P: Frame substitution attempt aborting error - .MXF Files Fixed in version 25

Explorer ,

UPDATE 10-14-24:

MXF file frame substitution errors has been fixed in version 25 of Premiere Pro

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've seen a number of posts about this, and am now running into the problem myself. Although there are a few differences I'd like to share that I'm hoping may shed more light on what appears to be a longstanding issue.

Specs: M3 Max Macbook Pro (64GB RAM), Sonoma 14.3.1, Premiere Pro 24.1.0

The .MXF files were shot XAVC-I from the Sony FX6 shot on a V90 card. I copied the entire memory card structure to my internal drive, and imported the clips using the media browser. The clips are 59.94 fps and 23.976 fps on a 23.976 timeline.

As I perform regular editing tasks (slowing 59.94 clips to 40%, adding clips to timeline, scrolling through), I get these error messages.

BUT, here's the kicker: I'm not actually seeing dropped frames yet. For one of the clips I received the error on, I decided to go to the source window and scroll through frame by frame. I didn't see any black frames, but scrolling through did create 9 new error messages at different frames.

Aside from the error popups being annoying, this is a project that many people are depending on. If these dropped frames actually do end up showing, I'll be in a bad spot. It seems as though with every new project, I have to factor in at least a day to deal with errors or bugs in Premiere. I shouldn't have to be constantly fighting with the tools that allow me to do my job. Moreover, the C70 and FX6 both shoot in .MXF and are fixtures of video production. Frankly, I'm taken aback that there hasn't been more meaningful support from Adobe on this.

I'm currently creating ProRes Proxies to see if that may solve the issue, but I'm concerned that this will only solve the problem in editing, and the error (dropped frames) may show up once exported.

Does anyone have thoughts on why this may be happening? Is it time to switch to Resolve like everyone seems to be saying, or could this be a workflow issue on my end?

Many thanks!

Hi @rranney - Can you try installing 24.5 and then manually deleting the folders Media Cache, Media Cache Files, Peak Files, then launch 24.5 and let us know if that helps you.  These files on windows are usually at Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common

This issue has been ongoing with MXF files for a number of versions now. I use MXF files coming from Canon Cinema cameras with the identical issues on any computer system, local or remote files.

I am having the exact same issue with Canon MXF files and before the 24.5 update I was exporting half hour tv shows in 10-12 minutes. I did a test on one today that had exported fine 2 days ago and it took over 8 hours.

This is on a system running Windows 11

256GB RAM

256GB VRAM on NVidia RTX 3090

Ryzen Threadripper 3.8GhZ

All on internal SSDs

I have done a clean install using the Adobe Remove tool, and cleaned caches, created new projects, etc etc all the listed things.

"We are currently tracking and working on a fix for these."

Kevin-Monahan
"The bug is being worked on by the team, so I updated the status."

This seems to be a problem with Premiere Pro which is known to Adobe, yet it is not listed in Known Issues.

Is there a reason Adobe is not communicating this issue to its users?

R.

I have a similar setup and experienced the same issues except I had to revert back to 3 versions ago (per Adobe support) to get it to work again. Even now, it's still sketchy at times. 1.5 hours on the phone with support...they need to fix this asap...may have to revert to DiVinci

Version 24.5 has gone from error messages and artifacts to just suddenly shutting down.  Everything stops, you can't save, a pause, and gone.  I don't recomment updating to 24.5

This worked for me also! Project clips (4K MXF shot of Canon C70) started throwing errors and refused to play after restarting PrPro multiple times. Holding Shift and resetting plugin cache and clip cache, and working great again.

It's outrageous now. I have the same problem and can't even open the project with my mxf files (Sony FS7) anymore. It doesn't matter what I wanna do. It's immediately shutting down. I have a deadline on Friday and can't work with Premiere anymore.

My computer setup:

Imac Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020

Intel Core i9-10900K 3.70GHz

AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 8 GB

32 GB Ram

Sonoma 14.4.1

Adobe Premiere Pro Beta Version 24.6.0 BETA (Build 30)

So, I have a Canon C70. And record almost all my work in Log 2. Never had any issue playing MXF from my Camera. Never had done any proxy.

How I record my MXF files:

Canon Log 2

XF-AVC YCC422 10bit

3840x2160 Long GOP

Frame Rate 23,98P

Nomal Recording mode

Since April I have experiencing things like playback freezes, errors retrieving frames, frame substitution recursion attempt..., etc.

No plugins installed, no markers, caches have been reset and drivers are updated.

I described this issue last April and I was advised by a Adobe expert to jump into Beta version. In the begining I have tought that Primeire beta was playing better my MXF files, but as the time passed, I noticed that Premeire still struggling against MFX files.

I try Jamie Clarke's pinned reply and it doesn't work either. Does Adobe aware about it? How long should we wait until Adobe fix this bug?

Thanks a lot.

I just updated Premiere Pro to 24.5.0 (Build 57) after months of problems with Sony MXF files.  I often shoot in 4K and edit in 1080p for the focal length flexibility, and I thought 4K was the problem.  I'm on a Mac mini m2Pro chip with 32Gb memory.  I did all the things I could find to speed up my system to no avail.  I was even having problems shooting and editing MXF files in 1080p, but also realized I have another Premiere project from a graphic designer that has no video, and this system performs perfectly with that project which has nested sequences 4 layers deep. (I don't know why the designer doesn't use After Effects, but that's another question for another time.) I came to this forum to research my issue, and everyone came through.  Extra thanks for the clearing the media cache info. I opened the project after the update, and all is well.

Same thing for me. Two years ago this was a problem and no different now.  I have gone back to Premiere 2021 v15 which lets me work wtih MXF files with few problems.
