After Effects 23.6 can't continue: internal structure inconsistency (g) ( 25 :: 2 ) macOS Sonoma

After Effects froze my whole computer tonight. I did a force restart and when I came back up, I was greeted with these 3 errors (see attached screenshots) and After Effects refused to open. Errors:

  1. After Effects can't continue: internal structure inconsistency (g) ( 25 :: 2 )
  2. After Effects error: globals unborn. ( 21 :: 3 )
  3. After Effects can't continue: unexpected failure during application startup

I uninstalled AE then reinstalled it. Errors persisted. I used CC cleaner. Errors persisted. I can't get back into normal AE 23.6. Please help!!!! Mac OS Sonoma 14.0, 64gb ram.

update 10/15/23 this is the 3rd time in a 1-2 week span that AE has crashed on me and now i cant get back in again becaus of global unborns. I cleared the contents of the preferences folder and the media core folder. Then tried to open AE. The 3 errors persisted and AE wouldn't open. So I went to adobe live chat. the minute they remoted in, I could open AE again. But the minute I ended the live remote, I couldnt get into AE and the 3 errors persisted again. It defied logic.  Another operator remoted in and uninstalled creative cloud and reinstalled and the 3 errors still persisted (media core folder was empty). He couldnt figure it out and asked if a senior tech could call me back tomorrow. I said no, please we need to fix this tonight. He ended up going to the application on the desktop, right click on AE, "show package contents", go into Contents -> MacOs -> and within that folder is a 106kb file called "after Effects" and he opened it with terminal and then AE opened.

Title edited by Mod.

why did the mod change the title of my post? this has nothing to do with cant continue? this has to do with AE crashing and not reopening.  Anyway: folks dont freak out, go to adobe live chat (https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html) and ask them to remote in and fix it for you. you'll see them go to activity monitor in apple and force quit out of all the adobe activity. then they'll probably uninstall , and remove your preferences and remove your plugins from media core.

The cause of the issue appears to be Sonoma adjusting the permissions and access to folders that After Effects requires to run. These include:

  • /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/MediaCore
  • /Users/[Username]/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/[Version]

To check for the appropriate permissions:

  1. Navigate to /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/
    • Right-click on the MediaCore folder and choose Get Info from the context menu.
    • Open the Sharing & Permission

Hi all,

We're investigating the issue. Meanwhile, please try the following solutions that worked for other users.

  1. Try resetting the preferences of After Effects. Here's how.
  2. If that doesn't work, try removing third-party plug-ins. Steps below-
  • Go to the location: HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plugins/7.0/MediaCore
  • Remove (or move to a different location to keep a backup) all the files and folders except dummy.txt and try to launch After Effects.

Let us know which solution worked for you.

Thanks,

Nishu

Hello,

We are seeing some internal signal in our crash logs associated with macOS Sonoma. Could you check to see if in Privacy & Security settings, under File Access that AE has access to disk?

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Privacy & Security in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click Files and Folders.
  3. For AE, turn on the ability to access files.

It seems some of the crashes we are seeing might be due to a permission change with the os update.

Please let us know if you find that the permissions were off and if this helps resolve the issue for you.

All the bet,
Jessica

Hi @nishu_kush thanks so much for the update!

If it helps at all, I noticed that for me the issue happens after opening files that have missing footage items, especially if those footage items are stored in a cloud drive (iCloud, Box, Resilio Sync, etc) where they may present, but not previously downloaded (i.e. "available offline"). AE freezes, and after force-quitting the error pops up on re-launch.

The work-around that I've found is to drag the problematic AE file into an already-open AE project instead of opening them directly from the finder. AE simply warns me about missing footage instead of trying to read the cloud-based file and crashing.

I'm having the same problem, I store most of my files on iCloud or a Hard drive, which shouldn't be an issue. At first, I tried opening AE with a file I had before updating to Sonoma, it would take forever to load and then crashed. I did a "force quit" and now AE won't open at all. PLEASE SOLVE THIS ISSUE!! I'm paying my membership and can't use the product 😞

The cause of the issue appears to be Sonoma adjusting the permissions and access to folders that After Effects requires to run. These include:

  • /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/MediaCore
  • /Users/[Username]/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/[Version]

To check for the appropriate permissions:

  1. Navigate to /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/
    • Right-click on the MediaCore folder and choose Get Info from the context menu.
    • Open the Sharing & Permissions section and make sure “everyone” has at least Read Only Privilege set.
    • If the account you are launching After Effects with is listed in the Name column, make sure it has at least the Read Privilege set as well.

  1. Navigate to /Users/[Username]/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/
    • Right-click on the appropriate [Version] folder and choose Get Info from the context menu.
    • Ensure Locked is not checked. Uncheck it if necessary.
    • Open the Sharing & Permissions section and ensure the account you using to launch After Effects has both the Read & Write Privilege.

If after completing these steps, After Effects will still not load, please make a backup of the above folders, then delete the folders at the paths above. Then uninstall and re-install After Effects.

We'll need a log file then to help further.

Navigate to

  • /Users/[Username]/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/[Version]/logs
  • Create an empty text file called "After Effects Log.txt" and save it in that folder
  • Now startup After Effects and let it go through all the errors until it quits/crashes

Find the log file you created above and paste the contents of it back into this thread.

@brianneelizabeth Thanks for the log file. The point of failure is around access to your preferences folder (/Users/[Username]/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/[Version]) - please follow the steps in the pinned post, including the final ones to backup/delete the existing preferences folder and then run AE.

p.s. just make sure you keep those keys held down until you see the after effects safe mode panel. Don't navigate away or anything else until you see it.

I may have figured something out. I followed the path provided by one of the users in here: /Users/username/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/
All of the permissions were okay, but AE kept giving me those error messages. In the folder there were versions dating back to version 18 (see image below)Screenshot 2023-10-13 at 8.10.06 AM.png I simply deleted all of them except 24 and Vualla, AE is back up and running. Good luck.

Can you video record the entire process from start to finish of starting up AE so we can make sure we can see the entire experience?

Can you also start up AE by going into the Applications folder, open the Adobe After Effects 2024 folder, right-click on the Adobe After Effects 2024 application and selecting Show Package Contents, go into Contents, go into MacOS, and then double-clicking "After Effects". That should produce a Terminal window with log messages. If you can copy that information and post it back here, that'll also help us.

There's nothing to record right now. Adobe already remoted in and fixed it. so if i recorded myself opening AE you wouldnt be able to see the problem. all you would see is AE opening normally. I would have to wait for it crash again to possibly record it. If I can remember to do so.........
