I want to be able to set the text that appears in the title tab for PDFs when they open, and have this text be different to the filename. How do you do this?Ideally I want a way to populate this field based on the bookmap file I start from, second best would be from imported variables. I'm just not sure what to set (in Word the Title property controls it, but manually setting File info > Title, then doing save as PDF from an fm file didn't work, so I'm confused), and how to make that apply to the final PDF...Help appreciated Kat
I write technical manuals with Framaker 2019 and I face an issue. Inside a manual I have to enter programming code examples. To highlight them from the rest of the standard text, I put a grey background and to so I simply copy the code inside a on cell table to put a grey background. However, I now have long examples, longer than one A4 page, and with framemaker it is not possible to split one cell table over more than one page (as MS Word does it). How can I then still manage this grey background area over several pages?Best regards
FrameMaker & Extendscript newbie here. Hope I get the terminology close. I am supporting a documenter that wants to remove "everything" related to all character formats, tags, etc.. For instance, in the included image, he wants the to remove the "Bold" tag and format from the document. Can anyone help.
Hello FM community,Environment: I'm using FM2019 unstructured creating multiple (25) books for PDF only output. I posted a few weeks ago about a 25 book project that needs be heavily cross-referenced. With help from this community, I was able to start my project. I am methodically going thru all the books, and just finished #7 (of 25).This morning, I just noticed that many of my cross references are pointing to the wrong place. I've recreated these x-refs, confirmed that are correct, and it still seems to happen.Has anyone ever experienced x-refs that go to the wrong place? I know that when creating the book PDF both books being connected need to be open. I'm doing this. I'm wondering if perhaps:Perhaps I need to have all book FM files open? Up to now, I simply open the book the reference is going to, but not the actual fm file within that book. But then why do some x-refs work, and not others?Very perplexing. Any comments are appreciated.
A contractor sent in some FM files that I cannot open. He worked on them in a trial version of FM 2019. I only have FM 2017. Is there an easy way to convert the FM 2019 files to FM 2017?
I have Adobe FrameMaker 10 installed in an old computer. We just recently bought a new computer and I would like to know how can I uninstall from the old computer and Install it to the new one. Appart of that, I have the serial number of the FrameMaker 10. The package comes with a CD installation process (new computer does not have CD anymore) which I cannot use with the new one.Adobe support could you help me with that? Thank you!
I have just installed FM19 on Windows 10. I have an old FM document coming from Windows XP.When I open any of the book's all fm files I get the message:"Document named xyz.fm has catalog definitions that use unavaliable fonts. Formatting and printing are not affected because these catalog definitions are not currently used in the document. OK to continue?"This happens every time I open a fm file, even if the same fm file has been opened several times before.(Probably Arial Black something.)How can I get rid of this problem? I have hundreds of fm files, so it would be great if I could avoid editing each file's catalog definition.
Hi forumers - my first post here!I've just fired up Fm 2017 and am a complete novice.I understand the DITA concept but cannot grasp how DITA topics are "injected" into maps or books with master pages and reference pages etc. In short - how do I assemble topics into an illustrated document with a fixed style. Are there any books I could look at?Thanks in advanceNKB69
In FrameMaker 17, this is the message I'm getting when I try to save a book or document as a pdf: FrameMaker could not find Adobe PDF printer instance, which must be installed to execute Save as PDF command..... Please Help! I need this functionality for the links... I've already uninstalled/reinstalled a few times.... Thanks!
Hi, helpful people! I'm hoping this is an easy question to answer. It seems simple enough, but I haven't been able to find anything in the available resources. I have a book that consists of a dozen or so chapters of 10-12 pages each, giving me a book of approximately 140 pages. The book applies for multiple different products, where I use conditional text for each product. So the total page count is unique for each product's version of the book. The pages are numbering correctly throughout, but I want to have the page number in the footer read as "Page [page number] of [total pages in book]" -- for example, "Page 47 of 140." I know that the variable "$curpagenum" will give me the current page number, but is there a variable for "total pages in book"? If not, how would I create one? Would I need to make it a user variable that I update each time I create a new version of the book? Thanks, and apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere.
I'd like to be have the page numbering skip a file in a book, for example, so that the page numbering in file 3 continues from the last page in file 1. I know that sounds odd, but I can't rearrange the files because I need the paragraph numbering to be continuous through all three files in that order. Can this be done?
At some point while formatting a document I insterted a page break... I think and now after editing the document I am left with an odd un-natural gap in text I played around with the pagination and I enabled text symbols to see if I could figure out what was causing this and at this point anything I have tried is not doing anything for correcting the issue.
