Header Numbers Broken

New Here ,
Jan 06, 2026 Jan 06, 2026

I have an InDesign file that the pages are messed up on pages 50-142. The Headers and Subheaders aren't in order and I've tried several ways to fix it, but can't figure it out. The text thread jumps from page 49 to page 87 and I need the pages to be continous with the header and subheader numberings.

It  follows thr text threads. You have to include all into the thread in the correct order.

To clarify, your text threads need to be connected. Page 49 links all the way down to 87.

Numbering will pick up from un-threaded text frames, but ONLY after going through the current text thread.

You can either do a lot of cut-and-paste, or...

Fix your Heading styles by giving them a unique List style (stay away from the "default" list style).

Run the BreakTextThread script (Scripts panel>Community folder).

Fix your threads as needed. (You may be able to keep them unthreaded since the number list will work across threads.)

Ajar Productions has a free script (if you subscribe to their newsletter) called Merge TextFrames. I don't know if it will work with the current InDesign.
