InDesign

Hello, I am having huge issue with Indesign - I am working on a 200 pages document I saved indd and then exported PDF - all was good. Then I worked for a bit again and my Indesign crashes. When its recovered several text on random double pages were deleted!! How is this possible? Text is missing, there are only blank pages... Did anyone experienced anything similar?  What really suprised me was that pages were there, but all contened on these pages was missing. Of course i didnt realise it at first and I resaved my previous version...   Windows 10 ProIndesign v 18.1 Damage is so vast I have to start the project from the scratch. Really didnt see anything like this before in InDesign. Thank you for any helpMartina

Given that the first rule of troubleshooting an InDesign file that's crashing is to save it to an IDML file, and use that, it's a little disconcerting that the last few times I've had issues exportding IDML files.  It seems to export all right, but when I open up the newly created IDML file, it has one blank page, and the document doesn't even have my settings (like it has facing pages when the document i exported doesn't).  How do you troubleshoot the most important troubleshooting technique?Oh, and I'm on an M1 Mac running MacOS 15.5, InDesign 20.3.1, and EasyCatalog 20.0.2. 

I'm setting a longish (400+ pages) book, with 5 parts and 30+ chapters. I'll have running headers with part titles on verso pages, chapter titles recto. Q1. For the sake of simplicity, assume I've got a parent page per chapter. What happens when the page range of the chapter changes (due to layout changes, say, or additions or deletions to the text, or what not)? I'm assuming that the parent page remains assigned to the "old" page range, and has to be redefined or reassigned, but I wonder if I'm missing something? (I'm thinking of Word or Pages, where each chapter might be a section, and the section carries header/footer material. I'm new to InDesign, and near as I can tell I can't associate a parent page/spread with a section per se. Q2. My chapters start on recto pages, and should not have a running headers. If the corresponding verso pages has text from the previous chapter, it should have a part title in the header, but if it's blank I'd prefer that it not have a header.

I've worked plenty with text variables to create running heads. In this particular case, I'm going to have to convert to text when the project is paginated, so I can run Find/Replace on the resulting text. In my test file, the RH paragraph is working (picking up Day 2) and the RH char is working (picking up just the styled number). Great.Parent pageWhen I select the variable and convert it to text, it simply shows the text variable now on every page. This is true if I select the variable and Right Click (here showing I've changed just the recto one), or if I go into Define > Convert to text, in which it changes both pages.         It's not just this variable. It's true for the RH Char style number-only one as well.Is there something fundamental that I don't understand about Convert to Text?   

Hi everyone,  I'm stuck on a PDF report that must work well when emailed/downloaded through Google. Unfortunately, there seems to be a bug in how certain text is displayed (first photo is one example). When downloaded from Google Drive/Gmail and opened in the Chrome web browser, this odd bolding appears around some text. It does not happen when opened in Preview, Acrobat, Slack, etc. This needs to be a publicly available doc, with links included.I've tried downloading an interactive PDF, print PDF, checking the text, and everything else I can think of. If helpful, the text is Roboto, size 9.5. There is no image behind the text. There is a color text box behind the text, but I tried removing it, and it still happened (second photo). I'm losing my mind and would appreciate any advice!!  Thank you! SA

At some point on my book project (600 pages long) one chapter has managed to duplicate it's endnotes.  All the other endnotes are running normally and I cannot find anything in the main text to cause this. Even if i remove every page from the document these duplicated broken references remain. There are <?> in place of numbers preceding every one of them. Problems with them are:1) I cannot delete them. Everytime i select them one by one or all, and try to delete them indesign crashes.2) Exported pdf with the will become corrupted and cannot be opened. How can I get rid of them?

Hello, I saved my Adobe InDesign file last night, and this morning I opened it u,p and the links flashed as being missing. So I closed it, and now when I open the latest save file, it's a save point is from hours before I did tons of work. Does anybody know of a cause or solution to this? 

When I open some files in Indesign, I get the warning message ‘One or more hyphenation exceptions in “filename” conflict with the settings in the user dictionary file(s). Use the settings in the user dictionary?’ The question is: how can I find out what exactly these conflicts are?  

I'm experiencing a recurring issue with Adobe InDesign when trying to import any Word document (.doc or .docx). I always get the error:"Cannot place this file. No filter found for the requested operation."This happens with any Word file — even a brand-new, simple document created just for testing. Hello, How can I convert the original .PMD file (written using the Adobe Pagemaker 7.0) in to the .EPUB file without having any formating issue? Is it possible to convert this file into the Word (.doc/.docx) format? My question: Icon for InDesign files that appears white and not with the InDesign logo. What could be the reason? Is it a matter of different versions? In any case, when I double-click on the icon, the files open in InDesign. Thank you for your answer. What needs to be done to restore the normal situation?

Only one instance of a TOC entry fails to produce the leader dots. It shouldn't be a paragraph style issue, since the "Notes" section is the same style as all the other entries that work correctly. For example, the "Appendix" chapter is the same paragraph style, which generates the leader dots correctly.Has anyone seen this before? 

