Hi,I created a new book and added one file called FrontMatter.fm. That file has four Reference Pages (Reference, MasterPageMaps, TOC, and IX). The TOC Reference Page has the formatting (styles, tabs, leaaders, etc.) I would like the generated TOC to use, as shown below: I then use Insert > Create TOC to add a generated TOC to the book. In the Set Up Table Of Contents dialog I add the heading styles I want to use and click OK. In the Update Book dialog I leave the defaults and click Update. The generated TOC has 5 Reference Pages (Reference, MasterPageMaps, TOC, IX, and TOC1). The TOC Reference Page looks like the image above (as expected), but the TOC1 Reference Page looks like this: The TOC entries that are created on the Body page of the generated TOC are using the formatting from the TOC1 Reference Page (not the ones from the TOC Reference Page). At one point it was working correctly, so I figure I must have subsequently made some change to the FrontMatter.fm that is

I cannot find a current answer to this question. In any other program, it would be incredibly simple, and it APPEARS to be simple in FrameMaker, but it isn't.I put the cursor at an insertion point:And then I go to Insert/Page Break:Aaaaaand....Nothing happens. How do you insert a page break? I just want the figure text to be immediately below the image, and I can't make that happen either no matter how many gymnastics I do. So my solution is to move the image to the next page! But FrameMaker won't do that either. Can anyone unlock this magical, mystical, mysterious locked box? So many things in FrameMaker seems to be only known and accessible to experts who charge you for the priviledge of unlocking them!
Hi all, I finally upgraded to FrameMaker 2022, and it's incredibly slow. Pages take forever to load, and publishing a 70-page document took almost 20 minutes. Any action I try to take results in 10 or 20 seconds of waiting. There is clearly something wrong. Is there an FAQ/troubleshooting guide available for this? Has anyone else had this problem? UPDATE: We found a workaround by moving everything from the server to Dropbox. This is not ideal, but it's what we have to do. It is very frustrating that FrameMaker now seems unable to pull referenced images from a server. That's kind of central to everything I do at my job!
I am struggling with the ”Save as PDF” function converting regular text into bold style. The weird thing is that this problem is only present in FrameMaker 2020 and later (currently using 17.0.5 on Win 11). Text is not converted into bold with the same process in FrameMaker 2019, which I used on my previous Win 10 work pc, where I also had FM 2022 installed, in order to troubleshoot on the same system with the same settings, fonts etc. However, since FM 2019 can't be installed on Windows 11 systems, I would like to get this working in FM 2022.Any ideas about how to fix the problem would be much appreciated.
I use the API method F_ApiScrollToText and it generates the following error: The file or assembly "NavigationViewOutline, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null" or one of its dependencies could not be found. The system cannot find the file specified. Maybe someone knows where FM uses this lib (some plugin?). the stack is System.IO.FileNotFoundException: The file or assembly "NavigationViewOutline, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null" or one of its dependencies could not be found. I have had this problem several times, and the only way I've been able to solve it is in the Ancored Frame menu:and selecting "page." So here is a graphic with no caption on page 28, because for no reason, the caption has jumped to the next page. I've tried shrinking the graphic to the size of a pea, and there is PLENTY of space on the page for the caption, but it STILL jumps to the next page! And here is the caption on the next page:How do I fix this?
I have a large set of ExtendScript scripts that I run on a large structured FrameMaker book. The scripts run fine with FrameMaker 2019, but some of the processing is incomplete in FrameMaker 2022 (17.0.3; I don't have client authorization to try 17.0.5 yet). For example, all cross-references are not resolved, and all custom master pages are not applied. It seems that FrameMaker doesn't "catch up" with all of the tasks that the scripts are doing. I tried putting some sleep methods in the script to allow FrameMaker to recompose pages, etc., but I don't think ExtendScript is asynchronous. Is it possible to do asynchronous programming with the FDK? Thank you.
