Whenever I import the XML into FrameMaker, the flow duplicates, why does that happen? How do I solve this?
I am trying to remove the registered symbol from FM TOC, but unable to do that. When I generate TOC, this registered symbol R (big and bold one) appears in the TOC line. Please suggest any idea how to remove it.
I'm a relative FrameMaker newbie. I'm having trouble figuring out how to position graphics on a page (sometimes the seem to align right, sometimes they go to the center). Instinctively, I've used Import/Image to (and "import by reference"). But recently I reviewed a training video from a couple of years ago and the trainer said to use File/Import/File to import a graphic. I'm wondering if there is a difference?
Up to this point, I've been the only one in my group to use FrameMaker and I'm using the 2022 version. I've created all the content and set up the book files. My coworkers want to start editing these files but they're using 2020. Today, one of them tried to open a book file and received an error. They want me to save all the files as 2020 files. I'm urging them to upgrade to 2022 instead, but in the meantime they want me to save the files as 2020 so they can make small edits. I thought I would check here to see if there could be any issues with doing this because I will still have to open the files, generate the TOC, and fix any issues with the book or files, etc. Then I'll have to remember to keep saving them as 2020 files. It seems like the best approach would be for everyone to upgrade to 2022.
I am using FM2020, with structured documents (DITA 1.3).When I generate a PDF (i.e. using the Publish feature, which uses the STS file I have generated), all of the PDFs always show the contents of the PDF's Title field/metadata in the Title bar, rather than displaying the PDF's filename.I can manually fix this issue via two different approaches:Open the PDF in Acrobat, go to File > Properties, select the Initial View tab, and in the Window Options sub-panel, select "File Name" for the Show fieldAlternatively, open the PDF in Acrobat, go to File > Properties, select the Description tab, and clear the contents of the Title fieldHowever, what I am looking for is an automatic solution, i.e. something I can set within Framemaker, so that I do not need to perform this step manually afterwards.I have looked in the Publish Settings dialog (i.e. editing the STS file) and could not find any options that appear to control this behaviour. I have also looked in the Job Options file (i.e. PDF
After I publish a PDF file from FrameMaker and view the output an error message occurs. "An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem." I have tried to publish to PDF several times and the result is the same. How to I correctly publish to PDF with the entire document appearing correctly?
Our product manuals are in self-contained folders, e.g.Product Name- Common Images- Manual A - Content Documents - Images- Manual B - Content Documents - Images These are stored on the network. However, because the network is accessed via VPN (working remotely), it is very slow. To get around this, the whole folder is copied to the local pc and worked on, then the whole folder is copied back to the network. However, we find that any images inserted (by reference) are using the absolute path, e.g. when the folders are copied to the local pc, images point to the images on the network. When the folders are copied back to the network, any images inserted while working on the document locally (inserted by reference from the local "images" folder) are still pointing to the local images. Is there a way to resolve this so FM uses the relative path, e.g. Images used in Manual A will use the relative path \images\ or ..\Common Images\, rather than the absolute p
FrameMaker was crashing when I used "Publish" with a PDF output or "Save as PDF..." Using the "Print" dialog with output to the Adobe PDF printer or postscript worked just fine. Maybe my experience will help someone else who is dealing with mysterious Publish crashes. The problem was an image where I had replaced a TIFF with a PNG by changing the object properties to point to the new file. Apparently this is a bad idea. FM kept a TIFF facet after the image was replaced, and the PDF engine in the Publish module is rather brittle when it encouters this. My lesson: When replacing an image with an image of a different file type, don't just change the file path/name using the Object Properties. Instead, delete the image from the document then insert the new image from scratch. I was using the Publish PDF engine because I had a couple of PNGs with transparency which I wanted to preserve. Publish can deal with transparency in FM, but Distiller (in all of its forms) cannot.
Hello, Yet ANOTHER thing that is so simple in Word yet seemingly impossible in FrameMaker. I want to put a hyperlinks in my files in my book that, when clicked on, will open a pdf file in an adjacent folder. For instance: I have a chapter where I list the manuals for indivdual parts on the machine that I'm writing about. So, say I want to link to the power supply instruction sheet. I want to be able to have the phrase "Power Supply" be a hyperlink, that when clicked, will open a folder that's adjacent to the FrameMaker files. This is what my superiors are telling me is needed in our manuals. The trainer I had for this program assured me that it's doable, but we didn't get around to covering it. There is nothing covering this anywhere in these discussions, at least not one that tells specific commands on how to make it happen. There are some discussions that make reference to commands that I can't find in any of my menus, so I'm completely lost. The FrameMaker ma
We are currently adding additional footnote references in FM tables. However, they do not automatically update when new footnotes are added. This causes a great deal of confusion regarding which reference is attached to a certain footnote. For example, we add a footnote, then add references/link to that specific footnote in other areas of the table. However, when subsequent changes (new footnotes added, etc.) are made the footnotes are not updated. Please advise -
Hi,I am using FrameMaker 17.0.0 version and struggling with the save as pdf option. Whenever, I tried to save as pdf, it throws out an error: "FraeMaker could not find Adobe PDF printer instance, which must be installed to execute Save as PDF command"When I go for addition of "adobe print to pdf printer", i don't see that in my printer list (using an existing port in add printer setup). Any suggestion or solution for this, please? Thanks,
Hii would like to install the FM publishing server version 2019 realease on our WS 2012 R2.Where could we download this 2019 release? regardsRichard
Hello. I have a document in which FM is not wrapping words at the end of lines:Note that the first line has broken the word "Transfer" in two, without a hyphen, when it should have wrapped that entire word to the next line. It is also breaking cross-references; see line 2. I have played around with the pagination and hyphenation options to no avail. Chanig the line alignment is no help either; the sentence as shown above is "justified" but the same thing happens when I set it to "left." Setting the alignment to "centered" has a very comical looking result, but the topmost line is still broken mid-word. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance,Bill
Hello all, I've been tasked with converting a 20-year-old aviation training manual PDF file back into Frame. The original Frame files are long gone to FrameMaker heaven! The Heading 1 & Heading 2 tags were set to variables in the header and the footers with the manual title and company name are also set to variables. So far, my only solution is to CTRL+A the PDF into my template and strip the document with find/replace and RegEx to strip the spaces. Then I use Copy Special/Paragraph Format to retag.I can get the job done but I want to ask the pros if there’s a better way.Rick, is there a script for this?Happy Easter to all that celebrate!Regards,Sam
When I edit text and the zoom level is 160% or greater, the display fails to update properly and any text which has shifted is overprinted. I can refresh the display, of course, with CTRL+L or by scrolling, but making complex edits is nearly impossible. It's fine at lower zoom levels. Unfortunately, for the time being, I must use high zoom levels in FM due to an eye injury. Here's what it looks like: Changing the font and using displays with different resolutions haven't helped. I've played with the DPI compatibility settings (by right-clicking on the FM executable) to no avail. Is there anything else I can try? Graphics: Nvidia RTX A2000 laptop GPU.FM version 17.0.1.305.
