When I insert an InDesign text box on an image or area with a color background, it inserts white bars. You can see an example at the bottom of this screenshot. This was a version of the "publish online" document. I know I am missing a step somewhere. Help! And thank you!
I have a couple dozen photos (identical size and aspect ratio) that I want to drop into indesign and have them laid out in rows and columns to fill however many pages I need in order to print them all.I've figured out how to manually create grids or place these image files. But this is a task I will be repeating a couple times a month and I'm trying to automate it. What is this process even called? Collating? Can someone point me in the right direction - so far most of the tutorials I've found have to do with changing text layouts and such between business cards or something similar. Thank you in advance for the help.
Just a general learning question: What is the purpose of the ...Baseline Options in the Text Frame Options panel? Does it have to defualt to unchecked? Why is that the preferred state? I working on a Digital Publishing project and have been frustrated with textboxes when trying to nudge them in to proper relative position on the document. The text jumps around inside its box when I move it. Thanks to help here, I found that checking the Baseline Options box cures this condition. But what is this feature for? Why is it preferred loose and uncontrollable? There must be a reason you pros prefer this state. Thanks. <Title renamed by MOD>
Hi everyone, I’m currently experiencing a strange issue: a number of files suddenly won’t open when accessed directly from the server. I then tried copying them to my local hard drive, but they still won’t open from there either. What’s puzzling is that identical files, which I saved locally at the same time, still open without any problems. My suspicion is that the affected files on the server might have become corrupted – a disk problem, or something similar. Has anyone else come across this kind of behaviour or have any ideas what might be causing it? Thanks in advance for any help!
I've got an InDesign file that I'm using the "Publish" feature so that I can have third-parties review the document. The document has video files in it. If I revise the InDesign file and then go to Publish -->Update Existing Document, and then go to the link when the publishing has completed, all the pages are blank, have the text "No video with supported format and MIME type found." and look like this : If instead of updating I Publish the ID file as a new page, all the video is there and everything looks right. Before you ask "Did you empty your cache or try a different browser" the answer is yes. Before you ask "Did you try a different page layout" the answer is yes – If I switch to a letter sized PDF it seems to update fine. Hmmmm. If I remove the password, the document loads as expected... If I add the password back in, the document doesn't load and I don't get the "No video with supported format and MIM
This PDF was shared from a kind person in the forum. I have a feeling it's not complete. Is there a full version. For regular editor, Peter Kahrel's A Grep Editor works very well, are there any other available editors?
I have a paragraph that asks several questions. After the last question I want the GREP style to apply to give the answer to the questions a different color to get this result."Where was it? When did it happen? At the market at 5:00 p.m." This below works for finding the question mark, but the problem is that it finds every single one.(?<=\?).+Giving me this problem."Where was it? When did it happen? At the market at 5:00 p.m." Is it possible to find only the last occorance of the question mark? Thanks!
In the last few upgrades of Indesign something has stumped me. When I move or scale objects there is snapping to some sort of invisible grid. This happens when I move or scale something with my mouse but not when I move something with the the up and down arrow keys (I set the keyboard increments to a very small setting and that works). I've tried troubleshooting this problem by playing with the settings for guides and grids under the "view" menu, changing preferences for units and increments and guides and pasteboards, anything I can think of. Nothing turns this snapping off and it is impossible to do percision alignment when scaling because I can't scale with the up and down arrow keys, only the mouse and other input devices. I have been using InDesign for a long while so I am a relatively advaced user but I haven't been able to figure this one out.
Very often, I need to compare two documents. I therefore open them and put the windows next to each other, so that I can see them both. I wonder whether there is a way to scroll in both documents simultaneously? So, instead of… clicking on window 1,then scrolling in doc 1,then clicking on window 2and finally scrolling in window 2…there would be… just ONE keyboard action to turn pages in BOTH documents at once. That would come in SO handy! Is there something like this?
have some embedded online files within a work website. what happens with those files when my email address is no longer valid due to job change? are they still accessible?
