FrameMaker

Hi--I create parts manuals with imported graphics on each page. To make my proofing/editing work easier, I'm trying to find a way to display the names of these graphics on each page. I thought a user-defined variable added to the master page footer might work, but I haven't been able to find any examples of how to construct such a variable. I do know how to generate a list of all references--my question is about whether or not it is possible to display the names of the references on the page where they are actually located.  Any thoughts or suggestions?  Thank you! 

Hi again. The books I'm working on are set up so that there's a TOC at the top of the left-facing page, then an index begins below that and continues on the right-facing page. The way I've been doing it is generating a standalone index and a TOC, then cut-and-paste into the spread. I know that's probably the FM equivalent of making 3 left turns to go right. What I really want to do is have the Index and TOC set up as they're meant to be, so that refreshing the book updates those items automatically. Is there a way to set that up so the two generated items can be on the same page and both do the auto-updates? Do I instead have to do a mini-TOC or something? Thanks.

HiThe company I work with has several FM subscriptions; we're all using FM 2019 (15.05.838) because (since updating to Win 11) we've been unable to run the more recent updates. Next week a new user is joining and will need to install a new copy of FrameMaker. So several questions which I had been deferring because they were not urgent have now become more pressing.Because our maker.ini etc are under source control, we all need to be on the same FM version; install together, and update together.What might be the simplest option: can I install a brand new copy of FM 2020 myself, run it simultaneously with my current FM 2019 on my laptop with my single subscription while I identify any changes/improvements and document them for the rest of the team, and then we can all jump to FM2020 next week?The more complicated option is expecting the new user to find the 15.05.838 installer and run it on her laptop, because I expect that she would have exactly the same issue with completing the instal

All of our chapters and book files are saved in our network drive. The network drive has not been touched or moved at all. I got a new computer. I downloaded FrameMaker. When I opened a book file, all chapter files were not linked even generated files such as Table of Contents. It can find/relink it if I opened the chapter files from file explorer while I have the book file open.Is there a better solution to re-link all these files?

Hi,I am using FM 2015.The following has happened to me many times. I have not found a pattern as to why or when. Has anyone else seen something like this?The case is like this. I have text and I want to insert a space and a new word.For example, today I had the following text:"Each checker actual output argument shall be variable_lvalue or net_lvalue."I want it to read"Each checker actual output argument shall be a variable_lvalue or an net_lvalue."adding " a" after "be" and " an" after "or".However, when I typed the additional text, with the space before them, I got the following:"Each checker actual output argument shall bea variable_lvalue oran net_lvalue."Track edits is on.What I actually see are the inserted spaces, but they are crossed-out red, i.e., deleted by FM.I work around this by forcing spaces, using CTRL + space, but I should not have to do this.Any ideas?I have already asked Barb Binder privately, but she said she never said or heard of this.Thanks!Shalom

I am generating pdf files from FrameMaker 2019 using Publish. I need print marks, but it seems it is TOMBO print marks I am getting and not Western. Where can I control this behaviour?

I have never before had any need for password protecting my pdf files, but now I do. FM 2019 had built-in password protection in the Publish dialogue, but what has happened to that feature in FM2020?...Has it been moved somewhere else? ... 

Dear experts, You know the access keys which are indicated in the label of a button or menu item by underline. For example, you press the Find button in the Find/Change panel by using Alt+f. I have discovered that this mechanism does not work in ES palettes, but works correctly in ES dialogs. You can test this with the following script by exchanging the window definition. Run it in ESTK with taget ESTK or in FM with the appropriate target definition. I have not found any documentation about this, neither in the CC Javascipt Tools Guide, nor in the Adobe FrameMaker Scripting Guide. Even Peter Kahrel does not mention this 'feature' in his famous ScriptUI for Dummies. → Is this a bug or a known difference? Any documentation about this? FrameMaker 2020 (16.0.4) refused to start AGAIN this morning: no splash screen and no FrameMaker process running in the Task Manager. At first, I thought this was the same bug as in Frame 2015. A couple of weeks ago, I was able to fix the problem by renaming or deleting the Linguistics folder in: C:\Users\Your.Name\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe But now, this little trick does not seem to work. I have created a one-page template and added one layer component so within that layer component I have added two images one by one. So my requirement is if I drag or resize the component second component automatically gets up in one line. e.g first image is left side and the second image is the right side. If anyone suggests one to me.

I've had this happen a few times... I have a document with equations and they all suddenly disappear. The equation boxes are still there but there is nothing in them.  Anyone know how to resolve this?

