InDesign

When working in InDesign, entire objects (text fields, color areas, linked images) disappear and are no longer displayed. Not even their frames. The layers cannot be selected by clicking on the location where the elements are located. Zooming into the document or changing the view mode doesnt change anything in the visability of the objects.  However, the objects are still there in the layers window. Similarly, when exporting a PDF, the invisible objects become visible again. I can make the objects visible again by copying and pasting them onto a new page or by saving an IDML and opening it. However, the objects keep disappearing when working in the file.Tested with GPU turned on and off.

Hello, Why can’t I read ONLINE a text in a PDF file, that comes from a placed pdf? I have a document that contains many PDF visuals (designed separately and placed on to the final combined InDesign document).I export them with InDesign file into a PDF (print), with digital settings format.When this PDF is opened in a browser (Google Chrome), the text from those visuals cannot be find (cmd+f). When opened in Adobe Acrobat, the find function works just fine for all the text in the visuals mentioned above.Any idea how to fix the online search (I need to send a link to users, that they can open online and do their search).Thank you in advance for any ideas to solve this! M.

 We use data merge frequently, using the same Excel files and InDesign templates over and over. Over the past week or so, our merges have stopped working, and we get this attached error message. We have removed any placeholders in both InDesign and Excel that are not being used. We have tried creating various .csv files from Excel. What could we be doing wrong, our workflow has not changed. Thank you! 

I have been trying to figure this out for several days now. I’m using 2025 InDesign on a Mac. I have one merge file with images that works just fine and I use it all the time. I’m trying to set up a separate merge file with a lot more images. I fixed several errors that were causing me to get the “missing image” error. Despite all that, I now get no errors but a merge file with text and blank boxes where the images should be. I have noticed one other difference between the merge file that works and the one that doesn’t: In the working one, my image frame has the correct column name <<logo>> inside the frame where the image should be, but the one not working does not display any text. Would be so grateful for a solution!And just to cover my bases, yes the column has an @ sign, and yes, I tried putting the spreadsheet in the same folder as the images and using the image file name, which got me the same result: No errors, but the frames are still blank after merge. I have set the default language in my Creative Cloud to English but my InDesign app interface keeps randomly changing the language to my native language. The only, incredibly tiresome solution is to uninstall and the re-install InDesign and HOPE that the interface in is english. Sometimes it is and stays that way maybe even months, but then one morning I open my InDesign and the interface is in my native language again. All other Adobe apps are in English and InDesign is the only app that keeps doing this at random intervals.This is such a waste of time!!!

We're seeing an intermittent crash when quitting InDesign 2026 (v21.5.1.73, macOS 26.5.2, Apple Silicon) while our C++ SDK plugin is loaded. First of all, if you have your Adobe set to Automatically update your apps, you’ll want to turn that off. I went into settings, because I was sure I had autoupdates off. But as it turned out (and I swear I don’t remember setting this), you can have autoupdates selectively off on an app by app basis. And for some reason mine WAS set to autoupdate InDesign. Like others, I also lost all of my PDF presets when InDesign updated to 2025, but if you are on a Mac, you can go to the place on your drive where Adobe stores those presets, and restore that folder from Time Machine. I restored that folder to yesterday, and I got all my Adobe PDF presets back again. User-defined PDF Presets: /Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings  I also set the Mac to only open INDD and INDT in the 2024 version of InDesign. If you let it open them in 2025, it requires a “Save As” instead of “Save” on any files you worked on, and once you save them from 2025, no one

it works perfeclty if i just apply an exsiting style, the moment I want to create my own style pack this message appears, when i click it away, it will come back like 5 times then indesign crashes, I have updated indesign but still the same issue, any ideas ?   <Title renamed by moderator>

Using Windows 11, current version of InDesign.Trying to complete the digital/ebook version of a book.First, I’m not new at this. Been writing and doing my own publishing for 37 years. I have never had this particular glitch before.No matter what I do, all my centered graphics are left-aligned when exported to epub. The exact same file does fine in both 8x10 and 6x9 print versions, using all the same graphics and settings.Object styles are used for all graphics.I’ve tried using other graphics I’ve used many times before with no problems, and graphics I’ve never used. Same result.I’ve tried resetting the default graphics style, even creating a new one.I’ve tried using a new template, both my own, and ones offered in ID panel.I’ve closed ID and reopened. I’ve rebooted my computer.I’ve checked for updates on PC and in Adobe CC.I’ve rolled back InDesign to previous version (as suggested repeatedly on various forums and help sites). I have a brand new MacBook running MacOS Tahoe 26.5.1When I try to open an InDesign files it opens the weird Adobe home screen with InDesign files as thumbnails instead. I have never seen this home screen because what is the point in it. So I have to open any InDesign files via the home screen: Open > choose file on Desktop.But InDesign literally doesn't work. There are no options, no toolbars or control panel etc.Zero keyboard shortcuts. Even zooming in on a doc doesn't work. All workspaces have disappeared. There are no options for workspaces, e.g. Essentials, Printing & Proofing, Advanced etc.I have tried reinstalling InDesign twice, deleting caches, Reset all preferences to factory defaults  etc etc zero fix.  

