When using the Data Merge feature in InDesign, I am encountering an issue where the content from my second document (B), which I am trying to data merge into my main document (A), gets repeated multiple times. Specifically, the merged data appears like 'aaaaaaaaab1aaaaaaaaab2' and continues in this pattern for all records of document B. This results in an excessive number of pages—up to 1000 pages. How can I resolve this issue so that the data merges correctly, without unnecessary repetition, and I can achieve the intended layout?
I’m having two issues using Peter Kahrel’s sidenote script:The sidenote_reference style is not being applied to the superscript footnote numbers in the text The sidenotes are retaining overrides. I can remove these randomly, but can’t figure out how to avoid having any overrides. Both issues are visible in this screenshot: Note that the superscript footnote marker has successfully been replaced by the Sidenote anchor+number, but the style has not been applied. The sidenote itself is showing the blue ‘Style Overrde Highlighter,’ showing that an override has been applied The text is imported from an rtf file, and the footnotes appear to import correctly. My Footnote Options are set to the most basic defaults. Has anyone else encountered this? How can I fix this, without manually applying the style to every reference?Indesign 2025, running on a Mac, using latest version of sidenotes.
I wrote a newspaper column using Pagemaker for several years. I cannot access the ones written before 1996. I am hoping to convert the columns into a blog but can’t access the text.I have tried using Indesign but the files are not recognized. I tried opening with Word, but each column (roughly 1000 words each) is roughly 400 pages long as it is filled with formatting detritis.Any suggestions?
I have a bunch of images I’m placing, and doing so by entering file names. When I search, InDesign ignores my OS settings (Mac) and searches my whole drive. Not a huge deal because I’m working from a files that are found easily, but is there a way to limit the search to the last folder from which something was places, perhaps unless otherwise navigated?thanks
I’m facing an issue with Tagged PDF export from InDesign.A single paragraph (with no hard returns or forced line breaks) is getting split into multiple [P] tags — each line appears as a separate paragraph in tools like PDFix and Acrobat Tags panel.Details:Text is continuous in one frameNo soft returns (Shift+Enter) or manual breaksUsing standard paragraph stylesIssue appears only after PDF exportExpected:→ One [P] tag for the full paragraphActual:→ Each line exported as separate [P] tagsHas anyone encountered this? Is this related to composer settings or a known tagging issue? Thanks in advance!
Hi All, We are an architect company in UK and 2 of our colleagues in the office have updated their 2020 iMac's to OS Tahoe and although their hardware is more than capable of running InDesign & Vectorworks at the same time, since updating, they can't run these 2 programmes at the same time. After doing some reading and Chat GPT, it seems Adobe are having problems with compatibility with Tahoe? Vectorworks (even 2024) seems to be ok with the update. Are there any plans for better compatibility with Tahoe soon? Or any tips in the meantime would be most appreciated. Thanks Roger
Hello, I’m formatting some text and would like to target characters within a set of parentheses, but only the first set (if more than one parenthetical occurs within the paragraph).Example:word (pronunciation) n. definition definition (second parenthetical); additional context Where only “(pronunciation)” would be styled and not “(second parenthetical)”. I found a prior thread with two strings that work to target all of the parentheticals within a paragraph. However, I don’t know how to only target the first parenthetical. I’ve tried to wrap the expressions in brackets and adding “?” or “+?” but those don’t work, and that’s the limit of my GREP understanding.i.e.((?<=\()[^)]+)+? Is there a way to target only the first parenthetical in a paragraph? If it’s relevant, I’m also using a nested style to target the first word to apply a different style.
