Illustrator Paste In Place to Current Artboard

Explorer ,
Nov 08, 2021 Nov 08, 2021

In previous versions of Illustrator, once I selected a different artboard and hit Paste in Place it would paste it into an identical X/Y location of that artboard. Now, it pastes it back to the artboard from which it was originally copied. I don't know why the team would choose to reduce the software like this. If I wanted to paste in place on the original artboard, I would have just selected the original artboard. What are my workaround options? I mass produce various versions of the same artwork for marketing purposes and this is a huge step back for my workflow.

Met1,

the principle is pretty simple.

If you want to accurately copy and paste in place on different artboards:

- Select/activate an artboard
- Select the objects you are going to copy on that artboard and make sure that the artboard is still selected
- Copy the selection
- Select/activate a different artboard (target)
- Paste in Place (or Front)

This way worked and still works reliably in older and in the most recent versions of Illustrator.

I'm sure that you and any other Illustrator use

Just dropping my experimenting here. Similar to Met1, I also had trouble pasting in place despite deliberately selecting the new artboard. I was using Illustrator 2023. After upgrading to 2026, this stopped being a problem, despite that I used the same method to select the artboard.

I also tried doubleclicking to select the artboard like another user mentioned worked for them but that didn't help on the 2023 version. I suspect this was just buggy at the time this problem presented and has since been fixed.

Kurt is right, you need to select the part of the object that is inside the artboard and thereby select its artboard. Copy and click on another artboard and paste in place works.

I selected the artwork by clicking on a part that was outside the artboard and that means trouble.

Ton, that's the reason why I recently had to go to a boot camp to learn how to accurately select artboards in Illustrator.

Whenever I failed to select them I had to do 50 knee bends.

Still suffering from sore muscles.

Kurt, you certainly learned it the hard way.

Can you give a link to that boot camp so we can refer to it when needed?

No, Ton, I cannot provide a link.

Certainly there are more humane ways without any camp.
