InDesign

I've never seen this behavior in software before: Numbered lists in InDesign just continue incrementing their numbers, even when the list has been interrupted by some other kind of paragraph (which, in the vast majority of cases, means you are now in a new list). So... are we seriously doomed to the tedium of fixing the numbering on every first item of every list manually? And then, if we later want to add an item to the top of the list, we must not only set that entry to start at 1, but also go to the now-second entry and fix it so it isn't also #1?

In german-language there are special Characters called "Umlaute" (ü, ö, ä) or the "sharp s" (ß). If these characters are used in an vCard generated within the buildin function from indesign, they are replaced with other symbols on the iPhone QR-Code-Camera Reader. .   Do you know a good solution?

Hi! I've been working on an inDesign document for the last few months and took a couple weeks off. When I returned, inDesign had updated automatically and now my document will not open in this newer version. Are there any workarounds with this? Can I convert my older document to the newer version? Or revert back to the old version? I have it saved as both a pdf and indesign document. Please help 🙂 

Hi, Today I'm trying to convert PDF using Indesign beta as latest version InDesign beta able to convert PDF to InDesign. But when I try to open it from File > Open, the PDF is greyed out and I cant select it. Even I try enable from All Readable document to All document, nothing happened, and when I drag and drop directly to InDesign beta showing "Undefined Error" window. The PDF I try to opened was from InDesign, page less than 10 and connected to internet. Any idea what happened?

In the table context menu, there's "Distribute rows evenly," but that actually maximizes row height. Where's the opposite, to size each row to the text within it? 

I also have huge problems with table strokes: they seem to behave totally erratically. I can't control them even in Cell Styles any more. I've been trying to define a cell style where the sides and the top would be transparent and the bottom stroke black. But deactivating the unwanted sides doesn't work, and making them transparent with the new "Stroke" panel doesn't work either. It's a mess.

Hi Adobe Support,I'm unable to export my InDesign file to PDF. I receive the following error:"Possible cause of failure is present on spread with page number '1'."I’ve tried removing content from Page 1, checking for missing fonts/links, exporting to IDML, and rebuilding the spread, but the issue persists.The source .indd file is attached for your review. Please help identify the root cause and guide me to resolve it.

Not sure why this does this. Same border settings for both Item & Description, yet the block does not merge. There is clearly overlap, so they should merge. Other styles in this document merge fine. Just this particular one does not. Styles are based on Item & Desc. If I change the Desc style to be based on Item / HL, it will work, but then it doesn't update properly should I change the base Desc style.  Thoughts?

Hi,I'm using InDesign to create a memory book. Many people get one page each to fill with content. As past projects have shown, people are really keen about using Emojis, which I'd like to support. But I just can't get Emojis into InDesign via Data Merge, only when I copy&paste them manually.My workflow so far:In InDesign, I create a layout with sample texts, including Emojis.I create a character style for Emojis, using the EmojiOne font.In my paragraph style, I define a GREP Style to detect Emojis in any text and apply the character style created in the above step.This works. I just created a 12 page program booklet in InDesign. Saved to my computer (Mac)I am UNABLE to open this file - - InDesign says "Cannot open the document XXXX.indd" You may not have permission or the docuyment may be open already." - - I've quit InDesign, restarted my computer, but nothing works. Any suggestions?

When I close the recent fonts list and view the fonts used for certain characters, it points to the font's middle position in the list. But when you open the recent fonts list, it points to the most recent list. Sometimes this gives me a choice to get stuck. Because, sometimes I need to reselect the font down or up near the original font. Yes, the recent list is sometimes more convenient. But sometimes it's not the most needed. Now, I want to keep the recent list, but when I want to see the currently used font, I want it to point to the original list, not recent.How can I achieve this. 

I want to be able to click on a box in indesign and for it to open a PDF file. I need to be able to do this so that the PDF file is embedded and saved with the interactive PDF I create as the document will frequently being used offline so I cannot host the PDF online and link to it that way. Is there a way of doing this? I'm desperate! 

I'm trying to generate a document in ID CS3 (Windows 10) usng Tamil fonts. So far all attempts to import, copy/paste, place (from MS Word.doc) have been unsuccessful. The text displays normally in the Story Editor (image attached) and can be edited there, but in Layout the screen is blank (does not display any text - at all) with the cursor blinking in the upper left empty page. In Layout mode I can enter Tamil characters manually using a Tamil keyboard, but that sort of defeats the purpose. Is there a way to import Tamil text into a ID file?

