FrameMaker

How can I change the order of Reference Pages? I want to add pages between existing ref pages to keep related information together.

Since there are a number of ways to produce PDF from FrameMaker, and even more options when using DITA, I recorded this short (4.5 minute) video for my online course, Authoring Structured Content in FrameMaker, that describes the options. Apologies for the lower resolution...I recorded in 1080p for the course, but the Community upload limit was too low for the full resolution.  If you need to work through available DITA PDF output options, I hope this helps you decide which way to go! -Matt

I'm trying to insert the "otherprops" DITA attribute into the footer of my FrameMaker template master first page. It seems like the format for the variable should be <$attribute[otherprops]>, but that isn't working.  What am I missing? I'm not seeing an example of a DITA attribute format in any discussion or example that I can find.

Yesterday one of my product managers told me that their product is in the final stages of being certified for sale in the EU, and asked me if we have a translation firm we work with since some EU countries require native language documents. Target is about 6 months from now.   As far as I know, my company has never had anything translated.   So far I only have one document that would be needed for this product, but it's in unstructured FrameMaker and makes fairly extensive use of variables. I think there's only one condition in use, though, for commenting/questions.   All graphics use callouts with a separate, FM table as a legend. I've also been working on consistency in information presentation and words by applying the principles of simplified technical English as far as I can and also using AutoText to insert standard language for procedures and descriptions. Hi, I am attempting to use an SGML DTD in FrameMaker. When I open the DTD, I specify SGML, but I get "Length of name, number, or token exceeded the NAMELEN limit" errors and my element/attribute names are initial caps. I think I need an SGML application set up ahead of time, but I don't know the syntax for avoiding the NAMELEN errors and preventing element/attribute capitalizations changes. Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Frame is now adding the first line of text in a file to the left-hand HTML navigation, even if that line of text doesn't appear in the TOC and even if the paragraph tag is excluded from the HTML content. Previously, if you excluded the TOC file from the output and generated the HTML, it would use the file names of the individual files in the book. Now, if you exclude the TOC, it uses the first line of text.  For example, if you have a volume title as the first bit of text in a chapter, a chapter title as the second line, and you generate a TOC with the chapter title but the volume title not included, itstill  adds the volume title into the left hand nav bar above the chapter title when you generate the HTML. 

Hi,   I was asked to create a PDF/X-4 compliant PDF. The corresponding joboptions file is in my Roarming folder: c:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\16\Additional_PDF_Settings\PDFX4.joboptions This video says that I should I copy it to the Adobe PDF Roarming folder: https://video.tv.adobe.com/v/32429t1 c:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\PDFX4.joboptions OK. I did this. In FrameMaker I can now select this joboptions file to create a PDF or to print to a PostScript file. However, Distiller does not find this joboptions file. What do I have to do? I restarted everything, but PDF/X4 is not listed. I need to print to a PostScript file and then distill, as I should also print to a larger paper size with registration marks.   In the Acrobat forum there is e.g. this post. As far as I can tell, FrameMaker assigns the text and formatting for note types from the EDD, i.e., when you set the type attribute of a note to "danger", you get DANGER: as the prefix. To translate the prefixes to a different language, do I need to edit the EDD? 

Hi,   Another PDF/X issue. Currently Distiller has only the PDF/X-3:2002 joboptions. When I create a PostScript file (copyright page with only a single paragraph) and distill this file with these joboptions, I get this error message: [Violation] Annotations were found inside the BleedBox, TrimBox, or ArtBox on the following pages ...   When I create the PostScript file, I have selected the Adobe PDF printer and Generate Acrobat Data, so that I can select the PDF/X-3 joboptions. When I deselect Generate Acrobat Data, Distiller creates the PDF without error message. However, then FrameMaker ignores the PDF/X-3 joboptions.   Best regards, Winfried

Hi All, I am helping a client produce AMM and IPC documentation for a particular aircraft. They have purchased the DTDs etc., but I am a little fuzzy on setting up a FrameMaker structured application based on these DTDs. I can open the DTD with FrameMaker as SGML and get an EDD, but I do get some parser errors. I need to ask my client more questions, like what are their deliverables, etc.    I need some help getting started and have budget for this. Is there other information that I need to get from my client? Thank in advance.

