A realistic shadow helps your subject feel grounded in the scene. In Photoshop, there are several ways to create one, depending on your subject and lighting. Based on workflows shared by experts in the Photoshop community, we've brought together a few of the most effective techniques here. Choose the method that best fits your workflow. Method 1: Using Generative AIAI can speed up the setup, but you will still get the best results by refining the shadow yourself.Use Select Subject or Remove Background to quickly isolate your object. Use Generative Fill to extend the surface where the shadow will fall. Learn more. You can also use Harmonize. It analyzes the lighting, color, and tone of the scene, and can also generate a matching shadow to help the subject feel more naturally integrated. Learn more. Refine the generated shadow manually using one of the methods above for the most realistic result. Method 2: Drop Shadow EffectThis is the quickest way to add depth and separation to elemen
Keeping your Layers panel organized just got a whole lot easier. Layer Cleanup in Photoshop 27.6 and above automatically deletes empty layers and renames layers based on their content, so you can focus on creating, not housekeeping. With a single action from the Layers panel, Photoshop scans your document and removes blank pixel or text layers that tend to pile up during exploration. At the same time, it can intelligently rename layers, giving them clear, descriptive names that reflect what’s inside, so you no longer have to guess what “Layer 37 copy 2” contains. You’re in control of how much cleanup happens. Run it across the entire document for a full reset, or apply it only to selected layers when you want to tidy up as you go. Here is a quick tutorial demonstrating this feature. Why this mattersFaster navigation in complex files Cleaner handoffs when sharing PSDs with teammates Less friction when revisiting older projects Better layer discipline without manual effortWhether you’r

A partial layer appears in my Photoshop image after modifying a smart object image in camera raw following the addition of a mask layer. The new partial layer appears when I return from camera raw to Photoshop. This problem just started a few days ago. I have tried numerous techniques like double clicking on the camera raw icon, but the problem persists. Your solution to this problem is greatly appreciated.
I have an Apple 27 inch Intel iMac running Mac OS 13.7.8 which is the latest version that will run on it. I was using photoshop version 27.8 and for the most part it worked fine. There were a few new features that required a newer operating system but for they were things I needed. Yesterday, it upgraded to version 27.9 and now when I launch it I receive a message that I need to upgrade the operating system to use it. I would have expected that the update would only have installed if it would run on my machine, which is what happened with Lightroom I tried to uninstall photoshop and reinstall both 27.8 and 27.7 and now I still get the message that I need to upgrade my operating system to use it. upgrading my OS isn’t an option until I can buy new hardware and that isn’t going to happen until Apple announces a new mini. is there anyway to get photoshop working again?thatks for your help,Jim
I have been editing flowers for over a month with absolutely no problem and all of a sudden I am getting shadowing appearing when painting back in on a mask layer. The only way to avoid is to leave a large gap around the edges which is totally useless and before I could paint right up to the edges of leaves.my process is1 open photo2 overlay a texture background (using pace embedded as Jo other way currently works with my version3 Add a mask layer4 set opacity of overlay to around 40%select mask layer and paint over parts of flower I want to see - before I could go right up to edge of leaves with no problem5 select texture layer and adjust opacity until desired effectworked perfect until today and now if I go anywhere near the edges of the flower, a shadow appears outside the edge and on the background texture :(any tips on what I might have accidentally switched on would be gratefully receivedthanks in advance
Hello Adobe team,I am reporting an issue with Photoshop 27.7 on Windows 11 where the new Remove Tool on-device generative AI model cannot be enabled on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080.The “Device” option remains greyed out, even though all documented requirements appear to be met.SYSTEM SUMMARYPhotoshop version: Adobe Photoshop 2026 / 27.7Operating system: Windows 11GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080VRAM: approximately 16 GBDirectX: DirectX 12 / DirectX 12.2 availableNVIDIA driver: current and newer than Adobe’s stated minimum requirementPhotoshop GPU acceleration: enabledPhotoshop GPU status: GPU is detected and allowedAvailable disk space: sufficientThe GPU is usable for normal Photoshop GPU acceleration. The important detail is that Photoshop appears to detect and use the RTX 5080 for general GPU acceleration, but in the system information / GPU identification path the card is shown as:NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 UNKNOWNThis strongly suggests that the issue is not general GPU acceleration, but the
Thanks to all who took part in our previous ‘Where there’s smoke’ challenge. There were some great images based on the Victorian pipe. This week, we go to Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island. It is situated just off the Northumberland coast of England, and reachable by a causeway. This view of the castle, which was built in the 16th century, is from the rugged rocks of the beach. In its day, it must have been a formidable castle to breach. Of course, with the power of image manipulation, you can show us how it might be done. The “rules”:Use the starter image as at least part of your own image entry. Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright, etc. Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum “regulars”. The challenge is not limited to Photoshop. Any Adobe software can be used. There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off your skills, or bring a
I am trying to user Adobe Photoshop API to create PSD with groups, i.e. https://developer.adobe.com/firefly-services/docs/photoshop/api/photoshop-v2/, to create a PSD file programmatically. I tried to create a simple PSD with groups of layers. But even though I think I followed the API schema, I still get “An unknown error occurred” error response. For example a payload like below trying to create a PSD with one group that has 2 image layers in it. { "image": { "source": { "url": "<GET_BACKGROUND>" } }, "edits": { "layers": [ { "name": "group1", "type": "group_layer", "operation": { "type": "add", "placement": { "type": "top" } }, "children": [ { "name": "source", "type": "layer", "operation": { "type": "add", "placement": { "type": "top" } }, "image": { "source": { "url": "<Image1>" } } }, { "name": "add", "type": "layer", "operation": { "type": "add", "placement": { "type": "top" } },
Hello,The title said it all.Steps to reproduce:1. make a document with Grayscale color mode (or convert it via Image>Mode>Grayscale)2. Add a Levels adjustment layer.3. record an action of you changing the sliders on the Levels adjustment layer.4. change those values first, then try playing the action.5. Result: it does nothing! (but such an action works on an RGB Document for example).Besides that, RGB documents, for instance, allow the creation of a Levels adjustment layer with given values in a single executeaction step. that doesn’t work on Grayscale documents.
Hello,Recently I have noticed that when I select a menu, or a drop down menu, there is a brief freeze and lag. This lag vanishes with Windows Ink is disabled, BUT, then I lose all pressure sensitivity. The lag isnt there when I roll over menus, but is when they are clicked.I am on Windows 11, using a Wacom Intuos Pro LRG (and older model: PTH-851)
For the past several versions of Photoshop, I’ve been experiencing a recurring problem when saving my files as PDFs. My files are specification sheets that are 8.5 x 11. Very standard. When I select Save a Copy > Photoshop PDF and save using either the High Quality Print or even Smallest File Size preset, Photoshop appears to save the PDF successfully. However, when I try to open the resulting PDF, I receive an error stating that the Page content might be truncated. All it shows is a blank white square. This has been happening consistently for the past few months and has become extremely frustrating. As a designer, PDF export is an essential part of my workflow. I regularly create PDFs for my company’s website, vendor websites, product documentation, and printing, so I need to be able to rely on Photoshop to generate valid PDF files.I’ve tried numerous troubleshooting suggestions I’ve found online and in responses to similar Adobe Community posts, including changing the PDF save setti