Hello, We have a new co-worker, technical writer, who is unable to add a hypertext annotation (Alert). Historically, I have used the steps below with success:1. Place the cursor on a clickable/editable text.2. Insert>Hypertext.3. Change Command drop down to “Alert”4. Type in any info/comment into the hyperlink window.5. Hit "Create" and a green T anchor tag shows up. When the new co-worker uses the same steps above, Framemaker does absolutely nothing once the “Create” button is pressed. I am watching the co-worker's screen and no green/black T anchor tag shows up. Nothing happens. To troubleshoot, I opened up the co-worker's FrameMaker file and tried the above procedure. I was able to add a hypertext annotation (Alert). The co-worker then tried another Framemaker file and was still unsuccessful with the above steps. I made sure the co-worker is in view mode, not lock mode. We tried changing co-worker's FrameMaker settings from st
For previous documents, there was a requirement for the document to end with Page X/(Y Blank). I have a script that @Russ Ward helped me with to accomplish this. The script:Goes through Pages 2 to the end of the document and removes any custom master pages.Checks the last page of the document and determines if it is odd or even. If it is odd, it applies an X/Y Blank Master page and updates the page numbers in the footer. The script works fine, but I have a new requirement to add a blank page after the X/Y Blank page. (A totally blank page, not an empty page with the header, footer, and page number.) So I need two things added to the script: If the doc ends on an odd page, I need to add the blank page. To do that, I thought I needed to add a paragraph at the end of the document, have it start that on an right-hand page, and set the page background to none. I added this code, but it doesn't seem to be working (doc is previously defined as app.ActiveDoc): v
Through FM 2019, I could create a custom palette, by:1. Creating an FM document with the desired content2. Saving that document as MIF3. With a text editor, changing the statement: <DViewOnlyWinPalette No> to <DViewOnlyWinPalette Yes> and saving the result..4. Opening the modified MIF file in FM5. Saving the result as View Only When I tried the same steps in FM 2022, FM crashes. In fact, opening the modified MIF file in FM 2022 and using Esc F l k to lock it crashes. For my latest tests, I created a new Portrait document, saved it to MIF, and used that as my test case. How do I create a palette for FM 2022? --Lynne
I am now having problems printing a 6000 page book to a .ps file using Distiller. As the book prints, it eats up my C drive but I have it printing to a server folder. The server folder can well accomodate the file size. Eventually, my C drive is full and FrameMaker stops printing the file. I am using FrameMaker 2022 64bit unstructured. I use joboption "standard". I don't understand why this file chews up my c drive when I am sending it to a server. Any advice or solution?
Hello, I have unstructured documents that we publish in PDF format. I would like to start outputting to HTML5. When I use the default HTML5 Settings File, for the most part, the document looks okay (Stock Settings.png). There are some odd spacing or text alignments, but I figured this would be updated in Style Mappings. I know some of my alignment issues are coming from the Paragraph Designer, so I might have to think about updating our style guide. Maybe my problems are tied to this. When I try to alter the settings, things go way out of alignment (Altered Settings.png). I've tried using guidance from the Discussion Board, FM manual, and I've been looking over some videos, typically short and small amounts of information. I still can't get the document to display decently. Are there any in-depth videos or webinars on HTML5 publishing? I am using the latest version of FrameMaker: 17.0.5
Hello,I'm trying to create a cross-reference to an asterisked number, e.g. **2001. Is there any way to reference the number without including the asterisk? Do I need to create a new format in the cross-reference box? All of the formats I've tried so far include the ** in the cross-reference. Thanks!
