After Effects Freezes after some time with error: "Direct2D Drawbot Error. HRESULT:-2005270523"

Community Beginner ,
Jun 17, 2024 Jun 17, 2024

I can't say for sure, but after two or three more recent versions of AE Beta I started to get a random error, after working for a few minutes the whole computer crashes and then this Direct2D Drawbot Error box. HRESULT:-2005270523 appears, but I can't close it, it keeps reopening endlessly and then I have to force close the program.

I've been using AE Beta since they redid the interface, it's just become another program! It's very fluid and enjoyable. I'm not using to use the retail version because he not received the interface update., but I can say that the problem is in the beta, because when i use the reail version there is no issue i don't have any errors or freezes.

Here's a picture of the error I get when I close.

Update in the Beta:
The new behavior will show an error stating that AE cannot continue, followed by a second dialog prompting to save the open project, a save dialog, and then the application will shutdown automatically. AE will no longer loop error messages in this scenario.

Workarounds:

  1. @WellsMcKenzie Run AE in Windows 8 compatibility mode This might be due to the disablement of DirectX 12 in Windows 8. Thanks WellsMcKenzie for posting that!
  2.  @Maxxxymiron found disabling GPU acceleration in wi

Look its CLEARLY not limited to exotic GPUs (RTX 2080 here) or the driver (yes the latest driver). It's been like this for months. The software is quite literally unusable.

I've joined the party.

Got the same error message.

All screens go black, come back on, I control-alt-delete and end task on After Effects and whole system frozen. Had to hit the power button.
This is recurring constantly.
Not sustainable for a University Lecturer.

Hello,

As an update, we are actively investigating solutions, but understand that for those affected that they need an option today. If you are experiencing this issue, we recommend trying previous releases of AE, first going to version 25.0.1, and if the issue still persists, going to 24.6.4.

For instructions on installing previous versions see: Install previous versions of your Creative Cloud apps
I have included a partial image of what the version list looks like today for AE.

JessicaMcMillan_0-1734650829951.png

Hopefully this helps bring some relief from the situation as we investigate. Thank you for reporting this issue and including information about your systems and how you encountered this error.

If you go the route of using a version other than 25.1 and continue to experience this issue, it would still be valuable to let us know your AE version and system details in helping us investigate additional potential causes beyond what we currently are investigating.

We will continue to update this thread as we investigate further.

All the best,
Jessica McMillan - AE Engineering

Something working for me is that I was able to File > save a copy as 24.x and have it working ok with previous lts version 24.
Some may not be as lucky if they were using some exclusively v.25 features, but this has got me unstuck for the time being. Hopefully this helps others. Thanks for the update.

Switched to the 2024 version and it's still happening, just without the Error code. The machine just freezes and then restarts, in the same cases as before (Usually has to do with switching focus from AE to my browser or explorer).

I am literally unable to do huge parts of my job (The one I need to keep doing to put food on the table and in my son's belly) and I'm still paying. This is outrageous. Fix it or start compensating us.

I have now encountered the same error a couple of times with Premiere Pro as well. After Effects is crashing my PC close to 20 times a day depending on how much I need it that particular day. Usually works for about 5-15 minutes before it crashes again. Almost always when switching focus to a different program. I have downgraded to version 24, reset preferences and deleted plugins. I now absolutely hate my job. Thanks Adobe!

Welcome to the party! Seems going back to an older version does trick.
Guess who is going to skip “new versions” in future!!

Ah joined the party as well. PC with Intel i7 12th gen, RTX 2070 Super. This happened recently, I guess due to recent AE updates.

Interestingly, my partners who are using other computer (an old PC with i7 4770k GTX 1060, and a laptop Ryzen 9 RTX 3050) do not have this issue while running AE.

"In my case, and just in case it helps someone at Adobe trying to solve this issue, the problem mostly occurs when I try to maximize the window of anything external to After Effects, whether it's a browser, a file explorer window, or any other software that is not After Effects. This issue also occurred for me in the previous version of After Effects, and I can't recall exactly when I started experiencing it, but it's been happening for quite a while now.

