I am working on a book file with the chapter names occuring both at the beginning of each chapter, and on top of every odd page.Some of the chapter names are "too long" (cannot be changed, as this is an old book) and are to be abbreviated at the top of the page. Is there a way to do this automatically (where I at one single place type in the abbreviation - without changing templates, etc)?As the chapter name at the top of the page is in its own paragraph style I was thinking that this maybe could be done using GREP - but that is just an idea, I'm not very profficient at GREP.

I'm not sure how this happened, because I have my update settings configured so that when I update InDesign, the older versions get deleted, but somehow I had both InDesign 2023 and 2024 installed at the same time. When I would double-click a file to open it, it defaulted to the 2023 version. I uninstalled 2023 hoping that that would make the 2024 version the new default app for all InDesign files, but now, when I double-click to open, I get a Windows error message: "This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default App Settings Page." The problem is, when I try to do this, Windows isn't giving me the option to associate InDesign files (of any sort!) with the 2024 app. Do I need to reinstall the 2024 version? Or is this an operating system issue?

I designed a book in Adobe InDesign 2023 and exported it as an EPUB (Fixed Layout). When I open the EPUB file in Adobe Digital Edition 4.5, the eBook looks good with only minimal differences that do not affect the design. It looks ready for any eBook publishing platform.However, the client wants to check it on Kindle, as they will be publishing it there. When I open the same EPUB file in Kindle Previewer 3, I see many design errors. PNG and PSD images, which I included in InDesign, have white backgrounds. This causes them to overlap and hide the text. JPEG/JPG files look good. Is there any solution to this?See below images: left side view is Kindle.       

Can these values ​​be customized, where can I set it?I remember when I asked a similar question last time, I could jump directly from 100% to 80%. After the new version of 19.5, I can only jump to 75%.I need 80% or 85%

Hello! I'm trying to create a compound shape in InDesign to join two elements, but I need to be able to edit them again and recover the original shapes. They are comic balloons that I need to reshape and change over time as a project advances. For example: in Illustrator it's possible to select 2 shapes and make a compound shape that looks like a single object. The advantage of this is that if I double-click on the tail of the balloon, I can still access it as an individual object which is very convenient for my projects. See image 1 below:That's exactly what I'm trying to do in InDesign. I'd like to use the same approach but I don't manage! I can join the circle and the tail so they become a single speech bubble. But if I join them, I can not recover the original shapes. And the compound shape that I can make in inDesign,  looks like the image below:I can't find options to make the speech bubble line look continuous like in Illustrator.  Is it possible to edit thes

Hi everyone I'm creating a doc with multiple animations. I have a button that triggers several animations in sequence (about 20) and it works perfectly. I also have a Pause-Button that pauses all of them. The problem that i have is that the pause button can only pause animations inside the sequence that have already been triggered. The rest still plays, when the the timer reaches their mark. Vice versa the button to unpause them, starts every remaining animation in the queue at once. Is this issue even solvable? Thanks allot for every input. Cheers!

Indesign 19.5 can not export to epub 2 is not working.I will export, but it ads epub 3 elements also. Epub 3 elements are not allowed in epub 2.

For some reason, my text box (which contained a large amount of text) was converted to a graphic box. How do I convert it back to a text box so I can add/edit text? I am using the latest version of InDesign on a Mac. 

Let me start by saying that I have done this literally hundreds of times so not sure what the problem is. I have watched and looked at websites with no luck, shows exactly the same thing that I have always done.  The top field is labeled @11660997 and @3038967 and the path is /Links/[filename].psd or .ai.  The links folder is found within the same folder that my csv file is in.  Will not find ANY of the images. I do this catalog every other month and I have been doing them since 2021 with no issues with the last one from May.  Any ideas or help would be appreciated.  Not in a super rush for an answer but within the week would be great.   Thanks, Cesar     <Title renamed by moderator>

I have a long pdf with many sections. Is it possible to automatically export all of the sections (with the section name as the document name) as seperate pdfs?Or do I just manually have to export by page range for each pdf?

Does anyone know if there's an easy way to convert a row of information in an InDesign table to a column? I need to re-orient a table. Thanks,Lloyd

After updating InDesign to version 19.5.0.84 on iMac running OS Sonoma 14.5, the toolbar no longer works. E.g. you can select an option e.g. Rectangle frame tool but cannot add a rectangle to the page. You have to copy and paste an object from a previous InDesign document. And all objects - rectangles, ovals, text automatically constrain proportions proportions, without the constrain icon being selected. I have:– tried advanced, essential and other modes (problem persists)– reset preferences using keyboard shortcuts, as well as InDesign's Preferences > General > Reset Preferences on Quit– deleted and reinstalled InDesign– reset preferences again The issue with any tool that is selected from the toolbar not drawing on, or adding content to a page - Type tool, Pen tool, Rectangle frame tool… and all other tools still persists. I have ample Ram on the iMac, and when testing the same document  on a different Mac running an older version of InDesign, it is OK, so I

I’m using a nested characer style to format the figure number at the start of a caption in which I use a GREP style to format the other numerals. The body is in italic and I need the figure number to be roman. The GREP style overrides the nested style, so the numerals that should be roman remain italic. It’s currently set up as [nested style] through 1 [end nested style character]. The balance of the paragraph is set in italic with a GREP style to letterspace the numerals. Obviously, I want this to format automatically, without having to fix the numerals after the fact in each instance. How do I prevent this sort of override?

