sounds to me like ID doesn't like something about the file's formatting. Can you try saving it several different ways (tif, jpg, psd, png, etc.) and see if any of these work?

Just plug-in the page specs you need, and the FOLDRite Template Builder will build a properly sized and labeled InDesign downloadable template. For free. Have a look and see if this doesn't get you want you want.

Bob has the right idea. Don't bother sending any images with the .indd file. The designer will still be able to see something, and relinking the images once the layout is locked will be easy.

Hmm. This is one tough nut to crack. My last suggestion is to reinstall MacOS. Not really that big a deal, but sometimes I've discovered that there's something in the computer's operating system that causes these problems.

Have you uninstalled/reinstalled InDesign? These are obvious things to try, but just want to make sure. BTW, when you uninstall, make sure to delete existing prefs, of course. If the document works on your MBP then obviously the problem is with InDesign itself or something on your iMac that InDesign doesn't like. Another thing to try: reboot in Safe mode (hold down the Shift key after the startup chimes). Rebooting into Safe mode disables all Mac OS system log-in items.

Sounds like you might have a corrupted document. Although rare, sometimes this happens. I assume you've also deleted your InDesign prefs, right? Also, make sure when you uninstall InDesign that you allow it to delete existing preferences, too. Good luck!

If it's only a page number, then your suggestion to set Align Away from Spine works great! But what if the folio also has, for example, the name of the publication and the folio (page #)? In this case you need two different text frames.

Perhaps the hidden Control Bar is part of your Workspace? I would try to reset your Workspace (Window > Workspace > Reset Workspace) or create a new WS with the Control Bar visible.

I would make single page masters with page numbers (folios) flush left and flush right. In use, drag the master to the document page and then delete the unneeded folio (Shift-Command/Control click to release the unwanted folio). Does this help?