Hi there!I create large book files for conference proceedings (the page range varies between 200 - 850 pages depending on the conference type). I am looking to mitigate the amount of time spent revising individual files, the TOC, and relinking images once they are added to a book file.Explanation of my current process:I am having authors add there content (text and images) to an InDesign template and then having them send me a packaged InDesign file. This is meant to ensure they use the correct layout and font styles. As expected, some authors aren’t in tune with InDesign and are either copy and pasting incorrectly or changing settings in the template file. When I receive the files, I also open and review/edit each file. By the end of my review all font styles, figures, etc. are linked properly. Then I create the book file. In the book file I add my interior cover, front matter and the separate author ID files. Once I complete another round of font style and figure link review, I create
How do I move a layer to the top and move an object to a specific layer? For example, I have three layers, and I want the final order from top to bottom to be:A1A2A3.I’d like to know how to use code to move A1 to the top.Additionally, I want to move the selected object to A2.I found this, but I don’t seem to understand it:https://community.adobe.com/questions-671/script-for-object-styles-being-applied-to-specific-layer-880528Thank you.
Hello community. Ive made a document with some buttons to navigate to certain pages, when I export as interactive PDF I get the following warning. But then I export as Epub, and view it in Thorium and the buttons are working fine.I asked ChatGTP and it's telling me Indesign can export Interactive PDFs, but I'm doing something incorrect. So do interactive buttons function in exported PDF interactive, or this function is only for Epubs?Thank you.PS: I view the interactive PDF in my adobe acrobat reader, where I can see a little hand hovering over my buttons, but nothing happens, if this information helps to solve my problem.
This issue was posted by a user on 9/17/254 in an InDesign-specific forum, which I cannot gain access to via login. User said: "Certain dialogue boxes appear partially off screen and can't be moved back on screen. For example, the Find/Change dialogue box and the Export dialogue box [specifically export to PDF (Print)] have both become almost unusable for me because important sections of those two boxes are located off screen. See attached screenshots. Dialogue boxes that allow you to expand them by clicking and dragging the edges/corners of the box are less of an issue - they often appear partially off screen, but once they're expanded at all, the whole dialogue box pops back into view. The Find/Change and Export dialogues do not allow this kind of expansion so that trick does not work for them. I've tried all the fixes that I've seen suggested for this issue online, including restarting my computer and changing the resolution of my displays, but none have worked. I've even updat
Already an older version of ID had this bug, but years ago the screen was white grey, now dark greay.how to happend: 1. Mac sleep, 2. Mac awake, 3. all ID screen is dark grey, even if refreshing or changing zoom or position. 4. I can select elements, but I see only the blue selectors, not the content or background. 5. need to quit ID and to restart to work as usual. 6. not seeing the content I sometimes do not know If I should save or not – risking to loose the work.
So here’s a new one to me.I have a Google Sheet that contains content copied from the web so that HTML formatting could be seen in code form. For example:Here is a bunch of copy, <i>and this part is in italics.</i>However, when I copy from Sheets and paste into InDesign, I get this, with quotes added, and the HTML removed:“Here is a bunch of copy, and this part is in italics.”--------------------Now, if I add certain characters immediately before or after the <> in the code, such as Here is a bunch of copy, <i>and this part is in italics.</i>1it pastes without adding quotes… but I tried also doing this with a ~, and it didn’t work.--------------------And by the way - this doesn’t seem limited to InDesign, as it even happens pasting into a text editor… I think it’s something being created within Sheets that’s doing it. Haven’t
I have a half-page postcard with small images embedding. I’m trying to save it to my CC files so I can share with a collaborator, but it either never saves or takes 20-30 minutes to save. Is that normal?
There was originally a piece of code used to obtain the height and width of an image.I found that when an image is distorted in InDesign, using this aspect ratio calculation is incorrect.This code can only be used to obtain the "usable width" of the image in the ID.Cannot execute s.redefineScaling([1, 1]);Because it may be a design requirement at this point.How to obtain the original height/width ratio of an image?Thank you.var image = app.activeDocument.selection[0];var imagePath = image.itemLink.filePath;var myResolution = 350;var hScale = image.horizontalScale * (myResolution / image.actualPpi[0]);var vScale = image.verticalScale * (myResolution / image.actualPpi[1]);app.preferences.rulerUnits = Units.MM;var myFile = new File(imagePath);var myDoc = app.open(myFile);myDoc.resizeImage(undefined, undefined, myResolution, ResampleMethod.NONE);var w = myDoc.width.value * hScale * 0.01;var h = myDoc.height.value * vScale * 0.01;
As part of our workflow, I receive a packaged InDesign file from another designer. We’ve recently incorporated alt text into all of the imagery to prepare for upcoming compliance requirements, so this is the first time I’ve run into this. She’s added all the alt text on her end and packaged and sent over, but when I open the file and update modified links as per usual, all of the alt text is stripped from the images. The only solution I’ve found has been to ignore the automatic update and update each link individually. This seems to keep the alt text in it’s place. Is there an easier solution? We have over 150 images in this catalog and going to add hours to our workflow.
