How to upload.mobi & .epub files to a website?

New Here ,
Nov 20, 2012 Nov 20, 2012

Hello,

I work with authors who are wanting to sell their e-books directly as an .epub or .mobi file so that it can be easily download onto e-readers.

Currently BC only support pdf as an automatic download unfortunately so we could possibly get around this by creating a download page.

Has anyone created a download page so that the .epub & .mobi files can be downloaded easily onto e-readers etc?

Thank you

Carolyn

Carolyn ,where did you read this about PDF?

If you have an e-product using eCommerce you can attach many types of files.

Hi Liam,

This is the question I put into BC Support yesterday

Hello Support,

Not sure where this fits in as an enquiry.

I work with authors who are self published and they offer for sale e-books. Now I am sure you are aware the platforms for e-books has changed quite rapidly in the past 18 months and more. But now with so many e readers out there, people are wanting to download a file that is compatible to their e reader, the same that they are able to download from the likes of Barnes & Noble, iDownloads, Amazon etc. I am now been asked by my authors that they want to offer a compatible file for download for these e-readers directly from their website. At present all we offer is a pdf which doesn't have the capabilities of an .epub file.

I couldn't find any answers in the knowledge base relating to these files.

My question is are we able to upload epub files for automatic download on BC? Will the system have any problems with a .epub file that you know of?

Look forward to your reply.

Thank you
Carolyn

This is the reply I got back from BC Support

Thank you for contacting us.

I have gone through the details.

This is unfortunately not possible , we can only use pdf format.

But I will try to pass on this information to product team as an enhancement request.

Also I would suggest you to post this in forums so that we can know for some workaround or if some of the partners have implemented this.

****

So I am just looking for some answers as to how to or can I upload .mobi & .epub files that will download directly onto folks e-readers. Has some body done it, I have read in some of the forums on the internet around these files and some say you have to add a bit of script that allows the file to download cleanly onto devices, I haven't found a definitive answer as yet.Hence the reason for asking this question.

Appreciate any help on this matter.

Thank you

Hi Carolyn,

I'd be interested if you've found a solution to this one.

I too have a client wanting to offer eBooks in their shop, at present they are using PDF format but in the future will be considering the EPUB format.

The additional problem is that these eBooks are "interactive" with embedded videos, so their file size is excess of the 100mb BC imposes on downloads.

Like yourself I've read around the forums and the web for potential solutions.

Ideas / possible solutions so far from my readings:

  1. Put files online with an alternative supplier, like Payloadz.
PROBLEM: transaction is done via 3rd party, not captured in BC.

  2. Upload files to a non-advertised folder on site, then add secure pages to a secure zone containing a link to the 'hidden files.
PROBLEM: The link the file is not secure, so if it gets out on the web; can link direct to file by-passing security

  3. API call after order placed, create a PHP script to send customer an email with link to secure file location.
PROBLEM: Not sure if this can be done as yet?

  4. Put files onto another secure server with a password on the folder containing files
Thinking if a resource like Google Drive, DropBox can do this?

  5. Password protect the PDF file itself.
PROBLEM: This would be tedious for customer after they've bought a legitmate copy, entering password each time

Kind regards

Mike

Hi Carolyn,

I too would be interested to know if you've found a solution.

I have a client wanting to offer ebooks and I would prefer to be able to offer them the option of .epub files as opposed to .pdf.

Any more info on this?...

Hi Luke,

Unfortunately I am not any further with this.

I know it can be done because I have seen websites offering .epub files but as yet to find out how they do it.

Even though I have asked them to share.

Let me know if you learn anything.

I'm selling my eBooks at one of my websites, which is hosted by WordPress. I use a free tool offered by the platform itself called WooCommerce. My problem is that whereas in one of my websites I can easily upload .epub files, I can't do the same to the other. I am trying to figure out why.

This forum is specifically for Adobe BC so you are better asking on the wordpress forums for help on that.
