How to Save an InDesign File for Older Versions (IDML) Did you know? InDesign files aren't backward compatible by default - a .indd file saved in InDesign 2024 simply won't open in InDesign CC 2019. But there's a simple workaround: export as IDML. What is IDML?IDML (InDesign Markup Language) is an open, XML-based file format that acts as a universal bridge between InDesign versions. Any version of InDesign from CS4 onwards can open an IDML file - making it the go-to format when collaborating with colleagues or clients on older software. But backward compatibility is only half the story. IDML is also one of the most reliable ways to recover a corrupted InDesign file. Because IDML is XML-based rather than binary, exporting a damaged .indd to IDML and then reopening it often strips out the corruption that's causing crashes, freezes, or "cannot be opened" errors - even when other recovery methods fail. Many InDesign users keep this trick in their back pocket specifically for emergencies, no

InDesign AI Assistant just launched in public beta and we are excited for you to try it. What is AI Assistant in InDesign? It's your conversational partner built directly within InDesign. It can help you build skills and create production-ready InDesign documents faster. Instead of digging through tutorials, simply ask the AI Assistant "How do I create a table of contents?" and learn as you go. Or save time by having it set up your layout and apply bulk text/image/style edits with a single prompt. Why it mattersDesigners spend a huge amount of time on repetitive tasks and navigating menus, and when you get stuck, context-switching to YouTube or Help pages breaks your flow. AI Assistant changes that: Speed up your workflow: Automate multi-step workflows with natural language prompts. Guidance on demand: Get instant, in-context answers without leaving the app. Stay in your creative flow: Fewer interruptions, more designing. How to try itOpen the Creative Cloud desktop app and go to A

What’s up with InDesign? Trying to edit a simple 1 page file with three grouped boxes (text, photo, background), I can’t do anything. Click on a box to place a graphic, cursor spins for 20 minutes.. but will let me continue clicking elsewhere. Somehow the box was grabbed and moved - I can’t grab it to move it back (cursor is still spinning), there’s no undo button. I’m losing it. What is up with InDesign?! (I’m on Windows 11.) I’ve restarted, there are no updates, this is making me nuts. InDesign is using 2 GB of memoryEDIT: Deleted the font cache, seemed to be in a death loop that was consuming all resources
Hi all. I am trying to export a PNG file that is only one line of text with an outer shadow effect. No other layers or elements. Just the text with an effect. When I first created the file I tried a drop shadow. But when I exported it, I realized it didn’t look good and I continued working on it. However now every export looks like the version with the drop shadow despite all the changes I’ve made in the software. This has never happened before. The design exports fine as any other file type (PDF looks fine). But it has to be PNG because I need a transparent background. When I add additional lines of text they show up in the PNG, but the drop shadow never goes away.I’ve restarted my computer (MAC), uninstalled InDesign, reset preferences, I’ve even recreated the entire design from scratch using a new file name and the same image shows up whenever I export a PNG. I am losing my mind, please help.
Since updating to 21.4 there’s a strange shape over the left upper corner of the screen, rendering the X-value of the transformation panel more or less inoperable.MacMini M1, Mac OS 26.5.2
It started back in March and has persisted ever since. I have the latest, updated version of InDesign and Windows 11. I did not make any changes prior to the issue, and I have a newer desktop computer. I have been working with InDesign since it was the Pagemaker program, so knowledge is not an issue here. And, I have never had this problem in my 33 years of using Adobe programs. That being said, here is the issue:Randomly, when I edit an existing paragraph or character style, it can take 30 seconds to over a minute to be able to make that change. It happens when I choose a different setting, and also when I hit okay. If I close ID and restart, it helps a bit, but not completely, and the issue continues to worsen as I make style changes.I have deactivated all fonts, and that did not help.I have installed and reinstalled ID, and that did not help.I have rebooted SO MANY timesI have tried to delete my font cache, but I get a message that it is in use even after
I create a 42 page pdf and images are missing. The error is “Version 4 ICC profiles were converted to Version 2 ICC profiles during pdf export. Error encountered while ready tiff image.” The indesign file is a file linked with other indesign files. No error occurs when creating pdfs individually from each of the indesign files, so images are not damaged. Is it a indesign glitch or a acrobat glitch. We have been creating pdfs this way for years and it recently became a issue. Is it a indesign glitch or a acrobat glitch.
In the latest update of InDesign when I have multiple shapes and frames on the page selected, if my cursor is above something like a rectangle with content/picture inside it, I only move the picture that is below it at the time. Rather than the whole selection of objects as it used to. I tested before and after the update and it was something that only broke with 21.4. If I cursor over a solid shape object while still selecting the entire group (including the photo frame) that then moves the entire section but only if cursor above a placed fill object does it break. What could possibly be happening?
Mac, OS Tahoe 26.3.1 (a)In the past I have had this problem with Illustrator and Photoshop. Now it sometimes appears with InDesign as well. If I try to drag the active window to another place on my screen, by dragging from the top of the window, it disappears behind all other apps currently open. Oddly, any free floating palettes stay on top. If I can still see a part of the window, I can click on it to bring it back to the front. If not, I have to go to the dock to bring it forward. Nothing is lost so this is an annoyance rather than a real problem, but why does it happen and why is it now happening with ID as well as the others?
