I have a series of paragraph styles and character styles. When i go to create a new text frame, it defaults to a specific paragraph AND character style. I don't know why it started doing this but I want the default characters style to be "none." How do i do that?
Hi all,Today, I needed to run InDesign 2024 on my Mac, and no matter what I tried, it would always 'hang' during launch (showing a 'what's new screen' and giving me the spinning beach ball). Resetting prefs and all that did not help.I managed to get past the problem by temporarily disconnecting my network (I am on Wifi, so I just turned off the Wifi for a minute), then launching InDesign 2024, and then re-activating my Wifi connection.I suspect that InDesign has some deadlock issue when it is trying to reach out to Adobe's welcome screen servers. Any which way - hope this helps!
In a series of documents that I'm working on, there are short boilerplate paragraphs, which are separate InDesign files that are linked and embedded as anchored objects in the text. Everything seems to work as expected, except that there are large spaces (gaps) in the spacing between whenever one of these boilerplates is followed by regular text. These gaps are indicated in the image below by the magenta (pink) arrows on either side. I've been trying to determine what is affecting/controlling these gaps, because I want to make them smaller. I have eliminated the following:The spacing is not due to text wrap (text wrap is set to zero). (The spacing between boilerplates is controlled by the text wrap, usually 0.125 inches. But I've set the final boilerplate text wrap to zero to reduce the space, but that is not working to reduce the space as desired.)It is not due to the paragraph "Space before" or "Space after" settings, both of which are zero.It is not due to the
I've created a master page but it isn't appearing on the page when I exit master pages
Here we have a map of locations, each numbered. The following page will include the name of the locations. This map gets updated regularly with new locations, and subsequebtly, the list of locations regularly gets updated too. So for example, if a new location is added which needs to be 'number 1', I'd have to change the order of all the numbers on the map and all the locations on the list, which is a bit of an ordeal.I'm wondering if there's a function/method within any of the adobe apps of achieving this job in a simpler more automated way i.e. making each amendment non-manually? These designs will need to be printed out, so I'm thinking InDesign is the best application for this, though feel free to correct me on this.
I've automated the RH of long documents by putting a user-entry box on the pasteboard of the master page. User enters title, lesson number, anything else. This single point of entry gets picked up and placed via text variables. Standard stuff. I like to pick up from this source in case the title needs to get shortened in RHs. Designer has a new sort of "breadcrumbs" design for the RH. I made a custom font for the glyphs. Now, how to automate. It's a different strategy from regular pickup RH text variables. I could, for example, make my custom font so that the "Off Day" (circle number) is a lowercase letter, then define the uppercase as the "On Day" pill. Then they can be changed by changing char style. But I'm not sure if this can be triggered by a text variable, or grep, or a nested style. I have literally thousands of pages to do this on, so it really needs to be a lightweight, elegant solution. Since I have fellow production colleagues and InCopy editors, having to r
Pretty self-explanatory, I want to copy an element (text box, if that matters) and paste it in place on every page in my indesign document. Does anyone know how this is done?
Hi Steven Wareham. Are you here?https://github.com/stevenwareham/numberAdjuster/blob/master/number_adjuster_1_2.jsx This script is mainly for catalogs, and can do calculations for all numbers in a selection. At this point the numbers are sorted by size. But now that I have an index, the size order of these numbers is disrupted.Such as:Because of the page count adjustment, the page numbers have been reduced by 1 page from 119.This reduces all page numbers greater than 119 by 1.And these pages may be distributed throughout the text box, they are unordered. So, the request is to add another condition, something like this: \d+>119Thank you very much.
I would have inserted before b1 to become the new b1.I had no choice but to insert it after a1 and then adjust the content.
Why isn't the paragraph shading allowing me to go any lower??
Any suggestions on why a PDF exported from InDesign 2025 shows "Adobe InDesign 20.3 (Macintosh)" as the Author when viewd in Acrobat, even after editing the File Info in InDesign? I tried updating the Author in Adobe Acrobat as well but no luck. <Title renamed by MOD>
Hello, I am having some problems with paragraph styles (when I export to html or epub) where I use grep style. To convert grep styles to local character styleshttp://in-tools.com/products/scripts/I use (Apply Nested Style). But here, my extra underlined words on the paragraph are not visible.Does anyone know another solution? Thanks in advance for your help.
