P: Completely broken Hand tool (PS24.5) Hand Tool Sticking, sticky, not seeing mouse-up

I was disappointed that there were so many bugs that were not fixed in 24.5, but I was still trying to give it a shot.

However, this bug is pretty serious. Really...

Please see the video I attached.
If you watch the video, you will see that I am shaking the screen.
I'm not using a hand tool, it should release automatically, but that thing is sticky.

To release this sticky, pinned handtool, you'll need to make one more unconditional click.

Here's how I've organized them for your reference.

< What I can be sure of >

1. Window10 (Tested a total of 14 PCs)
2. Use WacomTablet
3. Not related to preferences at all (Especially not related to Spring loaded, Flick panning stuff things)
4. I've tried all the known Photoshop troubleshooting methods and no improvement.
5. Even reinstalling Windows does the same thing
6. Only in 24.5 does this bug occur with certainty. I can't reproduce it at all in earlier versions.

1. Mac OS not tested
2. I couldn't even test if it was a GPU company difference. I and my team all use NVIDIA

And while there are a few threads pointing this out, there doesn't seem to be a proper plan to fix it.

If this is not fixed in 24.6, 24.6 will be equally unusable as 24.5.

Well, shoot.   I was hoping that might help narrow things down.  Thank you for checking!

I'm still running into issues with Space bar+LMB (panning), as well as CTRL+ Space bar+LMB (scrubby zoom) getting stuck and not releasing on Windows 10 and PS 25.3.1. I can't believe this has been going on for this long. 

The problem started in 24.2 for me personally. I've been stuck on version 24.1.1 because this is a workflow killer for me.

So that's 13 updates and not resolved. There's something not quite right about paying for a subscription for a 7+ months  and not being able to use any of the versions during that time. .

Over the past few years, updating Photoshop has become a source of anxiety for me because I've gotten to the point of assuming everytime I update there is going to be some new workflow killing bug introduced.

I get it, when new features are introduced there are bound to be some hiccups. What I don't get is how we can go through 13 updates and still have the same problems.

Adobe rationalized switching to a subscription service around the idea that we'll get more frequent updates to the latest features on a regular basis. What good is that pitch if your users can't update because there are consistent workflow crippling bugs being introduced at every turn.

I also get that bug fixing isn't sexy and won't garner more subscriptions, we all must have the shiny new features. But at what cost. I've completely lost faith in Adobe during these Creative Cloud years which is a real bummer. I miss CS days.

Here's a little bit of evidence for you.

I was using PS 25.3.1 on my laptop system where I could just occasionally get the sticky hand using a mouse. I was wondering if changing timings might affect things, so for this session I made an RDP connection to the laptop (on a gigabit wired network) to see what happens.

It seems a bit easier to reproduce the issue in this mode. The log I caught should show me opening a JPG file, then two click and drag with a mouse, holding still while I release the button. All works fine here.

Onj the third click and drag I kept the mouse moving as I lifted the button, and bingo, a sticky hand tool. I end the dragging with the ESC key.

Log below for you. Is this a convenient way to submit one, or would you prefer me to do something else?

Unfortunately, that log is capturing a set of information that we do not believe applies to the lost mouse-up. It looks like high-level communications events with plugins.

The logs we are interested in are from the Event Logger, which must be enabled using configuration files setting and activation using an enabled menu command, as documented earlier in this thread, and here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-event-logger.html

Because the Event Logs logs are so verbose, when the stuck mouise-up happens, you should pause for about 5 seconds so that the time stamps in the log file show exactly where the issue happened, and then stop the logger.

Be advised that we are working internally on an updated Event Logger which has a lot more information which may be helpful to us. I'll let folks know when it is enabled in a beta or general release.

Ah, I had followed the instructions for logging without my brain on. I think they are a bit misleading now your logging is in a GA release - I had my settings in the Beta folder.

So with settings in the standard release folder I see a pslog file, which seems to be what you need.

Here's a test again: one click-and-drag releasing when still; then one releasing while moving the mouse and getting the sticky hand

@CJButler I noticed something a week or so ago that I wondered would be helpful and your comment about plugins made me think of it.

About a week ago I was experiencing the sticky hand tool in 25.3.1, and I jumped to beta hoping to reproduce it and catch it with the event logger to send it on.  I wasn't able to reproduce this in beta, but I was able to in 25.3.1.  I swapped back and forth several times with the same results each time. 

I don't have any plugins enabled in beta, and I wondered if that had something to do with it.  When I have time, I'm going to try enabling some plugins in beta to see what happens, if anything.

Thanks - that's the log file we're looking closely at. I presume you just quit instead of stopping logging? It looks truncated, but the last events were in the Hand Tool and no WM_LBUTTONUP was seen, and so the Track just does TrackContinue until the log file ends. This aligns exactly with the other log files that we've seen.

(I'll ask that folks not post log files in this thread, but link to them in some other accessible location. You can privately PM me that location and I will let you know when I have pulled them down. Thanks.

Thanks - That's certainly something interesting to explore, as one of our early theories was that a plugin was pulling events directly off the OS event queue for some (bad) reason. They are not supposed to do that, of course. But we've seen the behavior happen with no third-party plugins installed.

With my Windows 10 Wacom pen setup, I can reproduce the problem and am providing logs to engineering.
Rarely had my very basic (Microsoft) mouse to show the problem, but have seen it happen once or twice.

My steps are, brush tool, using (hand) Spacebar and ALT for selecting color, switching brushes etc.
However, I have even seeing after just opening files. I use Adobe Bridge frequently, not sure if that is even part of it but thought I would mention it.

Please know we have been working on it.

