I created a book in FM and am now trying to create a TOC. Everytime I do this, I get a Book Error Report stating seveal files are open. I open those files (they were indeed closed), unlock them, save, then close them.  I try to run the TOC again and this time different chapters are locked. This goes on a repeat cycle.  Now, the files I have literally opned and closed 8-10 times are showing as locked... and they are definetely NOT open. I am unable to create the TOC... and making my deadline almost impossible.  Is there a way to get this feature turned off?  Granted, it is helpful so two people are not in the doc at the same time but this unexplained (and unsolveable) locking is driving me insane. I would rather take my chances without this feature.  I would really appreciate any suggestions!! I am on FM Version 17.0.3.546

In FM2022 - I am currently using the following definition in a System Variable:<$monthname> <$daynum>, <$year> Which displays as: February 28, 2024 What I want is: Feb 28, 2024 Ideas? 

Instead table anchor symbols only appear if you have View > Text Symbols enabled. This can be very frustrating for a new user because the default is that it is not enabled (at least as installed through my corporate license), whereas the documentation presumes that it is enabled. I think the documentation for Table > Insert Table should be enhanced to mention this. In addition, the documentation for text flowing around a table is very frustrating if you do not have text symbols enabled. Before I discovered the View > Text Symbols feature, I was always getting text flowing around tables but I wanted it to be positioned before the table. Turning on Text Symbols showed me what was happening. The documentation for text flowing around tabls should mention that users can enable View > Text Symbols in order to better see what is happening with their tables and paragraph in which they are anchored.

I started using FrameMaker 2022 in January. Before that, I was using FM 2019. I also have Creo on my laptop, which I use sometimes (but not recently) to view models. Yesterday, while I was doing something (and I can't tell you what it was - opening and closing files maybe?) Creo Simulate opened on my laptop. I thought it was weird but just closed it and went on. Later, I tried to create a new book and it saved as a Creo versioned file with the Creo Simulate icon.  I've tried several times to create the book and it just keeps saving as a Creo file. Has anyone ever seen this?

Hello, I know that when graphics become unlinked, it can be dealt with when you are opening the document (FrameMaker will alert you of the missing graphics and you can browse to the missing graphics and relink them). But what about when a document is open and there is a gray square where the graphic should be, because it has lost connection with the graphic for some reason? In InDesign, you can simply select the graphic and there is a "relink" command under one of the menus, which, when selected, lets you browse to the missing graphic and relink it. There is no such thing in FrameMaker that I can find.My "workaround" is I delete the graphic and reinsert it. This is fine if you know the exact name of the missing graphic. But what if the user doesn't? How do you link back to it then?FrameMaker is such a mixed blessing. Google "framemaker bug report system" and after a few clicks you arrive at https://tracker.adobe.com/#/add_bug . This web page presents some inscrutable fields. The first one is "version". I go to Help > About Framemaker and it displays the following: 17.0.0.226. this is not in the pulldown menu for "version". My best guess is that the leading 17 indicates that the version is FM2017 in the pulldown. Another problem further down the page is the field called "build". There is nothing in Help > About Framemaker called "build". My best guess is that the build is 17.0.0.226. The fix to both of these issues would be to align the information in About Framemaker with the pulldowns in the bug reporting system. However, when I guess that I have filled in correct information and click on "submit" it just gives me a cryptic error message. Perhaps this bug reporting system is no longer functional. In that case it should be taken down from the web so that google search won't find it.

Hello, I'm structuring xml andI have an issue to make tap stop in my purpose.I made simple list and crossreference with format <$pagenum>for example,<sl><sli>test<fm-xref>target<fm-xref></sli></sl>so it shows "test 1(pagenum)"but I want to make it "test ----------------------------1(pagenum)" for design.Please help me about this.Thank you. 

Hello,I'm trying to get my toes wet with scripting , so please pardon my ignorance. I found a boffo script called Unformat Clipboard that I'd like to try out. When I go File>Script>New Script, I'm expecting a script editor of some sort to come up so that I can paste the script text in. Instead, nothing happens. What am I missing here? Thanks,Bill

Hello, This morning I opened some FrameMaker files that I worked on last week. I didn't add any new fonts or do anything exotic with them, and no one else had access to these files. Only me. Yet, this morning I opened several of these files and got this message: What does this mean? And how did I suddenly acquire unavailable fonts when I have not touched these files in nearly a week? As a side note, I got a message today from Adobe asking for my feedback about my recent cancellation of Adobe Creative Cloud. Neither I nor my employer has made any moves to cancel my subscription. This happened once before (Adobe decided, unceremoniously of their own whimsy) to cancel my subscription. A bizzare conversation with their customer service personnel ensued, and all was fixed. I have a script written originally in FM 2017 that opens an FM file and loads a list of words from a table.  The script has worked fine in all versions until FM 2022.  When I run the scipt I get an error that says: "Couldn’t open Words Not Spelled Out.fm!  Check to see if it is an FM document and if somebody is already using it.  The selected path was:\\C:\Editing Tools\FM Hitlists (ver 2.0)\Words Not Spelled Out.fm The code I'm using to open the file is:var path = “\\\\C:\\Editing Tools\\FM Hitlists (ver 2.0)\\Words Not Spelled Out.fm”doc = SimpleOpen(path); Title of document I'm trying to open is "Words Not Spelled Out.fm" I tried searching on the topic, but no relavant posts.  Wondering if anyone else has run into this.

