ProRes Raw unrecoverable highlights in After Effects

I am unable to adjust highlights properly in After Effects 24.6.1. with a ProRes Raw video file.

I am working with a 2019 Mac Pro 3.3Ghz 12 core machine with 96GB Ram on OS 14.5 Sonoma.

Note the attached screen captures.  Quicktime player shows all the detail in the highlights, though the look is flat.  In Premiere Pro the video looks hot, but I am able to recover highlights and make the shot look good.  In After Effects, I am unable to bring back the detail in the hightlights.

The reason I am using After Effects is to do some stabilization using motion tracking.  After stabilizing the shot in After Effects, I tried correcting the image, but given how bad the video looks, I can't use it.

There are two images attached.  In the layout of the two images, Premiere Pro is in the top left, Quicktime player top right, file properties bottom left, and After Effects bottom right.  One screen capture shows the video corrected in Premiere Pro (top left quadrant), and the other shows the video in Premiere Pro without any correction (top left quadrant).

Any thoughts as to why in After Effects the clip looks so crappy?  Any solutions?

Thank you!

Unfortunately, your screenshots are identical, and we can not see what workflow you use in After Effects or Premiere Pro. I would probably start with Lumetri in AE.

Hello Rick, Sorry about the duplicate showing the top left Adobe Premiere with corrected video using Lumetri.  Below is the video with Lumetri off (in its original state before correcting).  So, in answer to your suggetion, I did try to correct the video in After Effects with Lumetri, but no matter what I tried including various LUTs curves and even going so far as seeing if auto exposure and color could do anything for the image), I couldn't get the sky and clouds to show the detail you can see in the quicktime player (top right of the screenshot) and in the other screenshot where Lumetri is engaged.  The video itself is a 6k video that I created a new composition from - at the resolution of the video (6016 x 3200).  All of the programs have Metal on.Premiere Pro before highlights are corrected.jpg

In Premiere Pro, I created a project with the first clip being the clip in question which set the project parameters.  From there I played with Lumetri and was able to make the shot work; but without the motion tracking that I need in After Effects.

Hi Jack,

Still rather difficult to assess what's occurring in AE without seeing your AE Project color management settings, as well as the Interpret Footage color management settings for the ProRes Raw footage.
A simple AE project with a sample of the footage causing the issue imported into a comp — which shows the problem — would definitley be the most helpful way for us to understand what's occurring.

We have also been making significant improvements in this area for our next major release. You might want to give the current After Effects 25.0 Beta release a test and see if it is functioning more correctly for you in this context.