I have clicked on View-Reference Page and scrolled to the page that pertains to the formatting of the Table of Contents. I make my changes..(Bolded, added a tab, etc). I click on View-Body Page to return to the Table of Contents of the book. I save the work and the click Apply Update to Book. The Table of Contents does not change to what is on the reference page. I have no experience with scripting or the coding that is on the Reference Page. How do I get the changes I made on the Reference Page work?Thank you.
Hello. I am trying to import a cross reference format from one chapter to many. First I go to the book and select all the chapters that I want to receive the format. Then I go to the import feature and deselect all but "Cross reference formats." At that point I choose "Current document" as the source. When I hit the Import button the program gives a little blip as if it's doing something, but when it's finished I find that the cross reference format is still not imported into any of the chapters. What am I missing here? TIA,Bill
Hello, looking for a little advice! I understand this is probably a limitation of framemaker but hoping maybe someone else has dealt with something like this or has an idea that I am not thinking of.Per the customer’s format: Table titles end with a period and when a table rolls to another page the period appears at the end of Continued. The inserted variable is showing as a character space which isn’t what we want. Is there another way to close this space (see red arrow below)? (And this isn’t something that we can suggest to the customer to change their style and location of the period or to nix it all together, as we are not in control of the publication just providing supplements to their existing manual. I don’t think they are using FrameMaker to author in either. Currently were are splitting the table and handling the formatting manually.)Thank you all!
My company is looking to migrate from their current Sharepoint site to a new Sharepoint drive; currently all of our images are located on drive #1. If we move those images to drive #2, I expect the links to be broken, but then if I relink one of them through Object Properties, will Framemaker try to relink other missing files from that directory automatically? Or is this something a script might be needed for? Or should we just not do that... we have a pretty fair amount of images connected to a decent number of books.
I do not want to misuse another thread. Matt wrote about new job options in FM 2020: https://community.adobe.com/t5/framemaker/why-are-framemaker-backup-files-not-saved-with-a-different-file-extension/td-p/11825716 My questions are: Do you know why there are json and joboptions file name extensions? And do you have a description of these new job options (at least more than the very short sentence in Distiller)? In particular: Cleaner_Defaults.joboptionsLiquidModePDF.joboptionsMobile.joboptionsPDF20.joboptions What is the difference? Additionally: When I copied some new joboptions files into c:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\ all were accessible in FrameMaker in the Publish pod. But in Distiller I can access only these two: Cleaner_Defaults.joboptionsMobile.joboptions These two do not appear in Distiller: LiquidModePDF.joboptionsPDF20.joboptions
When I click email link in pdf document it opens blank page in browser instead in g mail!Any idea how to solve it!
I've never done much with ExtendScript and am trying to get a little bit familiar with it. Assuming I have a paragraph object, how can I get the x, y location of the beginning of the paragraph? Thanks,Nick
Trying to study for a certification using a practice exam which I've used many times. For some reason, I'm getting this webpage when trying to access
I've converted a 60,000+ manuscript from a plain text editor to FrameMaker. In the plain text document both the opening and closing quotation marks (around dialogue) use the " (double quotes). How can I convert them into the appropriate “ (smart opening quotation) and ” (smart closing quotation) respectively? Straight Quotes are turned off in my Preferences, so the smart quotes appear when I manually type them in the FM document (needless to say I'm not keen on doing this manually.)
Framemaker 17.0.2.431, structured.Source .fm files contain multiple hyperlinks, cross-references and hotspots. All are functional within Framemaker. However, when the book is output to PDF (using 'Save as PDF..') all the hotspots in the PDF lose linking functionality. All hyperlinks and cross-references in the PDF remain functional. Some notes.....Acrobat Reader recognises the hotspots (clickable 'pointing hand' mouseovers), but the reader (me) is not taken to the destination, sadly. All the hotspots were applied to text frames in the .fm files and reside in the master pages. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide with this issue.