I'm currently working on printing a zine containing some of my black and white photographs. I printed a test zine with the printing company I'm working with and the images look dull and flat - no deep blacks to speak of. The zine was printed on a digital press and I used the CMYK color profile provided by the printing company (Coated GRACoL 2006 (ISO 12647-2:2004)) in my images/InDesign file. To remedy the lack of deep blacks, the printer suggested that I use Rich Black (CMYK = 30% 30% 30% 100%) rather than Standard Black. I understand how to create a Rich Black swatch in InDesign and apply it to something like a solid black background, but I don't really understand how to apply that swatch to my photographs. Can anyone suggest how I might go about using the suggested Rich Black to produce deep blacks in my printed photos, using InDesign and/or Photoshop? Thanks in advance.
I have several files in a book file. The first file has the document title, p-tagged as "Document Title". I then use a variable also called <Document Title> in the footer, like this: © 2025 MyCompany Inc. Proprietary and Confidential<Document Title> Here's the variable definition: The document title appears in the footer of all pages of the first file, as expected, but it does not appear in any of the later files in the book. That space is blank. I synchronized the later files to the first file, but that didn't change anything. How do I share the document title across all the files? Or do I need to set this up differently?
When I have a large document I'm working on (in this case, 4x8 feet), there are times when I want to be zoomed in for detail work, and times where I want to see the entire design at once. When I'm zoomed in, I can use the hand tool to move around. When I'm zoomed out, the document is fixed in one position, in the centre right of the screen. I'd like to be able to move it, usually more into the centre, so that it's lined up with my eyeline. For some reason InDesign won't allow me to do this at all. It's beyond frustrating. Can you fix it, please?
I read an old question (2019) that said you cannot highlight non-contiguous words/phrases. I'm wondering if this has changed now and if there is a way to do this. I want to highlight subheadingins in chapter and assign a paragraph style and change them with one click!
When placing two simple, non-layered sheets in ID from the same excel file, why is the font on one DARKER than the other? They're formatted in Excel exactly the same. (I tried a work-around by copying as picture but it wasn't as crisp when I saved as a pdf.) I don't need to link, just need to place as-is. Pulling my hair out a little here. Any solution or work-around appreciated. I've searched the community and tried several things. THANK YOU
I imported a pdf into InDesign. When I place an object with a shadow (or glow) over the pdf, the entire pdf becomes darker/heavier, and it prints that way. I checked the shadow and the spread, size, and distance were all very small. Why is this happening?

How to check if a character is a nonbreaking space in UXP?if (chars[chars.indexOf(char) - 1].contents === " ") { console.log("yes"); }I can't use \u00A0 or /~S/. The first one doesn't work, the second can't be used in .jsx UXP.
Hi there The Table of Contents in ePUBs only show up as half the width of the screen when exported. The lines wrap and they are clickable but do not take up the full width of the screen as they should. Can anyone advise on how to fix this please? Thanks!
Hi I've an issue about vertical alignment. I have a simple text inside a frame and another frame inside as you can see in the screen. How can I align in the center the text? Around the red line. I tried different vertical alignment but all of they manage the whole block ThanksFrancesco
Working on a very large book of 420 pages. i upgraded recently and now at some unknown reason text in a text box will clear spontaneously. Its happened about six times today. I am quite experienced and have no idea what or why.
I wonder how much time this bug has wasted. I noticed that when changing section-specific info in the Layout / Number & Section Options menu, sometimes it would produce totally unexpected results and screw up multiple sections and page layout. It turns out that this is because pages are inexplicably selected in the Pages tab, unrelated to where the insertion point resides. Sometimes two pages are selected at once in that pane, other times only one... but frequently the selected one(s) is wrong. I didn't select it, and it doesn't reflect the page on which I'm working. Further experimentation shows that it usually selects both pages of a spread, instead of the one you put the insertion point on. That is a major PITA; if you click on the right page thinking you're going to start a new section, InDesign will instead start the section with the left page, messing things up. With the insertion point sitting in text, I expect any changes made to the section or chapter o
Hello everyone! I was wondering if there is any way of linking two o more text boxes so that when you write text in one of them it automatically changes in the other. I am not talking about threading for text overflow. I am also interested in doing the same with images. I am going to set a practical example: a have 50 posters that are meant to be almost the same, but they all have different logos. The text and background image is the same for all of them. I would like to change the text and image in one of them, and then InDesign would automatically update the rest. Is this possible? Any ideas?
