Questions

Either because of my novice-level of FM knowledge or the limitations of FM itself (I'm probably too much of a novice to know the difference yet), there are things my company would very much like to automate in assembling data and then formatting and publishing books for print and web. I/we have the master pages/styles and that covered; we're not looking for a designer, more like we want to be able to string together specific actions in specific situations (i.e., "when a bulleted list is encountered, substitute the bullet points with square glyph, apply styles 1, 2, and 3"). So, kind of like what I'd do with making a Nested Style in ID and then an Action using the nested style, but with a functionality where it is automatically applied when importing formats. Does that make sense? Is this something we should/need to hire a freelancer/contractor for? And if so, could anyone recommend a good way to find one? Thanks.

Dear Friends and experts, Has anyone of you ever tried to find something programmatically in a text selection (aka text range)? The Find method works from a starting point (Text Location) towards the end of a document. When I select a part of the document and issue the search, it obviously starts just after the selection... oTR = oDoc.TextSelection; oFindParms = GetFindParameters (..); oTR1 = oDoc.Find(oTR.beg, oFindParms); Even if the searched item is within the selection, the resulting oTR1 is behind the selction. I have no idea how to do a search within the selection.

Hello, I need to have latest JQuery support in HTML help files

The Extendscript method doc.DeleteUndefinedAttribute and the equivalent FDK F_ApiDeleteUndefinedAttribute are not available for a book. There appears to be no other way to delete an undefined attribute or even a normal attribute for that matter. They are available for a document, as discussed in Delete an attribute. I have used the nomenclature ele.Attributes = changedAttributes a lot. It appears that the Extendscript implementation just goes through and updates any attributes with changed values. It does not remove any, should changedAttributes be one less. 😉 .pop() also appears to be ignored for attributes, in that the attributes length says the same. Am I missing something easy here? Jon

I need to have FrameMaker search for at text string like this: USB-C i<XREF>But FrameMaker refuses to do so. I expect it has something to do with it resembling code... or something.Can anything be done? How do i make FrameMaker do a search for this string and make it find it?

Hello all, I will be using unstructured FrameMaker 15.0.6.956 for the project below. I am working on a document in Word that I will be moving to FrameMaker a little later in the process. (The original doc is in Word and there are multiple writers who are still working in the Word version using Master Docs.) The document is an engineering textbook that uses several hundred equations, for which MathType is used in the Word version. I will be moving it to FrameMaker for the ease of formatting, indexing, styles, cross-references, etc. I have never used the MathML Equation feature in FrameMaker, but I see that it seems very similar to MathType--a kind of MathType for FrameMaker, maybe? Anyway, I am wondering if MathType will be importable into the FrameMaker doc. It doesn't seem to be copy/pastable, and I'm concerned that I may need to recreate every equation in the Frame version. Thank you! Nina

I have to admit I have never understood the behavior of pagination controls in FM. For example, in the book I am working on, when I say not to change the page count - to control whether the next chapter begins on a right or left page - when I update the book, pages are added. When I assign a master page without a header (i.e. no page number) and update, the default left page (with page number) is tacked on.Advice?

I'm running Framemaker 11 on a Windows 7, 64-bit machine with an i7 processor at 2+ ghz and 8.0 MB RAM.My Frame files, with imported/referenced images, are scrolling extremely slowly. When I say slow, I mean as the page scrolls into view it freezes for 10 - 20 seconds before "catching up" and displaying the page.I have a "background" image on my master pages that contains simple graphics for the top header and some borders to delineate areas of the page. Those backgrounds are imported. Thjese imported files are about 1.1 MB.My remaining images are imported by reference on the various body pages. They are .ai files and are 2.5 - 5 (ish) MB in size.I've been searching for an answer. My deadline is going to pass my by while I wait for pages to load. Please help!

We work in a structured environment in Frame2019. Our writers currently use the draft-comment element to add source references about the content (which may not be the best element for this type of comment?). We want to retain this content for reference from year to year but we do not want it to appear in the final published pdf & epub. Increasingly, we are also using the draft-comment element as a form of communication between the writers, subject matter experts and editor (as an action type comment, e.g., "I added this paragraph, can you validate?") The communication back and forth needs to be visible in Frame, Oxy Web Author and a pdf. This communication back and forth is removed when the issue is resolved and is not maintained in the dita when the content has been finalized.  What we have found is that the comments addressed to the writer, editor or subject matter experts are getting missed because we have so many sources referenced. We publish a pdf for Subj

