So I increased the size. After you activate the type tool, look on the tool's option bar, lower left, for "Tool Options." It would help if you post the aerial photo & the map so that we can provide hand-on advice. Absent that, here are some suggestions: 1. Make sure that the resolution of both the photo & map are the same value. The rule of thumb for work on the web is 72px/in and for printing in the 240-300 px/in range. 2. In addition to layer opacity determinant values, there is also the option to change the blending mode on layer1. "Normal" is default. In the drop-down click on the next option, and then you can cycle through the rest of the blending modes with the down-arrow key on the keyboard. 3. You might consider enhancing the trails on the map. Open a blank layer at the top of the stack of layers, and with a black, round or square brush,  trace over the trails to make them stand out. Certainly enhancement with a hue/sauration adjustment layer as mentioned by @jeffarola is in order. However, there are many variables contributing to the disparity that you see on your monitor vs. a print. 1. Have you calibrated your monitor? Most default monitors settings out of the box are too bright. For critical work you may wish  to look into a calibration tool. 2. There is a difference among printers as to the fidelity of the output. I have an Epson printer, and have owned a Lexmark printer, and the prints were not the same, using branded ink in each printer. 3. Do you use ink marketed by the manufacturere of the printer, or, do you used generic ink from other suppliers? 4. Do you use paper that is produced to be compatible with the branded ink? ... Try this: 1. Open the picture file 2. Activate the Eyedropper tool and sample the brown background. This will be your foreground color as seen in the color chip. 3. Use the lasso tool to select the area with the white streaks but leave the gentleman's scalp area as is. Delete the selection  with streaks that you have made by hitting delete on the keyboard 4. Go to Edit menu>Fill selection>Foreground color. 5. Press CTRL+D to get rid of the marching ants outline. 6. Open a blank layer at the top and with the Brush tool paint any void areas with brown -- clean up!! 7. Open another blank layer at the top, and press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+E to merge all the layers---- "a stamp visible layer". 8. Open another blank layer at the top, and activate the clone stamp tool.
