Issue: image layer is unusually masked by shape layer

There's odd behavior when adding a shape layer below an image asset. Of course, I can create a shape layer on an image asset to get an actual mask but this is something entirely different. I'm not sure if there's been an update in the past few years that I didn't catch but it keeps happening in different projects. I believe it's also happened before upgrading to 2019.

This is in AE CC 2019 Build 235 on OSX 10.14.

Any ideas?

Oh this is an interesting one. R Neil HaugenAnn Bens have a look at this. Very weird behaviour. I see all mode switches are normal. No subtraction etc. No mattes. Seems like a glitch for sure. OP perhaps trash and reset your preferences and see if that does the trick. Very interesting. Haven't seen this sort of issue before

I thought about resetting the prefs but it seemed like a strange fix (as compared to other pref reset issues), but it did the trick from what I can see.

Thanks, @Mo_Moola!
