How to Save an InDesign File for Older Versions (IDML) Did you know? InDesign files aren't backward compatible by default - a .indd file saved in InDesign 2024 simply won't open in InDesign CC 2019. But there's a simple workaround: export as IDML. What is IDML?IDML (InDesign Markup Language) is an open, XML-based file format that acts as a universal bridge between InDesign versions. Any version of InDesign from CS4 onwards can open an IDML file - making it the go-to format when collaborating with colleagues or clients on older software. But backward compatibility is only half the story. IDML is also one of the most reliable ways to recover a corrupted InDesign file. Because IDML is XML-based rather than binary, exporting a damaged .indd to IDML and then reopening it often strips out the corruption that's causing crashes, freezes, or "cannot be opened" errors - even when other recovery methods fail. Many InDesign users keep this trick in their back pocket specifically for emergencies, no
Hi, I’m having an issue with white areas appearing between the arrows. These are just standard white shapes, but they remain visible in PDF/X-4 and "small size" PDF files. I’ve tried various methods to remove them, but nothing has worked. How can I resolve this?
After correcting a page number in the Hyperlinks panel (Edit Hyperlink), then applying the style to something other than [regular font underlined blue link style], the page number reverts to the previous page that text linked to in the Table of Contents.I’ve now deleted all the hyperlinks and will try replacing them with a new link for each page number.
Whenever I install new fonts from Adobe's font website, the fonts do not appear in the drop-down menu on InDesign. I have restarted my computer, forced sync, and ensured that InDesign is up to date. I have also installed all these fonts directly onto my computer through the Creative Cloud, and they still do not show up. This has been a problem four times now as I need to install new fonts for typesetting and book cover design regularly. Eventually, they do show up after hours, but that is not conducive to my work as these things need to be finished quickly. Is this a bug? Or this is an issue that I could somehow fix on my end? Thank you. <Title renamed by MOD>
We are a manufacturing company of 300 employees. We have 20 engineers that use Office and Solidworks, and One guy (me) who uses Adobe software to publish the Install Manuals and Submittal Data Sheets. Our printed documents are attractive and professional and clean, even thought they are the end result of the Excel files and Word docs and Solidworks renderings. The process of Word to InDesign is manageable for small companies, but we are growing, and as we add even more engineers and new types of products AND we need to revise a lot of these every year. I am swamped. I have been pushing for Incopy now for years, but it has not (obviously) been approved. I just muscle my way through the influx of marked up PDF files and revised Excel files and word docs. I open my InDesign files in my license of InCopy and wow,, this is weird. I need to learn this. So,, my question is: Is Incopy the solutionfor a company that wants to allow the Engineers to edit the Install
Hi everyone,I’m having a recurring issue with InDesign and I’m wondering if anyone has experienced the same problem.Whenever I place an image in an InDesign document and then try to scale or fit the image to the frame, InDesign sometimes completely freezes. For example, I right-click on the image and choose an option such as fitting or scaling the image to the frame. At that point, the right-click menu stays open on screen, my mouse cursor changes to the loading circle, and InDesign stops responding. The strange part is that the freeze seems to affect more than just InDesign. I can no longer type, close InDesign, or properly switch to other applications, including non-Adobe applications.Even Task Manager becomes difficult to open. I can only access it by pressing the Windows key and navigating from there. Once InDesign freezes, I can no longer simply type in the Windows search bar either. This is happening even in a completely new InDesign document and with very small image files, so it d
For the past month or two, any time I try to Place a file or update a Placed file, InDesign usually freezes. The cursor turns into the spinning circle. I can close and save the files after this, but cannot close the InDesign app. I try various ways to place the files. File > Place or Ctrl D or copy and paste the placed file from another InDesign file. The files I use are typically on my Google Drive and I’ve installed the Drive app on my machine. This is REALLY getting annoying. Adobe used to be so good with bugs. Any ideas? I’ve read a few posts that say they thought version 21.3 fixed this issue but I’ve still got it.I’ve reset preferences, cleared old versions of InDesign, reinstalled InDesign. InDesign 21.6 Bug: When place a (Interactive-) PDF in a InDesign document, transparencies are wrong visible, when View → Display Performance → High Quality
I have chosen some text.First run: I want to restore the line spacing of the selected text to the "original paragraph style" line spacing of the first paragraph.Second run: Take the line spacing of the first paragraph of text, add a dot, and then apply it to the selected text. After the third time, repeat the second operation. It's a bit contradictory, these are two separate actions. We need to ensure that the line spacing is restored to its original state while also increasing it on top of it.var d = app.activeDocument;var item = app.selection[0];//-----------------------A-------------------//Apply the first leading to the selected textvar OriginalStyleLeading = item.paragraph[0].appliedParagraphStyle.leading;app.selection[0].text[0].leading = OriginalStyleLeading;//-----------------------B-------------------//Adjust line spacing When operating continuously, only repeat this stepvar firstParLeading = item.paragraph[0].appliedParagraphStyle.leading;app.selection[0].text[0].leading = fir
Every so often, since working on my current iMac (2017), my Application Frame in InDesign gets stuck on my second 32" Benq monitor. The top bar area sits just behind the menu bar. Once it's there, it's there. The accessibility to reposition the frame is now not possible. Even switching the Application Bar, the background frame is still stuck and cannot be moved.Surely, there must be a limit from stopping the Application Frame from running off behind the menu and off the top of the screen, or at least allow an interactive method in a dropdown menu to reset the Application Frame back within the frame of the monitor. For the moment, the only way I have found to resolve this would be to 'Delete InDesign Preference file' (Shift+Control+Option+Command) on start-up and reapply my personal settings and workspaces. After resetting, this crucial part of the frame is now visible.I'm running MacOS Mojave Version 10.14.3, on an iMac 27-inch 4.2Ghz Intel Core i7 running a second 32" Benq screen. I work on Windows. InDesign is very slow during any operation. Sometimes, when I close the program via Task Manager because it won't close otherwise, it seems like two InDesign programs are running. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?