FM 17, Windows 11. My documents are going to publish in two languages, so the note and postreq elements must be translated, too. I currently use the [othertype], in the hope to expose the text for translation. Somehow, the <ExposeAttributeValues>true</ExposeAttributeValues> in the .XTS doesn't work as expected. I have an Element called "Scene", which consists of two child Elements: "SceneDate" and "SceneNumber", respectively. The "SceneDate" Element has autonumbering that is populated based on the "NewDay" and "Month" attributes on the "Scene" element: The "SceneNumber" element has autonumbering that simply numbers from 1 onwards: Nothing unusual about these element and they're working as expected. This EDD is used in a Master document. I have another EDD that is used in a different document, which will cross-reference back to the "SceneDate" and "SceneNumber" elements in the Master document. In the EDD for this document I have "CrossReference_Date" and CrossReference_Date" elements:Again, these work as expected. Here comes the 'difficulty' I'm having:I have another element, "Flashback_Date" that is a cross-reference back to the "SceneDate" element. The "SceneNumber" will always be unique, but the "SceneDate" could be the same for multiple instan
I have been through an illness over the past year that has affected my brain processing, so please forgive me if this is an obvious question. I am barely hanging on at work. My company has been planning since 2022 planning to switch to another application for tech documentation, which kind of terrified me now because I don't think I can learn a new program with the way my mind is not working. Was relieved to learn yesterday that the switch has been shelved for at least another year. But now we need to upgrade to the latest version of FrameMaker. I am currently in FrameMaker 2019 version 15.0.6.956. I'm also using Windows 10 Enterprise. I am wondering how I would upgrade, and also if there is a cost to the upgrade. Thank you and please feel free to just link to relevant answer as I'm sure one is available but I've been unable to find it.
So I'm using structured FM, and I've noticed that when I have a figure on one page and a table on the next page, the figure title gets pushed down to the next page (see attached image). Why is this happening? How can I fix it? I have some books (Technical Manuals) made up of dozens of chapters with each chapter made up of several files. Each page has it's effective date and revision number inluded in the footer using dedicated paragraph tags. These manuals are printed/saved to PDF for use. Each manual has a List Of Effective Pages (LOEP), with effective dates and revision number, which has been created with the List of Paragraphs function. These books are set up so that the LOEP page layout is retained and the content automatically regenerated when the book is updated. There are a lot of pages and managing the LEOP manually is a lot of work. Prior to using Framemaker the work in updating the LEOP was much much more than the actual updating of the text. Hence one of the reasons for using Framemaker. The manuals require updating from time to time. Usually this involves just a few new or updated pages scattered through the manual. The date and revision number on the page are are updated when the
I have been working on a standalone document that includes a TOC. This originated in English and I was supplied a French version to tidy up. When I create a PDF the hand appears on the TOC entries but doesn't jump to the relevant chapter. Can somebody help me or tell me where I'm going wrong?
When I publish a book to epub from FrameMaker 2022, the chapnum variables are being published as a "&#8203", which seems to be unicode for a nonbreaking character. Any ideas how to circumvent this odd behavior?
I'm using FM 2019, and I have a very big file that needs to be restructured by adding another "level". How do I change all Heading2 paragraphs to Heading3? Do I really have to go through the huge file and manually change one by one?
Hi, I have a weird problem. I have a Structapps FM XML application that is using XSLT to transform an XML file into a structured FM document. The XML files are exports from a database and I have 2 example files. One is working flawlessly without errors, the second one is producing some errors, which prompts FM to give out the error message that the XML file is not valid. When I click Ok to open it anyway the document is valid. slightly obfuscated FM consolXSL Transformation Log Input: x:\xxx\xxx.xml XSL:x:\xxx\xxx.xsl XSL Processor Messages (Processor: SAXON) Transformation Successful. Hi. I kept running on this error message while publishing a PDF in FrameMaker. Is there a way to resolve this? Thank you!
I am building a small template meant for FM 2022. I have an issue with the TOC.. The TOC is to show Section titles, Chapter titles and Heading Titles. The Section Titles reside on a background frame on the Master Pages as can be seen in the illustration here. My issue is... I would like the Section Title to appear in the TOC BEFORE the Chapter Titles. But is it possible to change the order of appearance?