It has been working with no problems for years but now I am unable to open. If double clicking a file to launch, it will get as far as displaying the file but then freezes. If launching InDesign from the task bar, it will open the standard UI display but then will freeze.The pre-flight shows "checking" and I can hear the PC working on something in the background, but nothing within InDesign works and I have to end task using Task Manager.I have uninstalled/installed numerous times but still having the same issue. I have also gone through the delete preferences process.

Hi everyone!  I'm still learning InDesign and I'm sure I'm missing something here. I'm working on a document that is an image heavy graphic novel, but there are also sections of text. I have smaller objects/icons that I have anchored properly, but I'm having a problem with my full page comic spreads. Since these images take up whole pages and are surrounded by other full page images there is no "text" to anchor it to.  I tried a work around by creating small empty text boxes near the images and they successfully anchored in my InDesign file, but when exported to epub, all the full page images are showing up at the end of the book. The smaller images and icons are staying in place.  How can I anchor images on a page with no text when they take up a whole page and follow other pages that only include images?  I know how to fix the problem in the code but if I can figure it out before exporting it would be a lot less time consuming.      <Title rename

Hello,I am a professional graphic designer and I use Adobe InDesign all day, every day, for client work.Immediately after installing the macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta, InDesign became almost unusable.The problem is intermittent. InDesign can work normally for a while, then suddenly freeze. It seems to happen most often when I am editing text or changing fonts, although I cannot reproduce it consistently.When this happens:Save becomes disabled (greyed out). Save As becomes disabled. Close becomes disabled. I cannot save my work. I cannot close the document. The only solution is to Force Quit InDesign, which causes me to lose hours of work.This happens with multiple InDesign documents, not just one file.I have already:Updated InDesign to the latest version. Tested a previous version of InDesign. Restarted my Mac many times.The issue started immediately after installing the macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta.Has anyone else experienced this issue?Can Adobe confirm whether this is a known

I installed Adobe 2026 on my imac. Now undo doesn’t work. It’s permanently grayed out. ID 21.2 on a Retina 5K running Ventura 13.7.8. If you look at screen shot, I can’t undo the neon effect I made or undo the letter ‘M’ I deleted. I’m opening 2025 ID to see if that helps. 

macOS 27 Golden Gate Beta…Find/Change doesn’t show up…I know I’m not supposed to be working with a beta OS, but here I am… I just thought it might be useful for some people to know…

Hello everyone,On a two-page spread, I have drawn text frames, two per page. As I want to use this layout for most of my pages, I have copied the spread in the Parent Pages part of the Pages panel, thus creating a new spread of Parent Pages.Then I inserted two new pages based on that recent new spread, but the new pages in question show my four text frames with dotted lines only, and I cannot click into them to start typing text.When I go back to their Parent Pages, the text frames are dotted lines as well, but the borders of the text frames become solid/normal when I hover over them with the black arrow, I can select them and type in them. In the regular pages based on those Parent Pages, I cannot select them, they remain just dotted.I must have done something wrong… Advice will be very much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi, In Screenshot 1, there is an EPUB. Looking at two images, space(1) and alignment(2) are different from what I expect.Space is larger. Machine is a Zenbook Duo (Windows 11). When exporting a relatively small (five page) document to PDF, InDesign hangs and never recovers.Workaround is to tick the “Create separate PDF files” checkbox and combine the pages afterwards.Is this a known bug or am I doing something wrong? I’ve used InDesign for years and have never before seen this behavior.

For thousands of products with multiple sections and styles, the thing that breaks native Data Merge usually isn't the record count — it's that Data Merge binds one template to one dataset. The moment your product families need genuinely different layouts, you end up maintaining several merge documents and stitching the output together, which is where the time actually goes.Two questions that would change my answer:Do your "sections/styles" differ in layout (different frame arrangements per family) or only in styling (same structure, different paragraph/object styles)? The first needs a different approach entirely; the second is often solvable with object styles and nested styles alone. Are your product images consistently named and all present? Hello all,Today I have two questions to which I haven’t found an answer by myself:1. My usual layout has one text frame filling the whole page, but divided in two columns.When I insert a footnote, say in the left-hand column, I want its text to remain in that same column, and not spill over under the right-and column as if I had given a Span command.I have seen in questions already asked in this forum that some users have their footnotes behave natively just like I would want mine to behave, but I haven’t so far found a way to achieve that result.I attach a screen capture, as a picture speaks a thousand words, or so they say...2. is it possible to widen the space between the short separating line above the footnote, and that footnote itself? I have tried Space Before in the Footnote Paragraph Style I have created, but it doesn’t seem to work.Many thanks to you all for your help.Dominique