Hello,Currently running FrameMaker 16.0.5.1096, Acrobat Pro 2023.008.20533 (we did just recently upgrade Acrobat).Recently when opening a document, the alert “Document is using unavailable fonts…” pops up, I select Ok and the file opens. It replaces the fonts, but it is changing existing font which should be Times New Roman to TimesNewRomanPSMT-Identity-H font in certain random areas. See image, yellow highlighted text is the -Identity-H font. The arrow it pointing to the placement of the cursor and the properties are reflected in the paragraph and character designer. But it is very random, and it is not present in the 5.1.2.1 paragraph (or anywhere else on the page).Side note the formatting we are using: a heading paragraph style (Arial) with auto numbering that uses a Run-in head to pull the next paragraph line (Times New Roman) up and separate by a period.This file has gone through nine deliveries and this issue has not presented itself until now. We have delivered the file as a PDF

Can I use thumbnail instead of bullets in FM doc?      

This should be a simple and common question, but most posts I found linked back to this:https://community.adobe.com/t5/framemaker-discussions/find-replace/td-p/3581679#4032650 I tried the script there and failed.  Some things that would help hopefully: I'm trying to replace one name at the end of a document in the main flow (in the last table of the document). So the script only has to start at the end and when it makes the first replacement or leaves the table, it is done. From the linked thread, I tried to use (obfuscating a bit):FindAndReplaceString(app.activeDoc,app.activeDoc.MainFlowInDoc,'CHARLES T . SMITH','JOHN Q. PUBLIC', 'True');And I got "Undefined is not an object" Second question. Currently this name is in plain text in our FM template.I'm considering putting it in a user variable - maybe named _Signature.Would the script still find and replace it if I did this?Or - I have a script which updates the document with the latest Master Page Formats

Hi all,We are starting a new documentation project from scratch. We use unstructured Framemaker for our previous products. We have subscribed to the Adobe Technical Communication Suite.For the new project we have the following requirements:Output formats are pdf and HTML5 online help for software.Conditional text for different variants of the product.We also want to create the GUI strings and tooltips for the software. Is this supported with on-board tools in Framemaker or Robohelp? We have no experience with this.What is your favorite tool to implement this? Framemaker or Robohelp? I need to add custom IDs to certain DITA elements (topics, sections) in my Structured Framemaker documents. In unstructured Framemaker, I used markers. I need to transfer these, or recreate that marker data in my structured FM docs which are in DITA. I can put markers in the DITA file, but I'd rather put them into a proper element so I can find them and manage them more easily. Can anyone help?

I am using Framemaker with DITA, and some of my topics include multiple sections. It would be so great to generate these topics with an automatic miniTOC at the top, listing the sections within the topic...

This is driving me crazy. I watched one of the online videos about numbering settings, and I thought it would be a great idea to set up my documents to have Roman numerals on the title/toc pages, and then Arabic for the remainder.And there has been no peace since.So, I go to my "Cover" page to set it to have Roman numerals:I have it set to "Page." I want it to start at 1, so I set it to start at page 1, and then I select lower case Roman numerals, and hit "set." I do the same thing for the TOC, only I select "Continue numbering..."  Then, because I want the remainder of my pages (from "Introduction" chapter to the end), to have ARABIC numbers, I do the following: I select the Introduction chapter, open Numbering, and set it as follows:  Then, I set each subsequent chapter the same as this, but select "Continue from previous..." Then I update my book, and create a pdf. And that's where it all goes south:  It makes every page Roman!

Hello, In a single paragraph, I would like to create a little vertical space between two sentences. How do I do it ? 

I am using Framemaker 2015 (Verision 13) and paste special no longer works. Nothing happens at all, it does not even paste the text. This feature is especially helpful when pasting text from other sources. Has anyone else encountered this and do you have a solution.

I have clips that are separate yet change their framing everytime I change one of them. Also, when I export the whole timeline changes framing. Please help.  

Hi everybody. I need some with bulleted list.I work with FM 2017 (14.0.2.425). Most of the time I use it on my office PC, and everything goes smoothly in this case. Recently I was forced to use it on my notebook as well. I’ve installed the same FM version and placed all fonts used in the document to C:\Windows\Fonts. I’ve checked the “Myriad Roman” font is installed on both machines. However, here the problem began.On my office computer, FM shows bullets fine (the following illustration):However, on my note book FM shows the following:I’ve also checked that Zapf fonts are present on both computers.Any ideas what’s happening and how to solve the problem?Thanks in advance

Hello, I hope someone here can help. We're attempting to connect FrameMaker 2020 to Sharepoint online as the CMS for our global teams. I have a few questions:Has anyone been successful with this? We've tried both a Teams sharepoint and a communication sharepoint. Neither seem to work, In our Adobe support ticket Adobe suggests it's an issue with a changed API on sharepoint, however if someone else has that combination working, perhaps it's something else in our system that's causing an issue. I'm also interested if you're using FrameMaker 2019 and Sharepoint, if it works, and which version of Sharepoint are you using?And finally, if you're successfully using FrameMaker 2020 with another CMS, what options should we be looking at? Thank you for your time!Mary Ann  

About the paragraph catalog, what is the "check" symbol in grey (see blue lines) ? Why have I several check symbols in grey ? Because these paragraph tags (in grey) are not used in the document.