Using FrameMaker 16.0.2 with DITA 1.3 We have maps that are filtered for various products. The product-specific cover page content is stored in the prodname element of the ditamap. The title element is a generic "Operator's Guide" and we want the product-specific information to appear as the title page bookmark in the PDF, we also want the product-specific information to appear in the PDF title bar. For example, the operator's guide map is used for a series of products. The map metadata includes a series of prodinfo elements to record the system name. The map title is Operator's Guide. On our cover page, the prodname element is used for the main title. The map title (Operator's Guide) is used as a secondary title on the cover. See the attached image. Currently, we are manually altering the PDF title in the rendered document as they all appear as Operator's Guide. Hi,   I have the problem, that in FM 16.0.4 the Splitter utility disappeared. https://community.adobe.com/t5/framemaker-discussions/utility-split-current-document-disappeared/m-p/13071495 As I need this utility, I wanted to install also 16.0.3, the last version where this worked. I wanted to install 16.0.3 in a different folder, so that 16.0.4 will not be affected. However, I cannot change the installation path. The installation of 16.0.3 would always overwrite 16.0.4. Also when I started the setup of 16.0.3 as administrator, I could not change the installation path. Is there anything which I have to do?   Best regards   Winfried

Hi to all,I wish to push meta data (like copyright, author, title) directly from FM into the PDF (or other media) without filling data manually for each book - I seek an automated solution - so a quite effortless process.I thought of using the FM "file info" but seems that in FM 2019 variables cannot be used.OR did I missed a special trick?If no trick: What about FM 2020 - does it work in 2020? Any other idea? I recently got "refreshed" to  new (Win10) computer at work, which involved reinstalling FrameMaker and Acrobat Pro (and in the process, I got FM updated to 16.0.4). I quickly discovered that my usual method of generating PDFs -- File --> Print Selected Files.. to generate a .ps file, and then distilling it to PDF with Distiller -- no longer worked: It generated a 0kb .ps file. Initially, I couldn't print directly to PDF, either, though (re)setting the Adobe PDF printer instance to be my default (i.e., rather than selecting it in the Print dialog) seems to have fixed that. So I can actually generate the PDFs I need now, but I'm curious: Did something happen to the ability to print to .ps? The "new" method works; I'm wondering why the method I've been using for years and years... doesn't.

For my script FMfindRepl I want that the user can handle occasionally long drop-down lists similar to the quick catalgoues: typing a character sequence to select the appropriate item. It turns out that the keyName in the event handler does not give useful results for national characters (non-ASCII letters) such as the German umlauts or French accented character - which I can get on my Swiss-German keyboard with ease. Hi. I upgraded to Framemaker 16.0.4.1062, and now when I export a pdf with Gujarati text, the letter spacing is haywire. I've tried Arial Unicode and Adobe Gujarati. Same result. This text pdf'd fine with Framemaker 2017, and still does with MS Word or Adobe InDesign. Help?

Hello everyone, I'm authoring content in DITA 1.3 in FrameMaker 2020.If I change the value of the 'frame' attribute on a <fig> element, the value is reset when I save and reopen the file. (The 'frame' attribute adds a border to figures in the output.) This only seems to happen with the 'frame' attribute.And it happens whether I change it in either authoring or XML view. I am not very familiar with creating/customizing structured apps, so I don't know if there is a file I should edit.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Adobe Support says it cannot do anything and that my request must be posted to a forum.  I'm here now, but I doubt Adobe wants a product serial number and an authorization number posted here in order to get an authorization code response from Adobe support.  The online support says adobe also monitors these forums.  So are you here?????Adobe, give me an answer:  how do I move an older Adobe Framemaker product from one computer I am retiring to a new computer?By the way, deactivation on the older computer also fails.  The claim is that the reason is that it's not internet connected.  That's false.The same claim (no network connection) is made when trying to activate the product on a different computer.

Hi, When I save FM to XML with extendscript, I see errors in the console which are not available in the AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\15\consfile.txt Please find an example issue attached. do you see a way to get this errors with extendscript ? thanks.

Hi All, I have an interesting EDD issue that I am trying to solve. Here is a screenshot of my document and structure. The requirement is to have the range1, range2, and child3 elements on the same line (in the same paragraph). To achieve that, my EDD has the yellow elements defined as text ranges. And it works.   However, here is the mystery. While I can apply character formatting to each of the text ranges, I can't figure out how to affect the paragraph where all three text ranges sit. It defaults to Body, but I can't figure out how to access the paragraph in the EDD. For example, this rule doesn't do anything:     And I guess that makes sense, since I had to define the child2 element as a text range. I am thinking that the paragraph where all three text ranges sit is unreachable in the EDD. Anyone know for sure? Thanks.  

Hi , I have been successfully working on shared FM documents saved in Sharepoint. If I tried to open a document that somone else was using  I got a warning and could either open a read-only file or reset the file lock if I was sure that no one else was using that file. That safety net seems to have disappeared and now my colleague and I can edit the same file without realising it. Unlike MS products in Sharepoint, the changes made by multiple users are then saved as separate documents. Can anyone assist?Many thanksKeli
