Ripple Edit Tool Change?

New Here ,
Dec 30, 2025 Dec 30, 2025

Has anyone else had a change to the way your Ripple edit tool works? It's happened to me across two different computers and Adobe accounts so I can only assume it is a platform wide change...

When I ripple edit the END of the clip to be shorter, it works normally as it used to: I click and hold at the end of the clip, drag to the left to shorten it, and the clip moves inwards as I shorten it. The edge of the clip I am shortening is staying directly underneath the cursor.

However when I do ripple edit on the front of a clip to make it shorter, the cursor now separates from the edge of the clip and moves further along to the right while the clip is shortening at the same pace but not underneath the cursor.

is this normal now or is there some way to change this back? I hope i explained that well enough 😅

I don't recall the behavior you're describing, and I wasn't able to replicate it even when testing older versions of Premiere Pro 24.x.

As an alternative, you might find it more effective to use the keyboard shortcuts Q and W for ripple trimming. These correspond to "Ripple Trim Previous Edit to Playhead" and "Ripple Trim Next Edit to Playhead," respectively. This method allows you to position the playhead exactly where you want the trim to occur, making it easier to maintain control and accuracy without relying on cursor position.

I've just tested this on 24.6.8 and then 25.6.3.

There is indeed a slight difference in behaviour between the two versions for Ripple Edit tool.

On 24.6.8 you can see the trailing edge of the selected clip moving as you drag it from right to left and leading edge left to right.

On 25.6.3 right to left works the same way but on right to left the leading edge of the clip is not following under the edge of the tool position as you drag it like it does in 24.6.8.

The leading edge of the clip is not identified as it is moved compared to the behaviour in 24.6.8.

You can however still use keyboard shortcuts Q & W to exact playhead position as Paul Murphy points out.

The new changes in 25.6.3 are not intuitive in my own opinion and seem to not be liked by quite a few users in a previous post :

I also noticed in Beta version it has changed again and the Ripple edit right to left no longer shows the trailing edge moving as it does in 24.x and 25.x

@Kevin-Monahan - Hi, has this actual design change been documented somewhere?. We may have missed it ?.

What was the feedback from the Dev Team when you flagged this ?
