How to Save an InDesign File for Older Versions (IDML) Did you know? InDesign files aren't backward compatible by default - a .indd file saved in InDesign 2024 simply won't open in InDesign CC 2019. But there's a simple workaround: export as IDML. What is IDML?IDML (InDesign Markup Language) is an open, XML-based file format that acts as a universal bridge between InDesign versions. Any version of InDesign from CS4 onwards can open an IDML file - making it the go-to format when collaborating with colleagues or clients on older software. But backward compatibility is only half the story. IDML is also one of the most reliable ways to recover a corrupted InDesign file. Because IDML is XML-based rather than binary, exporting a damaged .indd to IDML and then reopening it often strips out the corruption that's causing crashes, freezes, or "cannot be opened" errors - even when other recovery methods fail. Many InDesign users keep this trick in their back pocket specifically for emergencies, no
Hello everyone,First posting here, so I hope it works.I have drawn a square in InDesign, and want to select one of the corner points to distort it. I assumed the direct selection tool would do this, but it is completely unable to select any of the points. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks
Hello everyone,On a two-page spread, I have drawn text frames, two per page. As I want to use this layout for most of my pages, I have copied the spread in the Parent Pages part of the Pages panel, thus creating a new spread of Parent Pages. Then I inserted two new pages based on that recent new spread, but the new pages in question show my four text frames with dotted lines only, and I cannot click into them to start typing text. When I go back to their Parent Pages, the text frames are dotted lines as well, but the borders of the text frames become solid/normal when I hover over them with the black arrow, I can select them and type in them. In the regular pages based on those Parent Pages, I cannot select them, they remain just dotted.I must have done something wrong… Advice will be very much appreciated, thanks in advance.
Hello,I am a professional graphic designer and I use Adobe InDesign all day, every day, for client work.Immediately after installing the macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta, InDesign became almost unusable. The problem is intermittent. InDesign can work normally for a while, then suddenly freeze. It seems to happen most often when I am editing text or changing fonts, although I cannot reproduce it consistently. When this happens:Save becomes disabled (greyed out). Save As becomes disabled. Close becomes disabled. I cannot save my work. I cannot close the document. The only solution is to Force Quit InDesign, which causes me to lose hours of work. This happens with multiple InDesign documents, not just one file.I have already:Updated InDesign to the latest version. Tested a previous version of InDesign. Restarted my Mac many times. The issue started immediately after installing the macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta.Has anyone else experienced this issue? Can Adobe confirm whether this is a known
macOS 27 Golden Gate Beta…Find/Change doesn’t show up…I know I’m not supposed to be working with a beta OS, but here I am… I just thought it might be useful for some people to know…
Using Windows 11, current version of InDesign.Trying to complete the digital/ebook version of a book.First, I’m not new at this. Been writing and doing my own publishing for 37 years. I have never had this particular glitch before. No matter what I do, all my centered graphics are left-aligned when exported to epub. The exact same file does fine in both 8x10 and 6x9 print versions, using all the same graphics and settings.Object styles are used for all graphics.I’ve tried using other graphics I’ve used many times before with no problems, and graphics I’ve never used. Same result.I’ve tried resetting the default graphics style, even creating a new one.I’ve tried using a new template, both my own, and ones offered in ID panel.I’ve closed ID and reopened. I’ve rebooted my computer.I’ve checked for updates on PC and in Adobe CC.I’ve rolled back InDesign to previous version (as suggested repeatedly on various forums and help sites). This did not change the problem. Graphics are still left-al
Hey gang,I’ve been meaning to ask this question for 26+ years: In Preferences > Advanced Type > Character Settings… why are Superscript and Subscript size settings set to 58.3% ? Is that size arbitrary? Is there any typesetting history behind that oddly-specific size choice?
Hi all,I'm starting on complicated catalog with over 3,000 products and multiple sections/styles. I can see that this will be beyond InDesign's native data merge. What do you think is the best option for a data merge plugin and why? Thanks!
For thousands of products with multiple sections and styles, the thing that breaks native Data Merge usually isn't the record count — it's that Data Merge binds one template to one dataset. The moment your product families need genuinely different layouts, you end up maintaining several merge documents and stitching the output together, which is where the time actually goes. Two questions that would change my answer:Do your "sections/styles" differ in layout (different frame arrangements per family) or only in styling (same structure, different paragraph/object styles)? The first needs a different approach entirely; the second is often solvable with object styles and nested styles alone. Are your product images consistently named and all present? Missing or inconsistently named assets cause more failed catalog merges than any layout issue — worth auditing the source file before choosing any tool.On the tooling itself, roughly in order of investment: scripting the merge yourself if you h
Hi everyone. I recently worked on a publishing project as a designer using InDesign, alongside an editor using InCopy, with Google Drive serving as the cloud storage for the files. Everything was under control until the day before printing, when one of the InCopy assignments was overwritten by a version from two weeks prior. Since I don't handle the text content, I never touched that assignment; the editor had made last-minute corrections but certainly hadn't reverted it to such an old state. Does anyone have any idea what might have happened? After a thorough check, the editor is certain the issue was limited to that specific assignment, and my InDesign file remained unaffected. Do you think it’s possible that Google Drive (which backs up various versions of every file) might have automatically restored an old backup? Ciao a tutti. Ho recentemente lavorato a un progetto editoriale come designer utilizzando indesign, assieme a un redattore che ha usato incopy, e usando Google Drive com
Machine is a Zenbook Duo (Windows 11). When exporting a relatively small (five page) document to PDF, InDesign hangs and never recovers.Workaround is to tick the “Create separate PDF files” checkbox and combine the pages afterwards. Is this a known bug or am I doing something wrong? I’ve used InDesign for years and have never before seen this behavior.
