Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help me with my issue of the preview window in Prem Pro stuttering and freezing constantly on playback of the timeline.
Here's my system spec:
2020 iMac
CPU: 3.8 GHz 8-Core Intel i7 (can't find the info for the exact generation)
GPU: AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16GB
RAM: 40GB 2133 MHz DDR4
1 TB SSD in iMac
MacOS: Tahoe 26.1
Running Premiere 25.6.2
Basically, whenever I go to preview the timeline and make any edits to my sequence the playback will 95% of the time start to stutter, become unresponsive and then freeze. I'm still able to save the project and use other features of Prem during this time, but it's a real issue when trying to edit anything. I've opened up Activity Monitor while the preview becomes unresponsive and my CPU load will barely reach over 10% even.
Also, when I move the playhead around on the timeline itself, it will take forever for the preview to reflect what the footage should be displaying. I'll sometimes have a small window when the playhead does reflect what the footage should be displaying at that given time and then I'll be able to playback the sequence for a very short time and cut between multicam angles in that time. That usually ends up with this issue after 10-30 secs of playback though.
I'm currently working on a project with 4 camera angles - using a nested multicam sequence - but I've also noticed this issue arise when editing clips on their own as well.
Here's what I've tried already:
- Rolling back Prem to version 25.5
- Copying all media across from the external HDD I was initially editing from to my iMac SSD (in case read/write speeds were really slow and couldn't keep up)
- Rendering 1/4 resolution ProRes proxies of all footage and attaching these to the source clips and enabling proxies in the timeline window.
- Updating MacOS from Sequoia to Tahoe 26.1
- Lowering the preview window quality to 1/4 or 1/8 quality
- Ensuring that "High Quality Playback" is deselected on the preview window options
My source footage for the project is a mixture of AVCHD (MTS) and MP4 files with a constant frame rate of 25/50 fps. I've preserved the AVCHD package and the hierarchy and imported one of the files fro the STREAM folder directly into Prem to maintain the metadata and other files associated with the AVCHD package. The MTS file that I'm using has also been rendered as a 1/4 res ProRes proxy and has been attached to the associated MTS file in the Prem project though, as have all the MP4 files I'm using.
If anyone could suggest anything, that would be appreciated. My workflow has slowed to near halt since this issue has occurred.
Thanks for your help with this.
Joe
