P: Premiere Pro 24 issue with the GPU on Macbooks Video Preview

This is happening on all of my premiere pro projects. Started when I updated to Premiere 2024. When I look at a video in either source or the timeline, it glitches (see photo). I haven't found anyway to view my footage. The only way to see the real video is by playing the video. This makes it impossible to color correct or colorgrade footage. Please help fix this, it basically is preventing me from editing.

[SOLVED]

I solved it in the following way:

Go to FILE > PROJECT SETTINGS > GENERAL > VIDEO RENDERING AND PLAYBACK > RENDERER and replace the option "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (Metal) - Recommended" with "Mercury Playback Software Only" and click OK.

If it doesn't work, also try this way: Go to PREMIERE > PREFERENCES > MEDIA > At the end, disable the option "Enable hardware accelerated decoding (requires restart)

I had to call Adobe's SAC and they provided support to reach this solu

Hello Alexander,

Thanks for the bug report. Do you have an Intel-based Mac or is it Apple Silicon-based? If it is Intel-based, does this bug report sound similar to your issue? Please let the team know. I hope we can help you soon. Sorry for the problem.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi,

Adobe Premiere Pro community. I see, from all your post on the Adobe Community forum, that you have been experiencing a problem with clips failing to properly preview in the Source Monitor. Clips either go black and white with pixelation blocks or have varying pixelation issues on the preview window. We want to fix this and understand the frustrations you have all been going through. To do so, we first need to be able to reproduce the failure here at Adobe.  Unfortunately, our attempts at re

This isn't something being experienced by others, indicating it is probably something with your machine. Have you set the project acceleration to software only? If that fixes this, then it is a GPU issue.

This has been a huge pain the last couple of days - It's also happening to me. I got a reply on X.com about the GPU glitch
"It is a bug with older Macs with an underpowered iGPU with only 1536MB VRAM. The system requirement is 2 GB. Please upvote this bug report: adobe.ly/4aSg9z4. You may want to transcode to ProRes LT or another format for now"
Hope this helps anyone else

Randomly, over the past few days, my program monitor will display a white and black pattern. The pattern does not remain the same, and will sometimes take on certain aspects of what should be playing. I've attached some photos and a screen recording. Oddly, the pattern did not appear while viewing the playback, but would appear when I would pause playback, which felt backward to me. It also went away while scrubbing.

Version: 24.4.1 Build 2

Computer Info: MacOS, Sonoma 14.5

2019 MacBook Pro

2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9

AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 4 GB

32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Internal SSD with around 250 GB available

Video Format:

Basic MP4, exported from Canva, stock imagery from Pexels, nothing too intensive. Sequence settings are 1080p, 30fps. Copmuter has handled this type of video well before.

Workflow:

Pretty basic. A few motion graphics templates, but the graphical error impacts all video clips.

Steps to reproduce:

I haven't been able to reproduce it consistently. It just sort of randomly occurs.

I've reset my preferences and that didn't work. I did restart my computer and it fixed the error. This a few days ago as well, and was fixed after a restart. My best guess is this is a computer issue, but wanted to post with pictures in case anyone else is having similar issues.

Screen Recording:

(For the record, this error was occuring before I started screen recording)

Over the past three months, I have noticed drastic slowdowns on my 2019 MacBook Pro i9, 15-inch, especially when editing my videos with Premiere Pro. After working for a while, it starts to slow down and the preview screen shows a green screen or a glitched screen instead of my video preview (I have attached some example photos/videos).

I have tried formatting my computer, restoring everything, reinstalling the system, uninstalling and reinstalling Premiere, rolling back to previous versions of Premiere, and disabling all plugins in Premiere, but nothing has worked. Additionally, I have taken my MacBook to Apple centers for diagnostics multiple times, and according to their tests, the computer is perfect, with no anomalies or damage, and everything appears to be functioning perfectly.

I also try to switch in "rendering": "solo software mercury playback engine" when I put that, to edit take me a lot of time, also to expoter like 5 time more to export a little project but export in that wat I see the video well, without any problem.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

Hello @Giuliano37629248uf02,

Thanks for the bug report. I looked at your specs, and your system requirements show that your GPU needs 2GB of VRAM. Your iGPU only has 1536MB of VRAM. That could be at the heart of your issue. [UPDATE 8-5-24: I checked with engineering, and they said the iGPU having 1536MB of VRAM should still work and is not the issue.]

Try transcoding the H.264 and HEVC footage to an editing codec, like ProRes or ProRes LT. You can also try reducing the amount of GPU-accelerated effects. By doing one or both of these things, your workflow should be a lot smoother.

My other advice is to invest in a newer computer. The one you have is now five years old, which is about the time when most editors update hardware to remain current with system requirements.

I hope these ideas help you with this issue. Let the community know how it goes.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks Kevin. I mean is also strange because right now I'm working with my old laptop (Asus) like I bought that 6 years ago and in Premiere working better with this old laptop. Same version of Premiere but working with a much older and less powerful computer and working better, that's why I say it's strange, as if it were a bug. Anyway thanks for reply the question and also I will try to do that, do you know how I can do that you say from Premiere Pro? Thanks 🙏

Hi @Giuliano37629248uf02

Thanks for the reply. You have made an interesting comparison between the two computers. If you could tell me the specs of the PC, that may help me find a solution for you. Knowing more about the media would also help, as would a test with any non-H.264/HEVC media.

Take Care,
Kevin

Hi @Giuliano37629248uf02,

I looked at your screenshots more carefully. It looks like you are experiencing a known bug others are having with that particular Mac and specific formats. You may want to roll back a version until the team finds a fix. You can also try a different format, like ProRes LT. I hope the advice helps.

While long in the tooth, your PC has Quick Sync onboard, so H.264 handling is pretty good, even on these older rigs. I hope to assist you more, so come back with any questions.

Thanks,
Kevin

I'm not a dev, so I'm not sure. I will try to get someone from the team to respond. Sorry about that. I think it's probably a sign that it's time to update your hardware to stay current with everything.

Thanks,
