I do want to make sure that you understand that because of how tools are now associated with the workspace, they now appear and disappear with the workspaces. If you were still in the 3D workspace, then holding your mouse button down over the Eyedropper would completely ignore you and the menu wouldn't fly out. You had to switch back to Window > Workspace > Essentials (and potentially Reset Essentials) for the other tools in the flyout to reappear. If you find yourself in this situation again where you feel like you followed these instructions and it still wasn't working, you can also just reset Preferences rather than reinstalling. ... Yes... they are the 3D versions of the Eyedropper and Paint Bucket. Now that you are back to the Essentials workspace, press and hold on each tool, and pick the normal ones from each flyout. In Format > Page Layout > Column Layout, when you specify the number of columns, FrameMaker divides the template frame into equal columns. That can't be changed. To get the look you are after: View > Master pages Select the left template frame with the Object Selection tool Use Graphics > Object Properties to set the width to 18 pc Alt drag the frame to the right: make sure the template frame is set to Flow A (or your primary flow tag) This message confirms that the duplicate frame is connected to the first one. Click OK. Set up the width (16 pc) and position (same top offset) with Graphics > Object Properties. Still using the Object Selection tool, select the template frame on the right page and delete it. That means one of the body pages has a override: different margins or column settings from the master in charge of it. If you want consistency across the document, choose remove overrides. There isn't anyplace that I know of to see exactly what the override is: FrameMaker doesn't offer that in any scenario. My rule is no overrides, so it's a no-brainer: if I get the message in any scenario, I made a mistake and I remove it. In your case, save the file first, go to the master, and back to the body pages and remove the override. Then examine each page to see if anything untoward shows up. If it does, File > Revert. As a career trainer (with close to 25 on FrameMaker), I feel compelled to mention that "bypassing the Fm learning curve" may turn around to bite you, unless you have terrific support within the office. The people who tell me they "hate FrameMaker" are inevitably the ones who thought they could just figure it out, and failed. Or those who try to make it work like Word, and don't take advantage of Fm's powerful formatting controls. Yes, Style Mapping is a feature of FM 2015. The style names don't need to match: you can match them up during the import process. Save the Word doc as a .doc file. File > Import File The Word Import dialog box comes up automatically: Be sure to enable Import Word doc inline styles and list format, or Fm will remove all inline bold, italics, etc that isn't using a style. ~~~~~~~~~~ In older versions, I would have used your suggestion: create styles in Word whose style names correspond exactly to those in the existing FM file and then used File > Import > Formats to update the definitions. ... Hmmm. I'm wondering why you want to create the HTML page in FrameMaker, when you still have to use an HTML editor to set up the fields (and likely to refine the layout). FrameMaker doesn't have the ability to set up working forms fields for PDF (without a plug-in )or for HTML. In the case of a PDF, InDesign has interactive forms build right in. You can set up the forms fields, and when you save to a PDF, they just work. In FrameMaker you can set up the underlying forms structure (lines, boxes) but you will have to add the forms fields in Acrobat. ... View more

The Quick Selection tool makes selections based on tone and color. If the tones/colors are too close, it's going to leap beyond where you want it to go. Start by lowering the Tolerance value in the Options bar (up top): a lower value is less tolerant of a tone or color change, and keep the cursor completely inside the area you want to select—don't let the edge of the circle move outside, at all.