Normally, I would hover over the green button and select a side-by-side view, but the green button is not reacting. When I hover over the green button in the InDesign document, no pop-up window appears. The Mac OS calculator tool does not have a green button. I need to use the calculator next to the InDesign document.
The past few days when trying to drag and drop text I am getting a pop up that says “in CanAcceptURL.” the only way to get rid of it is to hit the escape key, although twice now I had to force quit InDesign when it appeared. I am on a Windows 11 PC and updated my apps last week. Has anyone else had this problem, I have been using the program since version 2.0 and have never had this happen and do not know what that message means.
This is an odd one, I double click on an indesign file, indesign and the file opens up but indesign goes to the background on my Mac, and the finder to the foreground then the Mac doc appears and stays there, I have to then click on the indesign layout to bring it to the front, the doc still stays until I click on something else on the doc then it disappears. This started when an agency sent me a brochure to work on and now it is happening with every file I open. I have searched and not found anyone with the same problem. So far I have deleted the Indesign preferences and that didn't fix it, then updated to the latest indesign and that didn't work either. Both illustrator and photoshop are working great. I would be grateful for any advice. Thank you. My set up is: Mac Studio 2023, 64GB ram, Sequoia 15.7.1, Indesign 2026.
My InDesign hangs and shows a spinning cursor whenever I edit the formatting of a paragraph; it essentially freezes and just keeps spinning. I am using the latest version. This issue only started occurring after I updated to the new version.
PDF Comments panel corrupts Czech diacriticsInDesign 2026 on Windows 11 displays corrupted Czech characters in the Window → PDF Comments panel. The corruption affects:imported PDF comments, the search edit box while typing! The same INDD and PDF display correctly on other machines - but not all. Rest of UI has no problems.Verified:identical InDesign installation (hash comparison of files), identical PDF, different Acrobat versions tested, Czech and English UI tested, reinstallation of InDesign tested identical UI fonts (Segoe family)Therefore the issue appears to be specific to the PDF Comments panel text rendering/input subsystem rather than PDF parsing. This should be á č ď é ě í ň ó ř š ť ú ů ý ž, the same changes appears in comments
ID 21.4.1, MacI built a file in InDesign without issues. We just started experiencing an issue in which when someone else opens the file, the fonts (Barlow) appear to be missing, and show up like this: I was able to get the fonts working by disabling them, and letting ID re-enable them. However, when I opened a different copy of the same file, Medium and Medium appeared to be missing again, though I found I could also “fix” them by using Type > Find/Replace. I assume that if I open up a copy someone else was working on, I may experience the same issue.Any ideas what may cause this? It’s concerning, and we haven’t seen this before. Thanks
Hello, I have a multi-page AI file placed in my InDesign document. After making changes to the AI file, I save it. When I check the Links panel in InDesign, the yellow triangle alert appears. I ALT-click the update button, and InDesign updates all the links, but the changes I made in the AI file are not reflected in InDesign. This is a process I've done many times before without any issues. The same problem occurred with a different file yesterday. I've tried restarting my PC in case it was a glitch, but that didn't help. Do you have any idea why the link update function isn't working as it should? <Title renamed by MOD>
Aus InDesign soll ein barrierefreies PDF erstellt werden. Sollte das PDF Export Tag H1 im Dokument nur einmal (für den Titel) vergeben werden? Kapitelüberschriften beginnen mit H1?Also zum Beispiel:Titel - H1Kapitel A - H2, A 1 - H3, A 1.1. - H4Kapitel B - H2, B 1 - H3, B1.1 - H4 Ich habe mit Titel H und dann weiter H1 für die Kapitel gearbeitet. Das gefällt PAC nicht! :(
I would like to kindly follow up on support case ADB-44827608-R1Y7, which I opened earlier today. As I mentioned before, this issue is not restricted to AI-generated PNG files. The “missing link” error — showing a gray placeholder with green stripes— is also appearing on placed images in layouts I created four years ago that have never contained any artificial intelligence content. To illustrate this clearly, I am attaching the two screenshots once again:• Screenshot from InDesign 2026 showing the file “ReportajeSIP Abril 2026.indd” (page 2), where the placed image displays the gray/green missing-link placeholder.• Screenshot of the exact same section opened in Illustrator 2026, where the design renders perfectlywith no link errors at all.I have already carried out every troubleshooting step suggested by support:Full Creative Cloud repair Complete preferences reset (Cmd + Option + Shift at launch) Clean reinstallation of the application Manually re-linking all placed images Installation
I can't find the line spacing control to change from single spacing to double. Can someone tell me where it is? ***** Title renamed by Moderator "VS" *****
I’m working on making my PDF exports more robust and accessible, and therefore including Articles. In a recent project, I fumbled through InDesign’s Articles panel (not a great experience) and managed to see the <Art> tags appropriately names and exported across into the resulting PDF. But in Acrobat, there’s also an Articles panel that shows nothing. What gives? Is there a separate, different thing in Acrobat for articles outside of Accessibility Tags? Or did I miss something to have InDesign automatically build these, too? Any insight is helpful. Images below show the successfully-populated Tags, but an empty Articles area.Tags in Acrobat, showing successful list of <art> from InDesign-made Articles. Empty Articles panel in Acrobat. What’s supposed to be here and how do I build it properly?