In the following screenshot, all of the text flows in, auto-formatted by paragraph styles.It is essential to use forced line breaks for the entire restaurant's "listing"Is there anyway to get overhanging text to properly align, without placing an additional line break?  I tried placing Indent To Here markers before "Street Address"- but because its all one paragraph, it tiers the third location further.Backstory: This is for a large directory in which xml is imported, and everything is auto formatted. I'm trying to minimize manual adjustments once it flows in. I do have full control of the xml and can change tabs/markers where needed.Thanks in advance!

A client has supplied an Indesign file that displays unusual behaviour with the arrow tools when resizing image boxes. The outline arrow usually allows me to resize an image box independently of the image but at the moment the image auto resizes to fill the box. How do I switch this off please? No combination of keys seem to change this behaviour.

I have a layout that a client supplied to me that uses a leader of a period followed by a space. This all works great on the sample they sent me but some of the text requires a second line so I need to use a tab after the soft return which also has the same leader which I do not want. Is there a way to make the period invisible after the soft return and up to the first letter or digit using GREP?

Hello!Could anyone help me with creating a script?I've tried everything, but I always had mistakes or it didn't go the way I expected.I have an indesign file with many links to other indesign files. These links are "shuffled" into my larger file, and are activity pages. On each of these links (activity pages), there is a text box applied with the "activity" paragraph style that acts as an identifier.I need a script that in my "shuffle file", it goes through all the pages in that file and opens the links that are inserted on each page and tells me the text that exists there and has the paragraph style applied. My goal is to identify what activity is included on each page of my jumbled file.At the end, generate a txt containing the information: Scrambled file page: XX + Text copied from link file page.

In Indesign my Table of Contents has the correct Capitals and Small Letters. But when I save it as a PDF the bookmarks/TOC outline randomly forces some words to have all or some capitals. Why is it not the same as in Indesign? Also, when I edit the affected words in Adobe Acrobat, the changes do not stay (the random Capitals persist) -- how to correct this?

Hi, 1) I've been shown an ebook where the chapters drop ie have a space above the heading. I've never managed to do this. Does anyone know how to do it? Mine just float to the top. 2) Same person has told me that the chapters in my ebook do not start on separate pages in Adobe Digital Editions but the above ebook does. Is there something else ADE needs to do this? The above ebook does apparently. Kindle Previewer and Apple Books are fine. Thanks.

Hola comunidad tengo un problema quiero hacer un PDF interactivo y al rato de exportar me sale un mensaje que dice "archivo incluye contenido multimedia que es posible que no tenga controles de reproducción en el PDF interactivo", y no me deja exportar mi archivo que contiene vídeos formato mp4. Por favor si alguien me puede ayudar a solucionar este problema. muchas gracias

Since the last update (InDesign 2024 up to date) I have noticed that on certain typefaces the variable font icon appears. Then when I either key in text, or cut and paste text into the text frame, the spacing changes below certain point sizes. I only notice this because it makes the typafce look odd. I then noticed where the font weight should be displayed, the word custom is present. If I then go in and select the font I want ( bold, italic, regluar...) the spacing (kerning) between characters changes back to normal and the weight alters to how the font should be. Why is this auto kerning/bolding happening? I really don't want it, so is there a way of turning it off? If you look at the images you will see the difference between how the font displays. It really is a discernable difference, enough to look like I have slected a different font. Can anyone shed any light?Many thanks

I have a txt box with the correct styles desired. I copy and paste in txt from Word by placing my cursor somewhere in between some of the styled txt in INDD, in hopes it'll now take on those styles. That's not the case. Can you advise how when pasting in, it can take on those properties? Thank you.

I've just downloaded Plugins SDK 19.3.0.58. I'm running XCode 15.3 on Sonoma 14.4.1. Open the SDKSamples workspace.2. Build fails at line 73 integral_wrapper.hpp error integer value -1 is outside the valid range of values [0, 3] for this enumeration type So, seemingly this is a Boost version issue. If I download the current Boost 1.84.0_1, I can use it with no problem in a new XCode C++ project. But, since Boost (1_74) is distributed *with* the sdk, we assume it's a strict dependency? Any suggestions how I can resolve to get a functioning plugin development tooling set up? TIA,Jim