I have installed the newest beta (3) and nothing seem to work anymore... The procedure is described in https://www.daube.ch/docu/files/FMjsxLib.pdf, page 262ff. I don't mange to run not even the simplest script. With the previous beta (2) I could work reasonably.

I have a document made in Structured FrameMaker 2020 and it is causing a lot of problems.I want to create an xliff file, but the document keeps crashing. I have tried taking out all images and flattening all cross references.  I have tried saving as mif. I can do that,  but then I am not able to open the mif file without FrameMaker crashing. I have tried using a external xliff tool (Xliff Manager) to create the xliff based on the MIF file, but while I CAN create an XLIFF file, FrameMaker won't eat it.There is "something" wrong with the document, but I just can't figure out what is causing the trouble. Everything looks ok. File insets, Cross References, Structure is valid...Can anybody suggest an approach to figure out what is causing the problems?

Hello! I set the same flow to 3 textframes. In the first frame I have the chapter name, the second frame I have the subchapter name and the third frame the content frame.When creating the TOC the first frame keep with the chapter name. the problem it's that the insertion of the TOC are inserted in the second frame and not in the thrid frame.Before:   After TOC update:

We are having the same issue with FrameMaker version 15.0.2.503. 

I am changing the color definitions programmatically using F_ApiSimpleImportFormats method and after that if i try to save the document using F_ApiSave, it saves the document in ViewOnly mode. What can be done to save document in editable mode only?I am using FrameMaker 2019 edition.

Hi all, This is a FYI, in case you come across this particular bug. A customer's user was opening books in FrameMaker but the book pod/panel was not shown. The book was shown in the Open Files pod/panel, however the Window->Composite Documents was enabled but no nothing was visible, as shown below.  The cause was that both values for RMViewLeftDocked were zero. For FM2020 the first value seems to have to be 25 or more, and I have not worked out the y or second value as yet. For FM2020 with update 4, File->Exit hangs and closing the book in the Open Files pod/panel crashes FM. For 2019 with update 8 File->Exit exits cleanly while closing the book in the Open Files pod/panel crashes FM. In my view FrameMaker should not 'not show' the book pod/panel if the settings for RMViewLeftDocked are below the minimum for the display. I am having issues with Japanese and Chinese translated MIFs.When I open the MIFs the Japanese and Chinese characters do not display correctly.I had no issue when I opened the Italian and Spanish files.Please help with specific details on the resolution. 

Hi, we cannot install FrameMaker 16 (2020) to a Windows 10 computer. We have had the same issues before. This time the given instructions on  helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/update-operating-system-and-browser.html do not help. Do you have another idea, how we can solve this strange problem?Update requiredYour browser or operating system is no longer supported. Maybe you need to install the latest operating system updates first.  

Hi,   A few days ago I created a PDF via Distiller and not with the FrameMaker PDF engine. I noticed that during the print process FrameMaker changed the line break of a paragraph. After the PDF was created, FrameMaker changed the line break of this line back. Bad as this was the title page. My default printer is the local office printer. The font is Google Open Sans. When I changed the printer to Adobe PDF, I did not get this issue.   I did not know that FrameMaker changes the pagination with the printer (as Word does)! I had never noticed this although I work with FrameMaker for many years. Probably I will check, if I can automate this with AutoHotkey or AutoIt. In FM 2020 the little SetPrint utitility does not work, probably because this was compiled for 32 bit and not 64 bit.   But still, why does FrameMaker change the line break?    Best regards   Winfried

I am trying to pull out the values from F_StringsT array but i am not getting exact string values as i want.In my case i have a variable colorType of type F_StringsT and if i use following code it return values as specified -StringT test = colorType.val[0]; In this case value of test is  0x0F19D690and value returned by *colorType.val[0]; is "81 'Q'" (within double qoutes).What i want to get back is literal string "QRH". Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. 

I am trying to save the individual documents in a book after making some modifications programmatically using F_ApiSave method but it saves the doucuments as view only by default. But i want to keep the documents as editable after saving. So if anyone knows any params to pass to F_ApiSave that can keep my document as editable.F_ApiSimpleSave is also saving the documents in view only mode.For F_ApiSave i am using default input params and i am saving the document as frame document only.Any help would be appreciated.
