Google shows my site as a https not http

Explorer ,
Jun 23, 2013 Jun 23, 2013

Hi guys

Google search is showing my site www.ceramicplanet.co.uk as a https site and not a http.

The problem with this is when you click on the google link a warning page tells you it might not be safe and don't proceed, this of course is terrible for the site.

1. Are my pages meant to be https because they aren't

2. Why has google searched my pages and decided its a https site?

3. What is the fix? Some how tell google it's a http site or change my pages to https?

Also I've noticed google search displays the https in the address of the search result of my page but other results for other site don't display the http bit just www.name.com. Is this all up to google or can I set up how the site displays in its search results.

I do have the site verified in web tools.  Both the www.ceramicplanet.co.uk and ceramicplanet.co.uk domains, is this necessary? Can I do anything within we tools to help the https situation?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Dave

Hi Dave,

You have linked like that in more then one place then on your site in error most likely.

Run a website report (lots of tools out there) to get all the links found on your site and look to see if you have linked any https instead of http. If you have fix them.

The google bot has likely come into your site, found links like this and there after stuck under https. It is probably considering this the stronger version of your url and ranking the results as such.

Another good idea besides removing https:// links from your site's actual markup is to signup for  http://google.com/webmasters if you haven't already.  Make sure you use the "http" version of your url when you signup.  You'll have to add some metadata to the homepage or upload a .txt file to verify you own the site for Google Webmasters.  Once you are signed up with Google webmasters, Google will use bits of the information from there when attempting to index your site.

Next, on the homepage I would add a "canonical url" meta tag using "http://" address of your base domain so that when google visits the https version it will see the canonical url meta tag and will start to adjust your google result accordingly.

Here's some info about canonical urls: http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394

These two things will probably help but you have to do it soon and remember-- your links will take a few days-- sometimes weeks to correct in Google.  It also wouldn't hurt to use Google Analytics as well... they use data from your Google Analytics in your search index listings as well.

just to update on the situation.

Since your advice Ive fixed a few issues with load time and broken links. added a new site map and google now lists my home page correctly!

I havent found any pages manually with a https only http.

also I signed up to google webmasters straight away when I went live and added the www.ceramcplanet.co.uk and the ceramicplanet.co.uk domain to my verified list.

So i dont know why google listed my site as a https but hopefully itll sort it out over time. also Ive noticed some of my pages are showing up as my test site name ceramic-planet2.businesscatalyst.com and these pages are http not https so again Im still none the wiser why google thought they were https.

thanks for the advise

Dave

This has happened to a site of ours in the last few days. All of a sudden google has reindexed the wrong protocol. (https instead of http)

we have submitted the correct sitemap, have canonical tag in place and everything checks out in Search Console and Google Analytics. Its like half the links, including the home page are indexed incorrectly and the rest and fine.

Has BC made any changes in the backend that could affect the search results?

since I discussed this issue my pages are read as http now by google so a mixture of time on googles part to index the pages correctly plus all the other things listed above helps the site being indexed correctly.