InDesign hyperlink not working in pdf, which works in InDesign. If the text destination is applied color the link is not working in pdf but if color not applied it works in pdf. The pdf shows the link hand symbol but not going to destination.Tried applying color first then created hyperlink then also not working. What could be the issue? Why it is happening in pdf? Any solutions or suggestions to resolve the issue could be useful. Does applying color changes the text anchor property in PDF? The document is confidential, if adobe team email provided will send the InDesign document.
What is the latest version of InDesign that Peter Kahrel's kerning script will work with?
Hi, first of all,After researching quite some time I think it's time to put the question here.I've been working on a group project in InDesign lately so I have some texts sent to me and directly copied them in. InDeign didn't know some Fonts, so I changed those, but in the end it had no problem. But after exporting it, Acrobat tells me there is an unembedded font (T3Font_0) in the document.1. If that Font is in the document, why doesn't InDesign know about it (It's litterally not in the list of used Fonts)2. How can I find out what the source of said Font is or locate it? I've heard taht it can come from Photoshop pictures or pictures in general, but do I really have to control everything seperately? Ain't nobody got time for that.3. I have been told, that in other programs you can turn off the subgroups of fonts, so they become individual fonts. That appearently worked fo them, os is that a possibilty for my issue aswell and if yes, where do i find that option in InDesign?Greetings, M
I am creating a booklet in InDesign with ads imported that I’ve created using Illustrator. A few times now, I’ve created an ad… imported it… and when I make sure it’s centered (Command + Shift + E), it does NOT center. I’ve looked at the AI file and there are no stray items. I’m attaching two screenshots… one of the Illustrator file in outlines, and one of the InDesign file… showing it is not centered, even though I have centered it using command + shift + E. I know I can manually center it… but I’m just curious why this is happening. If you think it’s an Illustrator issue, I’ll post this on that forum, but it looks fine in Illustrator… just not InDesign.

Ruler guides cannot be dragged to pasteboard either I do not wish to put the ruler guide on master pagesAnybody know what the issue is here?Currently working in InDesign 21.1.0.56Windows 11Thanks,Nick

This happens to me every now and then: InDesign completely messes up the preview on my screen. If I zoom in or out, it usually disappears. At first, I blamed it on my old computer, where the graphics card was probably failing, but the same problem persists on my new Mac Mini.It doesn't seem to happen at all; it's completely random. This issue is still not fixed with the latest update (21.0.1), and it's even worse. If I move an object with a drop shadow, InDesign "moves" the entire shadow. Zooming in and out doesn't help; I have to completely close and reopen the document for it to work as it should.
I regularly create interactive pdfs in InDesign which have buttons to navigate between pages. The document I am currently working on has round cornered buttons that bleed off the page. When I export to pdf these buttons aren't stopping at the edge and show the bleed. No other elements that also bleed off on my artwork are doing this. I’ve created button in this way previously and not come across this before. Yes, I could crop the buttons so they don’t bleed, but that’s extra work that has never been needed before. Hopefully the attached screenshot shows the problem, the image on the right is my InDesign doc and the one on the left is the pdf. Any ideas from anyone?ThanksMac OSX Sequoia 15.0.1InDesign 2026 21.3Adobe Acrobat Pro 2026.001.21431
This pops up when copy/pasting a vector image from Illustrator to InDesign. Only from recent update.Needs to be fixed ASAP.