Hello all!I installed Indesign 16.0 and soon I discovered a bug with endnotes. When I wanted to convert one endnote to footnote that did happen but Indesign added extra Tabs in front of every remaining endnote in the chain and removed the Tab after the Endnote reference! Then I got one more Tab in front each time I  converted an endnote to footnote. I discovered this after three occasions and I stopped using 16.0 immediately. Did we get a Beta-version for install?

Windows operating systemWhen I am placing .ai files into my InDesign document, there is no ICC profile shown in the links panel and none of the CMYK colors from the file show in the colors panel. I don't have this issue with Pantone colors. I'm attaching a screenshot of my current InDesign and Illustrator color settings along with the InDesign file and the Ai file I was trying it with. Any help appreciated!!

Hello, i designed business cards with qr codes using adobe indesign and sen them to print and faced 22.000tl of financial loss just because i trusted adobe softwares. How can it be that the "generate qr" feature in indesign wont support utf 8? And how can you explain that a print design software such as indesign wont support iphone device compatibility with iphones? How can anyone trust your company? Just because this negligance, i have lost my client, and also have to pay the 22.000 TL loss....

@frameexpert - Adding a mention since you don't necessarily follow the InDesign boards. First off, I know this isn't only an Adobe issue. I've run into similar problems with Visual Basic (and similar solutions). Anyway - My scripts tend to run through a lot of steps and function calls. I've noticed that sometimes some of the steps are "missed" - i.e., I'll run the script and the expected action does not happen. I'll run the script again and it works as expected. I'm "assuming" that the script moves on to the next action before the previous one completes and that causes the issue. I've found often putting a 0.5-second pause before and after the action usually resolves the issue:$.sleep(500);but I wasn't sure if this was commonplace (I haven't seen it often in scripts others posted online), or if there was a better solution ... Issues with this solution (applies to VBA also): Since the script works (sometimes) without the sleep statements, it's hard to know if th

I am working on a series of textbooks for a client, and the parent page has a running footer that is pulling the title of that lesson from the top of each page.  Some of the titles have a character style applied to make that character "italic."  The problem is the footer will not apply the variation because they are different fonts and one uses a "bold, italic" and the other uses "bold, oblique."   Does anyone have a suggestion on how to remedy this?  I'm attaching screenshots of a text page and the parent page as well. I thank anyone who responds in advance. Best regards,Rick Skippon  

Is there a way to search Text/Grep for phrases that are NOT in a particular paragraph style?In case you're wondering why I'm asking – I'm doing some consistency checks and don't want to just fire off a search replace that I know will affect hundreds of instances, so it would be better to check those few that have either been missed, or don't need to be changed (if that makes sense!)

Hallo in die Community!Seit einem Update von InDesign (auf Version 20.3.1., genutzt auf MAC Studio mit MAC OS Sequoia Vers. 15.4.1) habe ich beim Bearbeiten von bereits erstellten Dateien komische Probleme:– Text in Textrahmen lässt sich nicht mehr durch Doppelklicken mit der Maus markieren und bearbeiten; Textrahmen verschiebt sich.– Inhalte von Textrahmen werden ggf. nicht dargestellt sondern schwarz markiert (selten).– Beim Verändern der Textrahmengrößen (durch Ziehen an Rahmeneckpunkten mit der Maus) wird Text skaliert. Der bisherige automatische Textumbruch bei Beibehaltung von Schriftmerkmalen funktioniert nicht mehr.Kann jemand einen Tipp geben, wie sich die bisherige Funktionalität wieder herstellen lässt?Besten Dank im Voraus!Uli B.

I've been able to get alt text to display in PDF for JPG/PNG using 'Object' > 'Object Export Options' > 'Alt Text Source' > 'Custom', but any vector images (AI, SVG, EPS) in the same document doesn't show the alt text in the resulting PDF.   Is this normal?     <Title renamed by MOD>

Hi! I tried to export the document to a pdf file and it got stuck. So I tried to cancel, and it's been stuck like that for a week now. I can continue working on the document, but it's really interfering with the computer...

I had so much success with my 1st post (question) Thanks @rob day Next question. Have a text box at top of page that is the document version. For proofing to client, I need this to print so client can see what version they are looking at. But when printing the live print I need to make this texy box non-printing. Looking for a script that can make text box non-print.  I have tried this script: document.textFrames.item("version").nonprinting = true; I have the text box labeled using script label as “version” (with no quotes).I am getting below error:I also tried the below script: var version = doc.textFrames.itemByName("version");version.nonprinting = true; Getting this error:Again Thanks VERY MUCH for all help and comments! 

I am adding page numbers on a Master Page in InDesign 2022 and there are icons surrounding the text box. I've figured out what the yellow box on the right does,but I can't figure out what the little white "page" icon on the left is or what it does. Any ideas?