Make sure the setting “Use Legacy 'New Document' Interface” is disabled.2. Launch Photoshop.3. As soon as the main Photoshop window opens, but before the UI has finished initializing, immediately press Ctrl+N or click File->New. EXPECTED RESULTThe standard New Document dialog should open, not the legacy dialog. The "Use Legacy 'New Document' Interface" setting should remain disabled.ACTUAL RESULT- Both the legacy and current New Document dialogs open.- After closing the dialogs, Photoshop behaves as though "Use Legacy 'New Document' Interface" has been enabled.- This setting becomes checked and greyed out, so it cannot be changed.- All subsequent attempts to create a new document during that Photoshop session open only the legacy New Document dialog.- Restarting Photoshop restores normal behavior and the setting is once again disabled and edita
The editable gradient map is great i constantly need the Linear Gradient to be bent, a bit like the transform warp arc feature would be amazing! The ability to squash a radial gradient as well as bend it would also be incredibly useful This would ba especially useful remaking skies. The ability to add grain into this would be great too as dither still produces banding results in 8bit

The only drawing program that this happens on is photoshop, even programs not really made for drawing have a more smooth/responsive brush. When i opened up paint and just scribbled some lines in it i realized how smoother it is compared to photoshop, then i opened Clip Studio Paint and it was the same, it was way smoother than Photoshop, i can’t just ignore it at this point its too annoying and i don’t know if this problem only affects me or its a photoshop issueThings I Tried that did not fix it: Disable GSYNC Change Scratch disks Smoothing is not even on Rolling back to older versions(Present in CS6 I tried photoshop ME7 and it did not have this issue, but its too old) Small brush, big brush, small canvas, big canvas, none of it makes a difference The MS Paint cursor is not visible because of compression but the brush stroke was following it seamlessly
Operation was cancelled. Could not download "book.psdc" because of an unexpected error. Please try again. i am getting this error. in photoshop online but i want that file. its urgent.