Please fix this, thanks.Having text active and scrolling with mouse and Option no longer working.Resetting “Absatzformate” (sorry, don’t know how it’s called in english” with Option and mouse click no loner working.Very annoying if certain shortcuts you’re used to don’t work any more… EDIT: Ok, looks like it’s more like an Mac OS bug…. The issue seems to appear in Mac OS 27, coworker tried it in Mac OS 26.x and it worked...
Hello everyone. Sometimes, after several hours of work, the InDesign menus get completely misaligned! For example, right now when I click "Save As," the "Print Booklet" window opens instead. It’s a real hassle—everything is off! Thanks for your help, and have a great day. Olivier
"Hi everyone,I recently switched to a new MacBook and I am trying to set up my workflow. I have several ongoing projects that were created using InDesign 2024 (version 19.x).To ensure the layout and formatting of these existing files remain perfectly intact, I do not want to convert them to the latest version of InDesign at this stage. I specifically need to install the 2024 version on my new machine to continue working on these files. However, when I check the 'Other Versions' section in the Creative Cloud Desktop app, the 2024 version is not listed or available for download. I have searched through various Adobe help pages but haven't found a direct download link or a way to make it appear in the app.Could someone please guide me on how to access and install InDesign 2024 on a new macOS system?Thank you in advance for your help!"
InDesign Book: Chapter starts on right-hand page but displays an even page numberI'm working with an InDesign Book containing multiple chapter documents. In the Book panel, Book Page Numbering Options is set to Continue on Next Odd Page.Example:Chapter 9 ends on page 61. The Book panel shows Chapter 10 starting on page 63. The Document panel shows Chapter 10 starting on page 63. However, when I open the Chapter 10 document, its first page is a right-hand page displaying page number 62.I've also seen the same behavior in other chapters when the previous chapter ends on an odd/right hand page. Things I've already checked:Automatic Page Numbering is enabled. Document Chapter Number is set to Automatic. The page number is an automatic page-number marker. I found and removed one rogue section, but the problem persists in other chapters. The affected pages are right-facing pages but display even page numbers. Updating all numbering in the Book does not change the page number. The parent page
How can I make this banner disappear for good?I'm tired of having to click the “X” after every PDF export.Thank you
Why does Indesign keep changing a font every time the file is opened. I have replaced the font in the doc and all styles only to reopen the file and have the same font show as missing.
Hi everyone,I am dealing with a completely workflow-breaking issue on my Mac and I am completely out of ideas. Every time I try to place an image using Cmd + D (Place) or drag and drop any image into InDesign, the app freezes completely (Spinning Beachball) and takes an agonizing amount of time to respond. Here are my specs:InDesign Version: 2024 v21.6 macOS Version: Version 27.0.1 (26A434) Mac Model: Mac miniTo save everyone's time, here is an exhaustive list of the standard troubleshooting steps I have ALREADY TRIED, and absolutely none of them worked:Trashed InDesign Preferences and Caches completely (Using the shortcut on launch and manually deleting the folders). Exported the document to IDML and reopened it. Disabled "GPU Performance" in Preferences. Turned OFF Live Preflight completely. Set Display Performance to "Typical/Fast" and set Live Screen Drawing to "Delayed/Never". Granted InDesign "Full Disk Access" in macOS Privacy & Security settings. Removed all Offline Printer
When i open InDesign the app crashes. I’m unable to even open the app. I have re-installed the app, which didn’t solve the issue. I also tried installing other update versions, which also didn’t solve the issue. All my other Creative Cloud apps are up to date. What to do now?
I saved an indd file and when I open, most of the text is missing. Only 2 text boxes are there, the rest is missing. Any ideas as to what is happening here?
Hi all, is it possible to upload my InDesign snippets to the Adobe CC Library?