I've noticed in Gimp they have another way.
You simply don't need to click with the mouse, you just navigate while holding space bar and move the mouse.
I never thought of that before, but I can get used to it pretty fast since you hold space bar anyway in PS.
Wouldn't that be a temporary solution?
To just have a simple option in the settings to activate only-space-bar-navigation. No mouse click needed.
It wouldn't harm anyone who is not affected by the bug.
But give people who are affected the option to work with the latest version.

That lends credence to @ericman2323's conjecture that  people working quickly (and being a little sloppy with it, apparently) run into it most often. Anyone working precisely would likely not see it, regardless of speed, and no engineer (precise to the core!) working carefully would ever be able to reproduce it.


To add some more context on this - unfortunately I also find that this makes no difference. In fact, I am able to reliably reproduce the issue with a completely stationary mouse.

Regarding bridge, @Daniel Presedo I do not use bridge at all, so it is happening without it at least for some.

It's not a matter of speed. And it's not a matter of pen. It's easily reproduced with a mouse. Even if you do it very slowly.

It's a good idea to exclude the possibility of Wacom at all. It has nothing to do with it. (I don't even install Wacom drivers, I don't connect them at all, and I can recreate them on my newly formatted PC.)

Same with the mouse. I usually use the Logitech Gpro mouse, but it's not even a problem with the mouse because I don't install Logitech software, and it's reproduced with an old mouse with a polling rate of 125, and a noise-free Bluetooth cheap mouse for 3$ sold on the internet.
This is not a problem with the device.

It's also not plugin-related, as @CJButler mentioned, as both my home PC and work laptop are plugin free.

I thought it could have something to do with multiple displays; my PC has 2 and laptop 3 monitors connected, so I unplugged them all, restarted the computers, but the bug still arised.

Also, if it's anything of interest, I can NOT reproduce this in Lightroom, so it's probably purely PS related. Not using Bridge either.

Other things that DON'T matter:

- Whether you release spacebar before or after releasing the mouse button when using hand tool

- Image size (tried with 1x1px up to 29999x29999px), bit depth (8/16/32bit), color mode (RGB, CMYK, L*A*B...) image type (jpg/png/cr2...)

- Mouse manufacturer or type (wired/wireless). I haven't tried with a PS/2 port ball mouse - maybe that would do the trick.

- Using the software in full screen, windowed mode, or floating window

- Different workspaces (default, animation, photography, 3D...)

- Graphics processor enable/disable, overscroll, flick panning (although flick panning does make it even worse, at least subjectively)

- Forcing vsync on/off

@Andreas Resch The status has not changed. We still don't have an understanding of the root cause. We have one person (Daniel) who can reproduce with a pen and he is working with instrumented builds so that we can try to understand more. So far, he has not been able to reproduce reliably using just a mouse. No one else can reproduce whatever is special about his environment.

Since we don't have an understanding of the root cause, we have no ETA for a fix.

I am still having this problem.  I am really stuck now too.  I can't really downgrade because generative AI is part of my workflow now as is the brush for it.  It is incredible for removing fly away hairs and stuff.  What I did notice is with the beta version this was not really a problem.  I milked the beta version until it turned off.  Now I am on the latest and greatest with this problem using a wacom.  When zoomed in about 50% of the time panning gets stuck.  I can move my pen half an inch off the tablet and it still drags around.  It makes me nuts that this is not resolved.  I am in Utah and could bring my computer to adobe to show them if we could get this resolved.  This has been over a year now.  It makes retouching really hard and frustrating.  Wacom has no idea what is going on.  I have been on chat and sent vidoes in.  I think that this is adobe

Nine months later and still no fix...

I recentely change to a new MacBook and today, after a few days using Photoshop 25.2.0, got stuck on hand tool but, different from the last months (using Photoshop 2022 and 2023), workarounds like reset tool, shift+spacebar or reset preferences on startup dind't solve this — yeah, instead of getting solved, it seems to be getting worst!

And a simple googling show tha are MANY people with this problem for months, so it's a shame that a big company like Adobe, with all that incredible and fancy AI tools can handle a bug that makes a software unusable.

I don't have technical skills to contribute with the troubleshooting, but if this helps, I'm on a M1Pro MacBook using macOS 14.2.1 and working with a Huion H610PRO v2 Pen Tablet. (And again, after upgrading for latest Photoshop, this seems to got worst).

Will now try to restart computer to see if this fix for now, or if the software became a digital useless brick.

A few things:

• We have never seen the lost mouse-up problem on Mac.
• All evidence gathered so far indicates the problem in this thread is a Windows only issue.
• We have not tested (or even seen) a Huion H610PRO v2 Pen Tablet. It is not supported at this time.

My ask to @bagadefente is to remove the tablet from the mix. Disconnect the tablet and remove all installed software (including plugins) associated with the tablet. Then see if you can reproduce.

I reinstalled my Windows and all of my software about a week ago.  I had been using Photoshop 23 to avoid the sticky problem, but now I don't see 23 in the available apps.  Oddly enough, 22 is there.  Anyway I decided to go with the very latest Photoshop release.  25.3.1.  So far I haven't run across the problem.  I suppose it will show up sooner or later though.

Thought I'd add to this forum also, since our studio has been tracking it for a solution for the last year or so. Multiple computers in our studio suffer from this problem and what prompted me to comment was the suggestion that its somewhat related to pen / tablet combinations. Which isnt currently being used by my system.

My current version of PS is 24.4.0, as anything newer than that seems to be even worse. Some system and windows specs below:

Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
Version 22H2
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X 64-Core Processor 2.90 GHz

RAM: 256 GB

GPU: Nvidia RTX 3080

Spyder Elite Screen Colour Calibration

I do actually suspect its something to do with windows, but particulalry affecting PS since I have had similar button down release issues occasionally in other software.