I have been experiencing problems with HTML5 generated by FrameMaker. When I open a Fm book and generate HTML5 from it, the HTML5 is OK. But if I then edit a .fm file in my book, update the book, and regenerate HTML5, then the output HTML5 does not give me the content from the edited .fm file but the pre-edited .fm instead. Odd. If I then save my files, close FrameMaker, re-open and regenerate HTML5, all is OK. Odd. Furthermore, I have found that the problem seems to depend on whether I am logged into my company laptop as myself or as a temporary user (temporary user has been set up to be the same as my own user login). But I find that: my own user login gives me my HTML5 issue; yet the temporary login does not. Odd. Also, I have discovered that, with my HTML5 problem condition, if I rename the .fm file that is not properly been shown in my HTML5 output, and then update the book and re-generate HTML5, then the HTML5 output does
Windows 8.1, FrameMaker 2015 13.0.5.547When using the Equation pod suddenly most characters (Calculus, Symbols, Relations) are displaying as normal characters instead of symbols. No fonts have changed on my desktop to my knowledge.FrameMaker does not report any missing fonts. When I export the document(s) to PDF the equations do display correctly.I have tried purging preferences and font cache and FrameMaker still displays equation characters incorrectly.Tried uninstalling and reinstalling FrameMaker, no difference. Equation editing and display is normal in Microsoft Word but I do not know if FrameMaker uses the same font. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi allIt's a very simple question but I'm unable to find a solution. Is it possible to move the "Title 2" under the image without insert line breaks manually? The anchoring position of the image frame is set to "Run into paragraph". I'm using FM 2019 unstructured and pdf output. Thanks a lot
Hi, For one of my clients I must use the font Forgotten Futurist. FrameMaker does have a problem with that font. After about 100 trial and errors (each time FrameMaker closed immediately) I found out that the single apostrophe sign was the culprit.Does anyone recognise this problem? Maybe a solution?Gert Zwart, Technisch Consult Zwart
I could really use some tips on re-creating a cover page that was originally created in Word. A version of this page is used for seven different manuals for similar products, and I currently have a single book for all seven manuals (using conditional text). Because some of the information (such as logos, variables, contact info, etc.) doesn't change across manuals, I'm thinking I can just put a lot of it into a "CoverPage" master page. The information that does change (including a couple of jpgs of the product) will go into the body page, with conditional tags. Does this make sense so far? If I'm making this more difficult than it should be, please let me know! I have learned enough of FrameMaker by now to be at the "knows-enough-to-really-screw-things-up" level. My main question at this point has to do with how I create the "header" text at the top of the cover page. There are logos, plus a line, and the text above that line has several different font sizes (so I can't
(also posted to techshoret) My apologies if I'm asking something trivial. I haven't used FrameMaker for a while and am not yet familiar with the most recent versions. Problem statement: We have a User's Guide for a product that has multiple (~15) different flavors so we have that many guides. I would like to unify them into one guide with conditional text. The basic format is the same for all flavors. The main difference lies in sections containing lists of parameters and their values; these change with each milestone of a flavor.Whenever a product is built, the build process generates the relevant lists. These are then manually copied into the document for the specific flavor (a rather painful process). Each "flavor" requires several builds in the course of a year, so the tech writer needs to do all this around 50-60 times. Engineering will provide me the information in whatever format I want (or so they say), and will place it in a drive that I can access. My plan is to
Hi All, I have a document open in FrameMaker. I want to save a copy of the document, while leaving the current document open. So, instead of Save As, I want to do Save a Copy. Has anyone done this with the FDK or ExtendScript and will share some code. I see some FDK options that may relate to this: FS_RetainNameStripe, FS_SaveAsModeName, FS_SaveMode. I can play around with these but was hoping someone already figured this out. Thanks in advance. -Rick
I have a four-page chapter in a book I'm working on. This book applies to seven different products, so I have conditional text for each of those. There are quite a few product-specific tables in the manual, so if you are viewing the conditional text for all products at once, my little 4-page chapter becomes a 22-page chapter. Everything was worked fine until today, when I had to create a new "NarrowMargin" master page to accomodate a 16-column table that needs to be there for five of the products. I specified that page 4 of the body pages should use the NarrowMargin master page. Page 4 looks good. However, if I'm viewing the document for only one product (i.e., I've hidden the conditional text for all other products), I now I have 18 blank pages following page 4. I can delete those pages easily enough (Format > Document > Delete Pages) but they come back as soon as I switch to view the conditional text for a different product. I hope that makes sense. I suppose I d
Hi All,I am trying HTML5 outputs in FM2019.My Mini-TOC looks great in PDF but not satisfactory in HMTL5. Where is the setting that allows me to set the text colour, font, dot leader, underline etc. for Mini-TOC in HTML5? The following 2 screenshots are of the PDF (that I like) and the HTML5 (that looks very amateurish). Thanks in advance for your help, RegardsApurva
Hi All, I have a structured FrameMaker document the wraps Table Continuation variables in a <table-continued> element. When I save the individual document to XML, the element is correctly closed: However, if this document is part of a book and save the book as XML, the element is not correctly closed and the XML parser reports an error. Any ideas why I am getting this behavior? Thank you very much.-Rick
I am trying to set up headers and footers in a new document, and I want to have a single line above the text in the footer. Here is a master-page view of the footer without the line: Here's what it looks like when I click to add a single line in the frame above the paragraph (using the paragraph designer). Out of curiosity, I clicked to add a double line above the footer and got this:(The vertical line in the middle of each image is my cursor.)Does anyone know what might be going on here? This worked fine in the header (when I used the paragraph designer to add a single line below the text). Thanks! UPDATE: I realized after posting that, if I scroll down and back up, the footer text appears on the page. The extra line is still there, though. Here's what it looks like when I've added a single line above the text:
I create a workspace, I save it. After a few days, the workspace disappears - including the worksapce I saved. Again, this is AFTER SAVING the workspace. There is nothing that I know that i am doing that is causing this. Any ideas?
I was able to connect to our SharePoint repository and use the Check out and Open feaure. But, when I save the document and try to check it in, the check in option is greyed out. (Cancel checkout is also greyed out.)
