After Effects

I’ve done another deep dive into VFX lore and this time it is about After Effects itself.  The origin story is crazy and to tell it I got to speak to Brian Maffitt (the first video tutorials creator) and Chris and Trish Meyer (the beta-tested v1 and wrote the first book on learning AE).  I also discovered an emulator capable of running AEv1 and got JakeInMotion and SternFX to try it out.If you have a spare 45 minutes, I hope you’ll enjoy learning a bit about the early days of After Effects.

Hi, trying to send logo I extruded via Illustrator and Painter using this tutorial -  In Painter, I use the ‘send to After Effects’ shortcut and the error I receive is this I’m operating on a MacOS and saw that there was a bug fix from August 2025 regarding this, but do you have any suggestions or recommendations?

It seems the last two weeks AE has been hanging more and more. Hangs during document opening about half the time rn. Deleted cache, it helps but doesn’t solve. What solves is restarting, at least mostly and temporarily. I’m on mac os 15.7.5 (sequoia). AE is latest at 26.3.0 build 87

Hi,everytime I try to export an H264 video from After Effects I need to change “Audio Output” to “Audio Output ON” cause if I use “Audio Output Auto” my audio layer hadn’t recognize and output file is without audio.Of course if I use “ON” my output file has audio.Can someone help me?

since the last update I'm facing a problem with text layer properties like I have 2 text layers, I apply effect on the first than once I wanna change properties for the second one it effect the first one only , even if I add more text layers and trying to change properties fro the 3rd one for example position it change the position of the first one only , but when I RESTART AE it works for a while than the same problem!

How to copy object in video and paste that object to another video with that object rigged to fix an Ai text to video generator. Like copy person in video and paste it to a whole another video. What tools and features do I need and where are these tools located?

I want to assign a hotkey for "Snapping" check mark/switch but I didn't find this option in the keyboard settings. Is there a way to do this? I use it very often and on a huge screen it is very inconvenient to constantly reach the top left corner.

Whenever I download AfterEffects templates from stock sites, trying to edit them is a nightmare. I roughly know how to edit the controller layers but it seems like the controller layers really only let me edit text & color, but I want to actually move the objects around, change composition, and even hide layers and make my own changes to the templates. But I for the life of me cannot figure out how to use these templates in a more editable way, the controller layers feel so limiting to me, what am I missing? Is there a way I can turn make these templates more editable? Like release the layers from the controller layers? 

Scratching my head over how to correctly work with D-Log footage from a Ronin in After Effects with ACES color management? Downloaded lots ot LUTs from DJI but not getting the correct results. If anyone has any experience I could really use some help! ThanksNeil

Does anyone have a workflow for this yet?  I’ve seen a few comments saying you can use Claude and After Effects to help edit?  I’ve seen some Higgsfield and After Effects stuff but I’m looking for something specific for my editing workflow.For context I review movies using an animated character that i made in character animator.Right now I’m using Character Animator Where I export my puppet and background into after effects.Once those 2 are in after effects I add the B-roll that im using and match it up to the right parts.My issue is thats it’s so much work, as I’m also adding in cuts to add sound effects and memes to make the video more engaging, but it’s a lot of editing takes me like 4 days sometimes, wanted to speed it up.Has anyone seen anything on this?

Using `.valueAtTime` in an Essential Graphics instance incorrectly returns values relevant to other instances, in what looks like cache collision.This bug is preventing me from migrating my project from an older version of After Effects (23.5), in which `.valueAtTime` and Essential Graphics reacted predictably together. Exact steps to reproduce:Create a composition with a visible layer inside it. Add a Checkbox Control to the layer. Link the layer's opacity (or other visible property) to the checkbox like this: `100 * effect("Checkbox Control")("Checkbox").valueAtTime(time - thisComp.frameDuration)` Add the checkbox control to the Essential Graphics panel. Drop two instances of the composition into a parent composition. This is a recurring issue that started around the time MacOS 26 came out and I’ve been struggling with it ever since. After Effects (and sometimes Illustrator) fail to start. They don’t even get to the splash screen, the freeze before that. They will remain frozen and if you mouse over the control bar at the top, it will show the spinning beach ball. Pressing Cmd +Opt + Escape to open the force quit applications window shows After Effects as not responding.Waiting hours for it to start: No effect. Never starts Force quitting: launches prompts to report the issue to Adobe and Apple. All subsequent attempts to run After Effects get crash repair options but no options do anything. The window has the spinning beach ball when I mouse over it and in Force Quit Applications it shows that After Effects is already not responding. I created a 3D model of an iPhone in Blender, and I can't figure out what format what export settings it should be in so that it appears as I drew it. I don't see the transparency of the glass on the cameras, there is also no noise on the case, the color of the panels and materials are also not what they should be.Tell me what I'm doing wrong? 3D mode in AE - advanced 3D.

It's not possible to right click an effect parameter to reset it in the effect panel, right after loading a saved project.1 - Create a new project, new comp and new solid2 - Apply an effect to that solid, (it doesn't matter which effect)3 - Change one of the parameters to anything different from default,4 - Save the project,5 - Load the saved project6 - Open the effect panel7 - Right mouse click on the parameter from step 3 and hid "Reset"8 - Nothing happens9 - Change anything in any parameter, it doesn't have to be the parameter from step 310 - Reset now works for all parameters The reset should work from the start.I have a few plugins installed, but I don't think this is related.

I made a simple 30second countdown timer - keyframed the value 0,50 (half a min, thus 30 seconds) at 00:00 and then 0,00 at 30:00. I assumed this would change the text every second, however I noticed that the text changed in between two seconds (so instead of the timer still reading 27seconds when I'm at about 00:03 and 5 frames it already changed to 26seconds).Then I thought moving the last keyframe to 31 seconds would fix this, it did not. The time still changed a few frames before the new second.I played around with the last keyframe position, but can't find a spot where it changes exactly on the second, and not a few frames before or after, for every single second.I hope my explanation makes sense.My frame rate is 24fps. Am I using the wrong values for the keyframes? What am I doing wrong?Please help.

Pr2025上でクリップを選択し、Aeコンポジションに置き換えをした後、Aeで作業し、Prの画面を開いて再度Ae上に戻るとプレビューができなくなります。インジケータも動かないです。再生のショートカットも反応せず、手のひらツールに切り替わります。Pr、Aeともに2025版を使っています。

Estou tentando colocar um texto onde a pessoa atravessa este texto, o texto que fica na parte de trás é preenchido normal e o texto que fica na parte da frente é somente o contorno, como fazer isso no AE? porque eu fiz o rastreamento de camera para fixar ele na parede, porém quando tiro o preenchimento para ficar somente a borda ele ficar vermelho e não é isso que quero.

일러스트레이터의 3D and Materials 기능을 활용해 제작한 오브젝트에 그래픽, 텍스쳐를 적용하였는데 이를 obj 파일로 추출하여 애프터이펙트에 삽입하니 모델링만 가져와지고 그래픽과 텍스쳐는 유실되었습니다. .mtl 파일이 함께 생성되었기에 이를 활용할 수 있을지 보았지만 애프터이펙트에서는 .mtl 파일을 지원하지 않더라구요. 일러레에서만든 3d 파일을 텍스쳐 포함된 채로 애프터이펙트에 불러올 수 있는 방법이 있을까요?3D 기능을 활용해야하기 때문에 JPG나 PNG 같은 2D 이미지로 활용하려는 목적이 아닙니다

After Effects (and probably Premiere too) incorrectly reads frames in an H265 lossless encoded video file with open-GOP.It skips some frames and the file sees several frames shorter than it actually is.