In InDesign, I'm trying to wrap text around the right side of a circle. Simple, right?See image. Note how on the bottom half of the circle, the lines of text aren't meeting the text wrap boundary like they are on the top half. See the last five lines of text. The effect is that the space between the circle and the text doesn't look even all the way down. I've messed with many different settings and can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

I bought the InDesign software and installed it locally. Does that come with access to the app on the web, or is it only desktop? I need to access it from multiple devices.

I want to include a bar code in my InDesgin document from a CSV file. I want the CSV file to serve as my database, but I cannot update the CSV file because it has formulas (2) that "disappear" because the CSV file apparently only allows "values". The attachment (on page 2) shows a bar code generated online and dropped into the document. I want to avoid that step and colllect all of the variable information in a database. Thanks in advance for your help.

I was really looking forward to linking excel files to an annual report containing tons of tables. But all the preparations and good thoughts put into the project have been shattered, and I can't seem to figure out if it's a random thing or not: Apparently, when I add or delete a row in the linked excel file, an error message appears when I update the link in Indesign stating "Cannot update link for xxxxxxx ... Please place the document again to reset the link". I don't get the message if I just edit the text or the figures. The weird thing is, that when I opened another INDD document where the same linked spreadsheet also appeared (with modified number of rows), it updated fine, and the changes were reflected in the Indesign doc. I use latest version of CC and Excel (Mac). Hope to hear some thoughts from you knowledgeable people. Hello, I am fieldtesting macOS Sonoma and I encounter a few (very) annoying bugs with the latest Adobe CC apps (all up to date). For Photoshop I have the 2024 version, for all other apps mentioned it's the latest 2023 version of the app.   Bug 1: Adobe Indesign. The page is "flickering" when moving an object with the selection tool. This flickering can be avoided when hiding the "rulers" in Adobe Indesign with  CMD + R   Bug 2: Adobe Indesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop (2024 release): When moving a panel to a secondary computerscreen the submenu can no longer be accessed. When moving that panel to the primary computerscreen it works just fine.   Adobe (and I do hope Adobe reads this) … are these Adobe CC related issues, or something Apple has to fix?  For many professionals this will be extremely annoying if this doesn't get fixed. Hello, I want to create business cards using the data merge option in InDesign. I am working on Mac. Indesign wants comma seperated data. I experienced troubles exporting this comma seperated file in Excel or Numbers. They tend to be semicolon seperated only. However, the easiest workaround was using Google Docs which allows the export of such comma seperated file. Then, when importing my data using data merge, any special character gets replaced with wrong characters. Like é or à get replaced with ÅÃ etc. Google told me it is an encoding issue. I downloaded the text editor Sublime which allows encoding in UTF-8, UTF-16, etc. However, any encoding different than UTF-8 results in an error when importing the data. Any advice on this?Thanks!

I have small icon that is anchored object, its like inline text object. I have imported all via XML. Icon should overlap with some numbers, but I want it to be behind text, but it covers texts. Is it possible to have image behind text while its still kind of part of the text.  

Hi I’m creating a print book cover for Amazon and hoping you can help me please with what I set bleed as in the bleed and slug dialogue box in the screenshot below, when creating the document.   My book size is 152.4 x 228.6 mm (6 x 9 inch). Amazon says the book itself if it has no bleed should have inside (gutter) margins of 0.375" inches (9.6 mm) and outside margins of 0.25 inches (6.4 mm), so I have created the body of the book based on that. Amazon says the cover with bleed should have inside (gutter) margins of 0.375" inches (9.6 mm) and outside margin of 0.375 inches (9.6 mm).  So I’ve entered those margins as you can see in the screenshot below for the cover. My question is - do I also have to put numbers in the bleed part of the bleed and slug dialogue boxes? Should it be  .125 in all 4 boxes as I have put below? Many thanks.      <Title renamed by MOD>

Hi We are typesetting a publication with two different styles of endnotes and to achive what is required we want to import some articles normally and some with the endnotes as static text. We made two presets; one with the "Import as Static Text" checkbox toggled on and the other with it off. However, moving between the two presets it is clear that the "Import as Static Text" settings is not saved by the preset, which is a suprise to say the least. Looking inside the .smp file which is created I see no preference which could be saving this setting.  I have never come across this before and couldn't see any discussion online, except when this setting was mentioned in relation to a script someone was using to import Word files - maybe to workaround this very problem. Are there any solutions/workarounds to get the preset to work? Many thanks,Iain

In ID, when pressing Alt+double click, I want to open jpg, tif, PSD in PS by default. However, in resource manager (Windows), I would like to default to Honeyview to open jpg, psd, tif when double clicking on an image. because I find Honeyview easier to look at the image. Is it possible to realize?Thanks.

I have completed my book of around 300 pages. It has 90+ chapters and each chapter starts with an image. I need advice from the community refgarding the kindle version upload on amazon.   1. Is it ok to have so many images for epub ? 2. What is the suitable process for uploading a book with so many images ? 3. Or shall l remove the images in the kindle version ? 4. Is adobe indesign EPUB format is OK for kindle amazon format ?    Thanks  

I am getting tired of trying to understand the logic of gradient tool in InDesign.... Are you somedays planning to simplify this???? Why don t apply the same logic as illustrator?

Clicking “Replace” several times seems to be normal.But click Replace All, and all the text in the back becomes H2.This question has been bothering me for a long time.