Dear friends,on https://www.daube.ch/docu/fmaker86.html you find version 0.8 of the script FMfindRepl.As pointed out earlier, it is not possible to have the Replace function in the script itself (I'm no more able to do such complicated things) and hence I had to follow the old principle of divide and conquer:Find functions in the scriptSave/retrieve settings in the scriptReplacement function in the standard FM F/C panel to which the settings are automatically transferred.I hope that the script is still useful with this constraints.Find in book is not yet implemented.Please communicate problems/errors directly to me (klaus, daube.ch)You can test it also in a German FM version - the installation routine and the script adapts to the FM UI language (de, en, fr). I have an account with a company and a personal profile.The company profile has an Creative Cloud subsription while the personal one has the subsription for Framemaker. Now I want to start Framemaker on my PC, yet I can not choose a profile during the startup so it seems to select automatically the company profile and brings up the message that I can only start a test subrsiption for 30 days or end Framemaker.How can I change the profile for Framemaker?

I create many cross-refs in my documents but for these references to be useful they should be in some way enforced on the end-users with their corresponding buttons on the acrobat reader (or other pdf readers). People usually do not know that these buttons do exist. My question is if there is a way to enforce the display of these buttons when creating pdf outputs from an FM project.

In the UI of FM the flow is reported as A That's the cause of my problems reported in this post. → I could recover from this strange situation by Create a new document portrait Import all styles from the existing Copy all contents of flow A to the new doc   But the question remains: how this property can disappear - at least for the script.

I am creating a service manual for a product. I want the user to click on the 3D view to exploded it and then click on the part to find more detailed information about the part. Following the instructions on page 386 of the Adobe Framemaker User Guide I am getting the following dialog window: "The document does not have a multimedia or 3D object for adding links." Please let me know any additional information needed to help solve this issues. Thank you.

Hi all!In my current work, I use unstructured FrameMaker. Of course, I know that the developer's site has a document with a complete description of the program («Using Adobe FrameMaker»).I have never worked with structured documents and the manufacturer's tutorial is difficult for me to understand.Can anyone recommend a Structured FrameMaker tutorial for a beginner (for a quick start)? Thanks!Igor

This is baffling me. I have several tables in the book I'm working on, and most of them are fine. There are, however, a handful which either had no outer "bottom" rule  at all, or it was present when viewing the FM file, but saving, printing, or publishing as PDF results in those rules disappearing. I used Custom Cell Ruling and Applied Ruling style "From Table" and the frame rule appeared on screen, but still won't show up in the print PDF. Any ideas?

We use Structured FrameMaker with a custom EDD (no DITA). All our documents are in .fm format (not XML). We produce all our materials to PDF, which has been working great and we don't want to change any of that. Some of our content is also made available via our LMS. To retain the formatting, the content is rekeyed in the LMS platform in plain ("simple") HTML format.  For example, the following content in FrameMaker:is rekeyed in the LMS in HTML:We're investigating whether it is posible to export the content from FM into "simple" HTML so that we can copy and paste the raw HTML into our LMS. We tried using the Basic HTML option from the Publish pod, but found that it contained a lot more than we need and would require a lot of "clearn-up" for it to be usable for our purpose. Any suggestions from the community how we could achieve a "cleaner" HTML output without going down the XML/DITA route?

Back in 2016, Thomas Aldous did a series of webinars on moving unstructured FM content to XML. The links provided on his site (http://tmaldous.com/2016/02/14/7-part-e-seminar-series-unstructured-to-xml-framemaker-10-instructional-series/) take me to a meetus.adobeevents.com page that says I have to register to view the recording, but I'm not able to register as "the event is over".   Does anyone know if access to these webinars is still available? I very much want to watch them.

I am importing a Word docx file which has a lot of cross references built using Words book mark feature. According to FrameMakers documentation I should be able to import the text and have FrameMaker convert Words cross references to FrameMaker cross references. But what I get is this mishmash which looks really strange. What am I missing? Does the feature work?FrameMaker 2020 - Word docx 2016

FrameMaker 2020 (16.0.4) + DITA 1.3 + EDDMy client likes using a specific symbol in the menucascade elements. The definition is in the uicontrol element. Working in the EDD, I cannot make the symbol work. I suspect now that the symbol is not in the font used in the book, so I'd have to somehow indicate that the symbol font needs to be included in the document.I've tried pasting from the Windows Character Map as text, rich text, and unicode. When that didn't work, I created a variable with the character code (U+0AE) but that didn't work either.

Not long ago I came across a document that describes all the inner workings of reference pages - structure, syntax, etc. Can't find it again - anyone know about it?

Hi,I am using FrameMaker version 16.04 and am wondering how to change text in a book's master page. Specifically it's ccopyright information that needs to be updated.