One of my clients is a book publisher. The editor annotates the PDF book layout, then returns the PDF to me to make the edits. She knows how to properly use Acrobat editing tools and is consistent in her usage. For the most part, our process works great. However, one weird and aggravating thing happens multiple times in almost every book we work on. When the Acrobat edits are imported into InDesign, some number of the "insert" edits will come in as "Accept" while others come in as "Resolve." The editor is using the same tool in Acrobat for all the inserts she marks. We've talked this over, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason why InDesign would import some inserts as "Accept" and others as "Resolve." The edits flagged as "Resolve" do not show up with easy-to-spot blue symbols in the InDesign document, the way the ones with "Accept" show up. Because of this, I have to closely follow every PDF I work with as I make corrections so that I have a visual of the page/para/line
Hi,I'm editing a book containing four chapters (individual documents) and an introduction which includes a table of contents. The ToC displays the contents by looking at the heading styles of the four chapters as required no problems - 1234.but looking at the numbers of the chapter headings i get 1567.When i go to the chapters, chapter 1 is fine but chapter two heading style shows as "5" not two and the subsequent chapters follow on from that. if i remove the ToC, chapter two heading number reverts to 1.Its like the heading in chapter two is getting its number from the end of the ToC and not chapter one as it should.I've tried various fixes, used a different style for the ToC entries, re-applied styles, checked section breaks etc. Can't for the life of me get to he root of the problem.Help appreciated.thanks.
How do I stop this annoying overlay from appearing in my document?
Heya,So I'm using a document, and when I align the text, a thick blue line will appear to the left of the text. The line will only disappear if the text is left-aligned. I would like to get rid of the line, but I'm not sure how.

I have dynamic spelling and autocorrect checkboxes checked under: EDIT> SPELLING> I have gone into EDIT> PREFERENCES> SPELLING> and checked all check boxes under Find and Enable Dynamic Spelling. Also EDIT> PREFERENCES> AUTOCORRECT I have enabled Autocorrect and selected my Language as English:UK.My only concern is that under EDIT> PREFERENCES> DICTIONARY where I have nominated English: UK the link is pointing nowhere. I've been searching for over an hour now, and really need some help. I can't continue with this project until I can get the Autocorrect and Dynamic spelling functioning.Any suggestions? Thank you!!
Hello Community, I was wonderign if somebody could elaborate on the difference between InDesign and InDesign Pro, and I can't seem to find anything on it. This would be for Teams or Enterprise, not individual.
I no longer get a prompt when I delete a page: there is content within the page?It seems one day, I pressed the Alt key and then clicked the delete button, and I won't be prompted later.Where do I recover it?
Hi everyone, I recently upgraded from a MacBook Pro M2 Max to the new MacBook Pro M4 and installed all the latest software updates. While everything worked perfectly on my previous device, I’ve encountered an issue with InDesign (version 20.0.1) on the new MacBook. Whenever I select an object (e.g., text, frames, etc.) to edit it, the object shifts slightly. This behavior only occurs on the new MacBook Pro M4 and not on my previous device, even though both are running the same version of InDesign and software. Additionally, Sequoia 15.1.1 is installed on my system, but it has never caused issues in the past. Has anyone else experienced this issue, or is this a known bug? Are there any solutions or workarounds to address this problem? Thank you in advance for your help!
While making a final proof of my book, I encountered a big problem using Indesign Spell Check. It highlighted a word ("throughout"), and I clicked on the highlighted word to insert a hyphen. After pressing the hyphen key, Indesign removed all the text in my document from that point on. A total of 40 chapters vanished in a few seconds. The pages are still visible and even contain the running header and page numbers. Text threading shows no problems, and there are no indications of there being any overset text. Only the last page is still visible. I immediately attempted to use Edit > Undo, but nothing changed. I closed out and exited Indesign and then restarted it. No changes. I tried to find an earlier backup version on my laptop and on the cloud but have been unsuccessful. Has anyone experienced this problem before and found a solution?
Hi, When exporting to an ebook I get this error in Calibre when checking the file. Page Anchor not found : 2Page Anchor in "C:\Users\user\Dropbox\STORY \BOOK Almost a star" is missing: 2 After researching, I have tried many things to correct it however nothing seems to move it. I did see in viewing the ebook, there is no seperation between page 2 and 3 and this continues through the 210 pagesand I am nt sure how to for a page end and new page start. All pages look fine in the orig InD and in the exported PDF file. I will mention the last item in Page 2 is an image, no text follows until the next page. Any suggestions here please? oz