Hello all,Today I have two questions to which I haven’t found an answer by myself:1. My usual layout has one text frame filling the whole page, but divided in two columns. When I insert a footnote, say in the left-hand column, I want its text to remain in that same column, and not spill over under the right-and column as if I had given a Span command.I have seen in questions already asked in this forum that some users have their footnotes behave natively just like I would want mine to behave, but I haven’t so far found a way to achieve that result.I attach a screen capture, as a picture speaks a thousand words, or so they say...2. is it possible to widen the space between the short separating line above the footnote, and that footnote itself? I have tried Space Before in the Footnote Paragraph Style I have created, but it doesn’t seem to work. Many thanks to you all for your help.Dominique
Since the last Adobe InDesign update, my zoom shortcut (cmd + Shift + .) no longer works, while the zoom shortcut does. This is wasting my design time. Could someone please help me solve this problem? I'm still a beginner with the Adobe suite and I've tried to solve it myself by searching online and on forums, but I haven't been able to. Thank you for your help.
Hi everyone,I’ve brought this up once before, but the topic didn’t really gain traction, so I’d like to revisit it — especially from the perspective of a publishing house that’s been working in print production for many years. For a long time, our editorial workflow was based on the PlanSystem editorial system, which we adopted after moving away from WoodWing. This setup allowed us to manage the layout planning of magazines and documents in a centralized way. However, to maintain this workflow, we’ve actually held off upgrading to the latest versions of Adobe Creative Cloud. To this day, I haven’t found a simple way in InDesign (or elsewhere in the Adobe suite) to assemble and organize multiple documents into a coherent, magazine-style layout — where you can view the entire issue in sequential order and rearrange pages organically on the fly. We need to be able to manage editorial content together with incoming ads from clients (as PDFs) and make layout decisions interactively.Ideally, I
I thought it was good to share this here as well: I have a script that adds autosave and backup versions* to InDesign. This script lets you set Auto save in InDesign (standard: every 8 minutes, but you can change that) and maintains five backup versions (you can also change that).Drop it into Adobe InDesign/Script/startup scripts and it will add a new menu in the File menu (last item) that lets you switch this function on and off.Want to change the minutes or the number of backups? Open it in an editor and change these lines to what you want:// =====================================================================// CONFIGURATION// =====================================================================var AUTO_SAVE_MINUTES = 8;var MAX_BACKUPS = 5;*BEWARE: the backups are only created on AUTOSAVE and are removed when you close the document (otherwise your HD would fill up) so it is NOT for versioning ;-)Download for free!https://1drv.ms/u/c/916857b766432d35/IQC5_T-d0N-WSLs0A69hkSYrAaFGsx02
When having a file open in InDesign 2024 on my Macbook Pro (Sonoma 14.2.1 OS), close the lid, plug into my LG UltraFine external monitor and wake the computer up, the InDesign window is still open and all the tool bars are visible and working, but the area where the artwork is becomes black/blank and I can't see the work. I can see the bounding boxes if I select all, but no image or text. The window is entirely blank. The same thing happens if I'm working on my LG monitor, unplug the display and then open the Macbook to work. I always have my Macbook closed when plugged into the LG display and use both an external keyboard and trackpad. The solution is to always save, quit InDesign and reopen. If I go through that it works again. Is it a bug with Apple? Is it a bug with Adobe? My LG firmware, OS and Adobe InDesign are all updated to the latest versions.
Bonjour!
Veuillez contacter votre administrateur".
InDesign is going mad. I have to force quit several times a day. On the pointer tool I select the zoom tool from a keyboard short cut. It will hold onto the zoom tool. I size a text box on a page and the pointer keeps the size co-ordinates and not go back to the pointer. Some times it wont let me do an undo (command z). Sometimes a random box from a menu (e.g. Layer options) I haven’t used, appears in the screen. When any of the above starts happening I know it’s time to force quit. It may be in my mind but does this have to do with upgrade to Tahoe. I have reset InDesign preferences. 2021 Macbook pro Tahoe 26.5.2 Indesign 2026 21.5. - HELP.
I need to distinguish between the following two situations. The essence is to distinguish whether it is a single line or multiple lines. The first option: select 1row (one or more columns).Second option: Select 2 rows (1 or more columns).
How can I export full bleed images to reflowable epub? My exported images got a thick white border around on Kindle Previewer.
I have been trying to figure this out for several days now. I’m using 2025 InDesign on a Mac. I have one merge file with images that works just fine and I use it all the time. I’m trying to set up a separate merge file with a lot more images. I fixed several errors that were causing me to get the “missing image” error. Despite all that, I now get no errors but a merge file with text and blank boxes where the images should be. I have noticed one other difference between the merge file that works and the one that doesn’t: In the working one, my image frame has the correct column name <<logo>> inside the frame where the image should be, but the one not working does not display any text. Would be so grateful for a solution! And just to cover my bases, yes the column has an @ sign, and yes, I tried putting the spreadsheet in the same folder as the images and using the image file name, which got me the same result: No errors, but the frames are still blank after merge. I even chec