My system specs are as follows:

  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11 Home, Version 10.0.26100
  • Driver: Studio Driver 566.36 (December 10, 2024)
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core Processor
  • RAM: 64 GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060"

Hi,

I'd like to provide some further information. It feels like the issue is connected with the issue I raised about 2 years ago. The crash almost always (however not always) happens as soon as I switch focus to another app. Here is my old bug report from 2 years ago which unfortunately hasn't been resolved. I've been experiencing this issue ever since - just that it is maybe more pronounced now (however, I'm not certain about that) and that there's now the Drawbot error message.

This behavior seems to be similar to what @syverl7606760 in this thread is describing: "Almost always when switching focus to a different program."

Similar to what syverl7606760 says, it also happened to me a few times in Premiere (at least, I think so).

Let me know if you need more info.

This is exactly my problem, since the beta test of the 2025 version. When I click on another program, it freezes and I have this error too.

Go back to 2024 and it's OK. It happens on 2 of my 3 machines.

Same problem. It started with version 2024 and continues now. In some versions less often, in some more often. When switching between AE and windows, with random probability the black screen and the whole computer hangs for several minutes. The error appears only on version 2025, it did not occur on older version. The video driver was crashing at the same time. For example, after the error the video in telegram was not playing.

Correcting the state of this ticket.

This is being actively investigated. We know that our dialog is being shown due to a TDR.

For those curious of what that is, here is a document from Microsoft: WDDM Support for Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) - Windows drivers | Microsoft Learn. Though this article is directed towards developers of drivers for displays/graphics cards.

The OS attempts some recovery steps which then are problematic for the application. Currently that results in the looping of this error dialog.

Thank you for providing the additional details for actions taken when this occurs: setup (duel monitors), GPU version and driver versions. This is important for us to have conversations with our partners to investigate root cause beyond the symptoms.

We will continue to update this thread as work continues.

All the best,

Hello! I have brought the solution to the problem for everyone! Let me tell you, I faced the same issue as you, where the screen would go black and in worse cases, it would restart the PC. I'm currently on a 7-day free trial, haha, so if this works for you (which I know it will), leave a like on the comment—maybe the developers of "Ae" will consider rewarding me with a license, haha. Here’s what I did to solve this problem:

#1 I downloaded these DirectX exe files and installed both (I am aware that Windows already comes with these libraries, but to be safe, it was better to reinstall in case something was missing).

Link : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35     directx.png

#2 Then I installed all the old versions of ".NET Framework" that were compatible with my system (version 2016 and later). I did not install versions like (Net.8) as the system had already installed them when updating Windows.

Link : https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet-framework

{9DF90024-CBD1-43FF-9B58-301300A923C5}.png

As a final step, I reinstalled the drivers for my GPU using the "Nvidia App" software. I chose the "custom installation" option and selected the "clean installation" option as shown in the image. This would ensure a clean installation to eliminate any driver issues (I use Nvidia Driver Studio). Make sure to disable Windows automatic updates before doing this, to prevent it from installing drivers and to ensure a proper installation using "Nvidia App."

When you start the installation, it will first ask you to restart your PC. When you turn it back on, you will see that the screen is at a very low resolution. Do not change it. Just open the "Nvidia App" again and proceed with the installation.

{BCF8F4C8-3F94-4FEB-B05F-CC704DFD8C76}.png

I also recommend running the "CMD" as an administrator and repairing the Windows image to avoid other conflicts with corrupt Windows files! Command: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image

I did all of this myself! It took me a lot of time to think of these solutions and draw conclusions! ... ChatGPT also helped me a lot, guiding me and providing opinions and conclusions 😉 My GPU is a GTX 1660, i5 9th, 24GB RAM.

Do this and I assure you the issue will be resolved!! Leave a like on the comment to see if the developers consider rewarding me 🙂 since my trial will end in 3 days, lol
